View Full Version : Last Minute Holidays
steelblade 03-09-2003, 08:47 My boyfriend is going to take me away on a holiday abroad in September. I've been given the task of finding us a last minute holiday.
I just wondered if anyone had been on one before, if so where did you find it and what was it like?
We've never booked a last minute before and really don't want to end up in a resort full of 17 year old larger louts nor do we want somewhere full of zimmer frames. I am stuck as to where to look.
I've been to Greece and didn't really like it, plus I hate flying so I want to go somewhere that doesn't take more than 2 hours on the aeroplane. Two hours in a metal tube in the sky is more than enough for me! :D
Lindseyw 03-09-2003, 08:50 try lunnpoly.co.uk for maybe a spanish getaway ?
or lastminute.com
we booked last minute last year and ended up in a lovely place - nice and chilled with just a few restaurants and bars.

DaBouncer 03-09-2003, 09:59 Went on a last minute hol to Fuerteventura (Canaray Islands) last November through teletext holidays and loved it. Great value for £££ and would recommend the place to anyone!
steelblade 03-09-2003, 10:04 Did you know where you would be staying or was it allocation on arrival? I'm a little worried about not knowing where we would be staying as I like to check the places on holidays uncovered.
DaBouncer 03-09-2003, 10:07 On teletext it was named accomodation. Oasis Dunas Apartments in Corralejo Fuerteventura. Great place.
We came back from a Thomas Cook holiday to Halkidiki this June which was named on arrival. Again the apartments and resort were spot on. I wouldn't have problem going named on arrival anymore!
tinajones 04-09-2003, 10:43 try expedia.co.uk
i went to india for £240 and it included my accomm. i booked it 48 hours before i departed so getting a visa sorted out was a stress but well worth it - you can't even get a flight to india for that price.
also try bmibaby.co.uk
went to see my friends in italy for £20.
How about Florida?
The weather is hot and sunny this time of the year all the way into December. The beaches on the Gulf side are white and the sea is blue.
I definitely recommend it. I'm biased by the way.
Oops sorry, you can only fly for 2 hours? Shame, Florida won't work then. How about Amsterdam? The flight takes about an hour and a half. No beaches but it has a lot of other good stuff. Like Anne Franks house for instance!
People who fly these days have got a death wish, cache of shoulder launched missiles have been found that can easily bring down an aeroplane
destined for use by Al-quaida, and it is known that they are planning another spectacular strike similar to 9/11. Why should I pay good money to take a ridiculous chance on a plane, knowing what could happen.
The same problem is also with Cruise ships, because the terrorists are planning to attack those, which? when? who knows? thanks but no thanks, I will holiday in this country and take my chance with the weather.
We recently went on a late booking to Italy, it was allocation on arrival. It cost us a little over £200 each for four star, half board accommodation. We knew the airport (Venice) and resort area which which was Venetian Riviera. Flying time just over two hours which was great. We knew we were fairly safe from the lager lout culture as it doesn't seem to have reached Italy. Also there is only one resort on the Venetian Riviera and that's Lido di Jesolo. Very busy, bustling place, some would say rather like Blackpool... I beg to differ, far too upmarket to be like Blackpool, not at all tacky. I'd recommend it for the duration of the flight alone. I hate long flights.
You could try the holiday auctions at www.mytravel.com - great idea, and you can get some real bargains! We won an auction in March and went to Fuerteventura the following week, 3 star allocation on arrival - fantastic!

mr craig 06-09-2003, 13:17 You could always try the holiday hypermarket,or what ever its called at the drake house retail park near crystal peaks. My sister and her boyfriend go away on quite a few last min ute holidays and they always book them there.
Try the auction pages on www.lateescapes.com. Got four star accomm in Tenerife for £100 each! Other guests had paid £400. The price listed is for the total holiday, not per person. Last time i looked they had mainland
Spain for about £50 each.
Unfortunately, Tenerife was not the place I remembered it from my first holiday away at 18!! Or perhaps I wasn't as fussy then!
steelblade 08-09-2003, 08:21 Thanks for the helpful replies. Halevan thanks for your reply I feel soooo much better about flying now!
Anyway we have booked the holiday. We went down to that holiday hypermarket place at drakehouse on saturday and we have book 7 days in Es Cana, Ibiza.
We have paid £450 each for 3* all inclusive, including travel insurance, in flight food and coach transfers.
It seems quite reasonable to me.
So anyone ever been to Ibiza, Es Cana in particular if so what was it like?

a life lived in fear is a life half lived.
and steelblade: you paid £450 after we all gave you bargain basement advice?! ah well it was you're boyfriend's money so who cares!!!
never been to ibiza, but did majorca this time last year and it was quite peaceful and hot - have a great hol!
steelblade 08-09-2003, 10:19 We could have gone cheaper but it seemed only if we went allocation on arrival and after talking about it we decided we would rather pay a bit more and know exactly where we would be staying.
Anyway whats the point of money if you don't spend it.
I know what you mean about living in fear. I am petrified of flying but I refuse to let my fear hold me back from seeing other countries. I have my valium and hopefully that should see me through it!

If money's not a problem skip the valium and order a bottle of champagne as soon as you get on and ask for it to be served as soon as possible after take off. That way you'll have something to look forward to rather than worrying about the flight. Doesn't matter what time of day, we've had one at 7 a.m. and it works for us.
steelblade 08-09-2003, 12:30 Does anyone have any numbers or the names of any firms which travel to Manchester Airport, pretty cheapish.
We went by train last time but the trains being as unreliable as they are means we don't want to risk it, plus they are not that cheap.
Coach travel isn't really an option we want, it takes too long and the times we want are not available.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have used these before, pretty good service.
steelblade 08-09-2003, 13:00 Thanks Mikey I just called them but they said they don't cover Sheffield.
Try BMIbaby.com
not sure about this time of year but around Xmas they had some fantastic deals!!
Al :)
ZEDEX48K 23-03-2005, 13:53 Hi,
Could anyone give me web sites for late deal holidays that cover the med/canary islands. thinking of booking some sun soon, need a nice tan and break
Cheers
Zed
Try all the tour operators - first choice, my travel, thomson, bargainholidays.co.uk (I think it's .co.uk if not must be .com) or expedia.co.uk alternatively just google "late deals to the canaries". If you wanted to "do it yourself" instead or going through a tour operator you could book your flights through any of the aforementioned or skydeals.co.uk or cheapestflight.co.uk or even use a budget airline if you want to go to the costas etc. You can then use alpharooms.com or hotels.com for accommodation.
matsalleh 24-03-2005, 10:17 the problem with "diy" the flights tend to get booked up early so become more expensive the closer to travel time. Agree alpharooms are good.Sheffield based I believe but only online.

I completely forgot about the flights getting booked up early - good point. I never do last minute bookings you see tend to plan ahead so I get the best prices. I didn't know alpharooms was based round here.
retroboy 24-03-2005, 15:31 try this company - local sheffield company
http://www.voyagertraveldirect.co.uk/
