View Full Version : Insurance companies for young drivers, anyone knows where?
I've got a golf GTI 2.0 litre engine (my dream car) but the insurance companies charge a fortune for drivers under the age of 25. I'm 21, and tesco insurance have refused to insure me until I've had my licence for @ least a year. ( quite a few others have said that too)anyone young here and has cheap insurance?? let me know !!!!!!!!

^^^^ I've seen these recomended by quite a few people, dont know anyone who's delt with them tho.
Might be worth checking out some car forums and asking on there.

Ha ha! Don't worry, I really am a good driver!
Just have a look in the back of Max Power mate, they will have loads of companies that specialise in young drivers.
Mat
The quote for insurance on the car is a minimum of £3000 up to £4000 surely there must be something cheaper!!!!!!

Good luck, I would have got quotes long before buying the car, try Directline, they have been my cheapest so far.
My mums got me on hers for quite cheap with Co-op... their insurance covers anybody driving your car, no matter what age... but thats for extra drivers... not sure how cheap they are if you are actually a young driver...
I'm still saving up some money before I get my first car... maybe this autumn hopefully :D

....But you must have known what the insurance was gonna be before you bought the car. FFS, its a 2L GTI - and your only 21, what did you expect?
I thought it would be 2 grand max though not 4!
Perhaps you could have got quotes before you got the car tho?
Anyway, have you enquired if a family member could insure it and have you as a named driver?

Whats the rush ? why not wait until your 25 ? If its your dream car then your dream is not going to go away, you would be best getting something boring until you've built up a decent no claims bonus then going for it.
But anyways who am I to talk, have been in the same situation when I was 19, and paid over the odds for the insurance, but I really wanted the car and the craving for the car just wouldnt go away, and yes everyone said that I was mad to pay so much, but hey it was my money and my car.

fair enough, but you can only get quotes via email... And spam... Well...
Sony did you do the Pass Plus because that gets you a 30% no claims with some insurers?
To be honest though - you will be extremely lucky to get it cheaply for a car with a 2 litre engine!
Anyway good luck! you could try www.its4me.co.uk but I couldn't say for a certain that they cover young drivers worth a look anyway.
fox20thc 24-01-2005, 22:39 No promises... but Norwich Union Direct will offer a quote for you. They ask how long you have held a licence (including provisional years) which may help.
Pass Plus will get you over 40% introductory discount and if you go fully comp they have a young drivers bonus accelerator policy which runs for 9 months then you get the equivalent of
12 months.
Obviously you need to have no convictions but its worth a try

This might be worth trying if you have been a named driver on someone elses policy and have proof.
I also have, with Norwich Union, a discount for having no claims on other insurance. I have had my own insurance for 1 yr now but get more discount because ive been insured as a named driver on another policy for 6 years with no claims on that.

*Twinkle* 31-01-2005, 17:59 Just been in the same situation myself to be honest. After passing my test the back end of November, I just couldn't wait to get insured and on the road. It took me and my Parents ages to find a car, as we were looking for a mean machine (1.1) and something with as close to a full MOT as possible, with a long length of tax left if possible.
Just over a week ago we found the car. It's a 1.1 Rover 100, "N" reg. I hadn't done pass plus as most of the quotes I'd done online didn't even ask me if I'd done it or not. I found that with older cars such as mine, Norwich union didn't want to know... But they did if I typed in a new Suzuki Alto, which was a hell of a lot dearer. So the premium was cheaper for a newer car. Hmm!?!
But anyways, I finally insured through Direct Line, for £950. But that is to the bone, I have no legal cover/courtesy car or any of the other extras. I'm just trying to get my premium down. There was an initial installment of £180 then about ten months at 70 odd quid.
To be honest I don't think its that bad, but this is what I found really shocking... I did a dummy quote for my Boyfriend, Chris who is 21 in 2 months, with the exact same details etc for my car, and to my horror, his premium came to £1,210!!! Oh My God! As you can imagine, he won't be driving the damned thing at that price!

Would be, much more chance of an older car getting stolen then something more modern.

Really? Do you think?
If I were a criminal I'd nick something worth nicking... But if your theory is correct, it proves how I'd never be a successful criminal!
I always thought it went on the value of your car...? My car is worth about £600, yet this Suzuki Alto that I was going to get a loan for was £3,600. I must be wrong!
neeeeeeeeeek 02-02-2005, 16:37 4i insurance. They were the cheapest I could find when insuring my FTO, Other cheap companies are Norwich Union and you can try Quickfit.

With modern immobilisers and alarms factory fitted its as time consuming to break and drive away in say a Ford Puma as it is a Porsche, and as I’m sure you know when they take these cars they sooner steal the keys as its much easier. A lot of car thefts are older cars as they only take a screwdriver or something as crude.

I see what your saying, but that face value don’t matter much, a £100 car can do as much damage as a £20,000 one if you crash it right :)
