View Full Version : Westerns-who were the best cowboys, and which were the best films? cressida 21-10-2007, 18:24 I expect John Wayne will always be remembered, my favourite was James Stewart, do they still make westerns? PoddingtonP 21-10-2007, 18:32 John Wayne is my all time fave cowboy, I don't think theres one of his films i don't like. If they did still did make westerns they wouldnt be no where near like the oldies :( Pod JoeP 21-10-2007, 18:50 I've had soem involvement in film production and last year was approached by a writer I used to work with who'd got an absolutely excellent Western script. We've been working on it to tighten it up and bring it to within the normal size for a feature script, and I reckon it's a goer - but getting it in to production may be 'challenging'. :) There are still westerns made - 'Wyatt Earp', 'Tombstone', 'Lone Star', 'Brokeback Mountain', 'Once Upon a Time In Mexico', 'The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada', 'The Bride Wore Blood' - all within the last 10 years. And Joss Weedon's short lived but brilliant TV series 'Firefly' - a science fiction series - was set in a VERY Western Oriented universe. As for actors - John Wayne has GOT to be numero uno. Having said that, I'd add Robert Mitchum, James Stewart and Dean Martin. Best films for me - 'True Grit', 'The Sons of Katie Elder', 'El Dorado', 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance', 'The Hour of the Gun', 'Chisum' and 'Tombstone'. cressida 21-10-2007, 19:01 I remember in the late eighties or early nineties, staying up late to watch the western films on BBC 2, I thought I'd fall asleep but they were riveting StarSparkle 21-10-2007, 19:07 Numero Uno western actor for me would be Richard Widmark  But I was always very fond of Audie Murphy as well  And Robert Mitchum, of course StarSparkle cressida 21-10-2007, 19:35 Yes I also liked Robert Mitchum in the Film Noire film genre StarSparkle 21-10-2007, 19:51 Yes I also liked Robert Mitchum in the Film Noire film genre Fabulous actor - he could be a very safe, calming presence on screen - or play an utter psycho. Always one of my favourites. StarSparkle Tricky 21-10-2007, 20:45 CLINT CLINT Robert Mitchum too. Beakerzoid 21-10-2007, 23:53 Eastwood is the true Western icon in my book. His look and presence were iconic. John Wayne was terrible (in my opinion)! I can't watch his films without cringing at his awful delivery of lines of dialogue. Will agree with Mitchum too. A great actor. As for if they still make westerns... 3:10 To Yuma - amazing film, and a great return to the western genre plus coming soon.... The Assassination of Jesse James Here's hoping for more great westerns to come. Sierra 22-10-2007, 03:08 As for actors - John Wayne has GOT to be numero uno. The Duke was the king of movie cowboys. My favorite films of his are True Grit and The Searchers. True, his delivery was, well, wooden. But there will never be another like him. It's said he played the same character in all his films - John Wayne. Fabulous actor - he could be a very safe, calming presence on screen - or play an utter psycho. Always one of my favourites. StarSparkle Robert Mitchum made such a believeable psychopath, I always wondered about him. How much of the character was him and how much was acting? The murderous "preacher" he played in Night of the Hunter was beyond scary. His character had H-A-T-E tattooed on the knuckles of one hand and L-O-V-E on the other. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-N9LnkKQfuc&mode=related&search=Noche%20del%20Cazador%20Night%20of%20the%20 Hunter%20Robert%20Mitchum Robert Redford made a couple good westerns. Even if he's old enough to be my father. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FS57w67-clc&mode=related&search= :) Sierra Jonny5 22-10-2007, 09:16 Favourite cowboys: Gary Cooper, James Stewart, John Wayne, Clint, Robert Ryan (<-God), Henry Fonda Favourite Westerns: Man Of the West, High Noon, The Searchers, My Darling Clementine, McCabe & Mrs Miller, Tombstone, Naked Spurr, The Ox-Bow Incident, Once Upon a Time in the West, Wild Bunch, Dead Man, High Plains Drifter and so on. Code13 22-10-2007, 09:42 I love the vintage radio western series "The Six Shooter" starring James Stewart. Agent Orange 22-10-2007, 09:48 One word.......Unforgiven. What a truly fantastic western and one of Eastwood's great westerns. StarSparkle 22-10-2007, 12:02 Robert Mitchum made such a believeable psychopath, I always wondered about him. His character had H-A-T-E tattooed on the knuckles of one hand and L-O-V-E on the other. I think he was a very complex man. He was certainly 'wild' - some of the stories about him are very much not for a family forum! :D But his persona could be very reassuring and calming, in much the same way as John Wayne. As a child, I always felt 'safe' and that everything was going to be ok when he was on the screen. And he just oozed such charisma - he and Richard Widmark and John Wayne were the actors I recognised immediately as a child. StarSparkle PoddingtonP 22-10-2007, 12:45 Its still gotta be John Wayne for me, Starsparkle that is exactly how I felt and my Grandad looked just like him this big man with a big booming voice that would go to the end of the earth and back to make us safe. JoeP . yep there is all those new films but they just dont have the *thing* the oldies did they are really excellent films but just lack the *thing* :D GOOD LUCK with your script btw shells2909 22-10-2007, 12:50 One word.......Unforgiven. What a truly fantastic western and one of Eastwood's great westerns. Watched this for the first time ever last night, really enjoyed it. Love a good western and thought Clint was brilliant in it (along with Gene Hackman!) cressida 22-10-2007, 16:09 I've had soem involvement in film production and last year was approached by a writer I used to work with who'd got an absolutely excellent Western script.
