I am an amateur, have never had a digital camera before, and saw an advert yesterday for a half price offer for one week only at Boots for a : Fujifilm F480 8.2. Mega Pixel digital camera. It says it is £99.99. a saving of £100. Is this a good camera for a beginner.? (wide zoom 4x)

How serious do you want to be about your photography? Do you want something small and light to record trips and occasions? Do you aspire to take technically better pictures? If you can tell us more about what you want to do, perhaps someone here can offer good advice. There are some nice cameras around for £100 and upwards.

I would go for a Fuji F40 (http://www.bestpricedbrands.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=229&sendroicid=2a2a4ce5-d947-49cd-bad7-87c2a1bbe1cf&sendroiad=1071222053&sendroikwd=fuji+f40) for about the same price. It is very sensitive and allows you to take pictures indoors without flash. No redeye and none of the 'rabbit caught in the headlights' look that you get with flash cameras going off. My wife has a slightly older version for parties and the like. A quick read of the manual is required but the results are rather good.

Millions of people would say yes! I use a different brand so can't really comment, except to say that I met this person (http://lostinphotography.my-expressions.com/) when I was in the US a couple of years ago and she had a Canon 300D. She has developed tremendously over the last couple of years and, looking at her website, I would say that has really got to grips with that camera. You can pick up a used 300D for £100 or so these days, so could be a good starting point?
