So, this is Eriksson's Ploy for the game against Holland is it?

Wright-Phillips was expected to replace Beckham on the right-hand side of midfield in the friendly at Villa Park.

But Eriksson said: "It's not his best position but I'm sure Shaun could also play on the left. Even if, for Shaun, it's better to be on the right.

I don't see the point in this myself.

I think Beckham should be dropped and Wright Phillips take his place.
Greening on the left and Ashley Cole at left back.
I think Beckham reached a comfort zone and thinks he can just turn up and play. Not getting selected for a squad or a place on the bench might jolt him back to his best.
I'm sick of seeing England try right footed players on the left wing. It does not work. Wright Phillips can go past people, shoot and cross and he is going to have beckhams place in the next couple of years. May as well give him a chance now.

Like all average to poor managers, Eriksson thinks altering your thinking over time due to changing circumstances is a sign of weakness.

He seems to have trouble accepting the fact that Beckham is past his peak, and making him an automatic selection is just cutting off his nose to spite his face.
That doesn't just apply to Beckham, he has consistently shown "loyalty" to players who are out of form, and alienated the in form players who he overlooks.

Loyalty may be an admirable quality in your personal life, but he's being paid to pick a winning team, not look after his mates.

Greening?! I know the situtation is bad, but that's just ridiculous.

Shall we be charitable and guess he meant Downing?

I did mean Downing. He has done well this season, is left footed and can go past people.

Good post and I completely agree.

His should be looking to pick the in form players at all times IMO and it shouldn't matter what you've achieved in the past
