This is my first post on the board... so ey up ! As an exiled Yorkshireman living just outside Leicester, I hope you lot can help me out. Does anyone know where I can lay my hands on any local books or pictures on South Yorkshire Pits I'm particularly interested in Barnburgh Pit, where I lived- virtually on the pit top (Green Lane to be exact!) from 1956-1970.

I know there is a good stall on Barnsley Market with loads of pictures and books on all aspects of South Yorkshire, but if anyone knows of any that I can get hold of by post, then I'd really appreciate it. I hope you can help me out in my search.

Thanks

Try the Yorkshire Mining Museum they have a large selection of books relating to all the local pits and if you have the time it's a very interesting day out and best of all it's all free.
Just do a search on google for details.
By the way it's my first post too so welcome.

If you have a look at many of the local history threads you're bound to come across this site www.picturesheffield.com
It's the Sheffield Library photo collection, searchable online, and covers the area around as well. You can download low-res pictures or order very good quality prints online. Worth a try!

Thanks to one and all for the reply's-very useful. I might try and get to Mining museum this year-I have a colleague here in Leicester who visited on Boxing Day, and he really enjoyed it. Thanks Paul, welcome along too!

The Sheffield pictures site looks promising as well, loads of images there to keep me busyso thanks algy.

Thanks Jimmy for the Waterstones suggestion-whether South Yorkshire local books will be available down here I don't know-but I'll give it a try.

Thanks again, and I'll let you know how I get on
