anyone with imformation about nichols building specifically when it was used as a grocery wholesaler and tea merchants in early part of last century.

My aunt Ginny, who would have been born in the late 1800's always said that her Uncle Tom should have inheriited Nichols.
Apparently he was the illegitimate son of the owner.
She had all the documents associated with it. I think there was some wording of natural son that was misconstrued.
Uncle Tom became a Tramp and she used to give him a meal occ when he turned up.
I was a child when all this was happening and all I knew was that he stank to high heaven and was filthy. I suppose she remembered him in his youth when he was different.
When I first started wrk in 1952 Nichols must have had the contract to supply the council with groceries as I remember.

thanks hazel.i am looking into my family history(nichols)and think that the owner was related.apparently he would have nothing to do with the family or the other way around. all the nichols going back to 1754 at least came from bradfield and stannington.they were blacksmiths . andrew nichols.

:thumbsup: Hi in the 1876 they where at 72 Langsett Road,in 1903 /1911 at Langsett Road and 231 Gibralter St by 1927 it was Shalesmoor, If you look in the Directories at Sheffield library you could pinpoint the year they moved to Shalesmoor.

I used to work at ARGENT STEEL on Matthew street, I still go down to see my mates every thursday dinner, and as I write this the Nags Head pub is being demolished:( and I am informed the it won't be long before the Nicols building meets the same fate.
I don't know this for a fact but the building next to argent is coming down and this joins onto the nicols.:loopy:
