I grew up on Hyde Park Flats - lived there from 1970 and moved off in 1988 because they were being emptied for the Student Games. I also went to St. Johns CofE on Manor Oaks Road which is now sadly a burned out shell :(

I was on Ropery. Must admit it was a good place to grow up although it had turned nasty by the time I moved off. The number of times I almost got my head caved in by an ice-pop being flung over the wall by a caring parent to cool down their red faced offspring is unbelievable! Add to that the 10p wrapped in kitchen-roll to go and get a jubilee from Rosita.... I don't know how I lived to tell the tale! : )

We lived on Ropery for a couple of years and moved away when they were emptied also (no13). I have also posted on your 'Remember Hurlfield' thread. I must know you!

I lived at No. 81 - I was 2 when we moved on there and just 20 when I moved off. A lot of my family lived on the flats too - my uncle, aunt and cousin lived on Chequers, my nan and grandad lived on High Pavement and another aunt and uncle lived on Hyde Park Terrace. Also, my dad and my grandad had connections with Park Gardeners Club (the old one, under the flats) for years. When I got married in April '88 the service was at St. Johns Church and the reception was in the concert room of the Park Gardeners! Proves it's not what you know but who you know ;)

Hi, caronlel,

Welcome to the forum.

There are absolute shedloads of us on here who are "ex-Hyde Parkers", I'm one of them...

There are loads of threads where HPF (And PHF- Park Hill Flats And Kelvin, too!) is mentioned, and loads of threads specific to HPF, eg this one:-

http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=59314&highlight=hyde+park+flats

and this one

and this one

lots of fascinating stories, and reminiscences.

When we were all been moved off Hyde Park for the Student Games I moved on to Manor Oaks Road - 181, near the Post Office. Stayed on there for 8 years so my daughter ended up going to St. Johns School just as I had and I was amazed to find at least 2 of my old teachers were still there! :o

My grandad died in 1984 - he was called "Steve" Stephenson. His real name was Joseph Henry but I don't think anyone evercalled him this, not even my nan!

My dad is Jack Booker and had links with the club until it went private a few years ago.

Apparently it was no longer used, St. Johns merged with St. Oswalds on Southend Road. Now there's a partnership I didn't see coming! There was talk of it being arson originally but apparently this was disproved. It is still in the same condition, still burnt down to the brickwork but then again, an open-plan school with 6 courses of bricks and the rest built from wood was a bit of an accident waiting to happen. I'm surprised it lasted so long!!

yup. Lord Row (note, not LordS Row)was two-below the topmost row on the biggest block.
from ground up it went High Pavement, Bevis, Chancel, Dacre, Lord, Rowland and Saint Johns.

I was on Dacre and we were about 10 or so floors up. I hated being at height, and used to walk along the walkway pressed up really tightly against the front doors. lol, I was so close to the front doors, if I'd been any closer, I'd have been inside the flats.

On the small block, with the pub called the Samuel Plimsoll, the rows were named Bungay row, Chequers, Derwent and Ropery. I believe the top row (the penthouses) were named Cricket inn Row.

Hi caronlel,
I lived on Derwent Street (behind Maltravers Road and just off Cricket Inn Road) from 1962 - 1974 (when they pulled our old back-to-back houses down). Have great memories of Hyde Park Flats as we used to knock around there all the time. I went to St Johns School, then Hurlfield. I stood on Sky Edge and watched the 'Big' block being blown up - a lot of good memories uo in smoke! Coudn't start to tell you about the things we got up to (nicking beer from the dog track and milk from the sliding hatches in the flats etc.) but hey! What a fantastic childhood it was!

we lived on Dacre Row ( 42 ) as well for years.
Used to drive deaf and dumb man bonkers ( we were kids feel bad about it thinking back now ).
Always playing football and as someone said it was scary up there, we used to kick the ball over and watch it fall to the ground by hanging over the balcony :loopy::loopy:
We were on the side that overlooked the church and had family on Lord row who overlooked the dog track.
Some good sledging in winter and great football on the grass in the middle bit.
Chucking coins as hard as you could at the Sally Ann sunday mornings :hihi:
Memories that stay with you forever.

The community centre was at the end of the shops, on the "High Pavement" row... it was on the corner as you went along toward the bridge that led you to the long, low block that had the Samuel Plimsoll Pub underneath it, (the one that's now refurbished and is run by Northern Counties)

The Launderette was underneath the massive block, just where it joined the smaller block that stands nearer town (the one with Reubens and Link Rows on it that's also refurb-ed called Harold Lambert Court.) more or less underneath the Crow's Nest pub, near the Park Gardener's club. they weern't too far apart, just on different levels of the flats.

I was born at 66 Dacre Row & not long after went to live on the Wybourn but I do remember people. My mam worked in the Target & the Crows nest & I remember going to Skeggy with the Park Gardeners. We had a dog that raced there called JUST JOE, but not many ever beat CLOVER. It was sad when my mam told me about Des De Freitas though & I´ll tell you all a funny story about him:I went one day to Sheaf valley baths with him one day (using my mams dole card to get in for free because I had joined the army).Des was elbows on the poolside in the water chatting somebody up,he asked me for a loan to invite her to a coffee. She was due to get out before us so I said i´d go to the changing rooms with him & get the money when the siren went off ,well it went off & Des´s face was a picture when he saw she only had 1 leg!!! but I gave him the money & he said they had a wonderful time.

I Lived there for 10 years, but what i would like to know is where the names of the landings came from! Does anyone know!

I lived on Henry Row

Where was that, that you lived, then, cra1g? *puzzled*

There was no Henry row on HPF, or any of the others in the three developments, which included Kelvin and PHF.

on HPF there were *big block*
High Pavement Row
Bevis Row
Chancel Row
Dacre Row
Lord Row
Rowland Row (Roland?)
and St John's Row

*small block* (now the red-clad NCHA block, and now have different names to the ones originally given such as "Castle Walk")

Bungay Row
Chequers Row
Derwent Row
Ropery Row
Cricket Inn Gardens

*Smaller block* (now the green-clad block, Harold Lambert Court)

High pavement row,
Reubens (Rubens?) row
Link row
I forget the name of the top floor - was it manor oaks gardens?)

*Smallest block* (nearest town)
Link row
Snow hill row
Stepney row

these "rows" were pretty much all named after the streets that were originally around the district:- Lord Street, Dacre Street, Bungay Street, Stepney Street, Snow Hill... etc, etc. you can see the old street names if you look on an old map pre clearance in the early 1950's.

It was the same with PHF and Kelvin:- on PHF, Norwich St was immortalised as Norwich Row, Long Henry St became Long Henry Row, Hague St became Hague row, and Gilbert St became Gilbert Row. Indeed you can still see four of the old roads (not including South Street) to the front of PHF, between the tram (which runs along what used to be Granville St) and PHF itself.

You can see the old cobbled streets, running diagonally up the now-grassy bank. there is one that runs up to the old sweet factory, and by gosh! that one looks almost vertical!!!

In Kelvin, when the old streets were demolished, again, the rows, those "streets in the sky", were named after the old streets that were there before the redevelopment:- Kelvin walk, Woollen walk and Edith Walk were the main ones I remember, again, I am struggling to remember the name of the fourth "walk"on Kelvin. I'm sure it was "Portland" after what was Portland Street?

Hi everyone.
As you can see I am new on SF. What a trip down memory lane reading this thread was.
My family moved onto Hyde park in 1976. We lived above the Crows Nest Pub.
I would like to ask if anyone can remember what the name of the pub was that stood right at the end of either Hyde Park Walk or Hyde Park Terrace?
Also could any one clarify that there used to be a groceryshop/supermarket called Bradshaws on High Pavement?
Thanks

I thought Bradshaws was on Pavement Row, down on Park hill. (rather than high pavement)

I remember the Co-op, and Sue's Shop, as well as the paper shop on High pavement, (there was a bookies, the rent office, a freezer shop and what I think was a hairdressers that became the community association offices, on the actual shops and the tenants' hall where they held the youth club (the Hyde- away?) and the bingo nights.

Hi Plain Talker. The shop I'm thinking of was on High Pavement around 1978. There could also have been one on The Pavement because the same man also had a shop in Fitzalan Square at the same time

Correctimundo! And the Earl George IIRC was the one on the shops on Park Hill

(thePHF had four pubs, The Link, The Parkway, The Scottish Queen and the Earl George, HPF had The Samuel Plimsoll, The Crow's Nest, The Target, and the Park Gardeners Club, with the Earl Francis sort of a little way away, off the flats complex)

I went to Hurlfield school from '78. I remember we used to get on the bus outside the New Inn. Or if we were skiving that day, just nip round the corner where the parents couldn't see us.
I remember the truant officer was called Mr Caine. How very appropriate!!

Yo scrapper what's your real name maybe i know you or remember you. My family were all atheletic good at all sports. Mick brown doesn't ring a bell. What about mark jarret, the last time i was over he was doing well for him self and as got a big dog in is backyard name bronze rotty. Remember dolly dad, laurford all the kids were afraid of him. We'd be outside playing and he would say go inside and guess what we'd go in side.

Hi Plain Talker. The shop I'm thinking of was on High Pavement around 1978. There could also have been one on The Pavement because the same man also had a shop in Fitzalan Square at the same time

Yipeeeeeeeee I've remembered. It was Bradshaws:loopy:

God where do i start? i lived there for 8 years or more before moving to norfolk park. I can remember them coming round changing all the font door locks for "erm erm" high security locks that kids could put there arms though the letter boxes and unlock the twistable lock other side before they come round and put the letter box gaurd on. I remember the jcb smashing up the play area outside the target pub before they come and put all the new block paving and shubbery etc... before they did that it was all open and 3ft x 3ft slabs from the community centre end to the ramps down to the stepney buildings....when they changed it it was like the wizard of oz and the "Red bricked roads" What a waste of money as one of the times i visted it was piled high near the shops with materials being striped from the flats before being demolished. Loads of names i remember....John from chancel....Pete from Bevis...Janet and ???? (The Ace BMXer And Rap DJ) ....Bono...Clair...Sammy....Scot from Chancel....Craig Etc Etc
I could make a million photos from whats in my mind still from all the differant parts of hyde park....I just wish id have taken many of them esp at night time looking out over the city and don valley area.. remember the "bang bang" of the steel works hammer you could hear when it was quiet at night??
Can ur remember em getting the new super duper electric caretakers carts which were much faster than the older ones.

If only i could paint my memories of hyde park flats onto paper it would be like looking at a 3d computerised image lols.

I remember Sue from the shop very well, and Des's number being about no 18 sounds about right as his flat was directly over the shops.

Hello,
My auntie Doreen lived on Ropery Row,i think in the late 60s early 70s my mother took me visiting there. When we came out there was a gang of people around the lift at the bottom. The lift was slotted in blood!
Does anyone have the story?
