Bushbaby 24-10-2007, 17:06 I drove past HW's last week for the first time in years and was sad to see it gone I went on a couple of their works trips in the 70s, as my mate's brother (Manx) worked there and got us some tickets. I remember a coach outing to Nottingham (I think) where we took part in a pub games night...I seem to recall getting very drunk! gritter1960 26-10-2007, 15:47 :help:Did anyone work at Hyram Wild on Herries road (cutlery) in the early days as I have some photo's of workers possibly late sixty's or seventy's and would like some info please. Amanda Jonpl 07-05-2008, 17:48 I remember visiting the Hiram Wild factory shops on Solly Street and Herries Road. Sad to say, they are no longer there. Hiram Wild's name lives on under the guise of J & C Products who are based at 9, cupola. However, when I last checked everything was made to order. devlin 09-05-2008, 10:57 I think that Hiram Wilds until recently belonged to an old guy who lived in Todwick called Harry Flowers.... Harry moved to live near his daughter in Chesterfield several years ago and he was in his mid 80's then so not even sure he will still be alive but I remember him telling me that HW's would have to go as there was no one in his family to carry it on? glory 23-07-2008, 10:09 :help:Did anyone work at Hyram Wild on Herries road (cutlery) in the early days as I have some photo's of workers possibly late sixty's or seventy's and would like some info please. :thumbsup:Hey! my sister worked at Hyram Wilde nick named little Linda also my brother worked there for a short while with her Mark, but Linda worked there for a few years, and I think Dennis White and Eileen were there also BENSUEMO 24-07-2008, 20:21 I didn't work at Hiram Wild but called on them as an engineering supplier almost on a weekly basis. Supplied bearings and transmission products for quite a few years to the maintenance staff. Don't remember the engineer's name, an oldish chap, it will come to me eventually but he eventually retired and Dennis Spooner took over. I'm going back a few years but remember Dennis as a very decent chap. Nah - David Hartley's dad bought Hiram's for him from John Wild... Last one of the family to own it - David ended up running what was left of the company into the ground... The death throes were horrible to see, and left many people who had worked there for all or most of their lives out of work... Anyone on here work there in the last days??? Jonpl 19-06-2009, 12:13 I recently bought some "Hiram Wild" branded cutlery from J & C Products custom made to order which suggests that there's still some manufacturing activity despite it not being the medium to large scale employer Hiram Wild was! shane39 19-06-2009, 16:47 My sister(Mandy Woods) worked there in the early 80s.She used to always come home with black hands n face.lol. Nah, looks like Jason and Craig Coleman (who both worked at Hiram's whilst the Hartley's were busy driving it into the ground) have rights over the name, and can still use it when getting them stamped from somewhere like Nickel Blanks... tyward 23-06-2009, 21:20 Hi Thank for everybody's feedback i am trying to find an a3 scanner so to put all the photo's on line . photo's of hyrum wild women packing cutlery ect about 10 in all Jonpl 24-06-2009, 14:31 Nah, looks like Jason and Craig Coleman (who both worked at Hiram's whilst the Hartley's were busy driving it into the ground) have rights over the name, and can still use it when getting them stamped from somewhere like Nickel Blanks... Their registered office is at the Cupola. I presumed that they manufactured to order there. So Hiram Wild is just a name these days? Would they be stamped at Carrs? Does anyone know if anyone still produces Sheffield cutlery for schools, hospitals, airlines, armed forces, Government - national and local, etc. ? Leaf12 08-07-2009, 07:49 J & C still manufacture at their premises a full range of stamped blades / spoon & fork stubs (i have visited and seen the equipment). When it comes to "traditional sheffield cutlery", like any other company in the industry they will have to purchase the blanks from what is now Carrs. They must have acquired the Hiram Wild name to put on the cutlery. jewls29 09-07-2009, 20:07 I worked at Hiram's in the late 70's. Is this the Cupola on Middlewood Road? Lady Star 10-07-2009, 12:20 Their registered office is at the Cupola. I presumed that they manufactured to order there. So Hiram Wild is just a name these days? Would they be stamped at Carrs? Does anyone know if anyone still produces Sheffield cutlery for schools, hospitals, airlines, armed forces, Government - national and local, etc. ? I know that Peter took the MOD contract with him to Arthur Price (Deeley's) after Hiram's shut - maybe they do the hospitals too? Airline cutlery orders stopped as soon as 9/11 happened - airlines don't use metal cutlery anymore, never understood what the connection was, but in someones head one was made! Have you seen Cupola? It's just a shed type thing - god knows what they're up to in there. Re etching, that could be done anywhere - etching machines aren't big... Lady Star 10-07-2009, 12:21 Cupola? Is this the Cupola on Middlewood Road? No, there is a tiny street called Cupola at the back of Corporation st... Just a alley with a couple of little sheds on it... telekoness1 11-07-2009, 12:20 Both my mum and gran worked there ages ago, im 41 years old and they worked there while I was at school. Mums name is Cynthia Fox she worked in the offices and my grans name was Emily Poole, she worked in the kitchen thing near the offices. If you need anymore info just let me know :) For the record it is Hiram Wild lol Leaf12 13-07-2009, 16:29 As a customer I went to collect my goods, they have all the equipment to produce the blades from the raw material (steel coils), pressing, serrating equipment and polishing also the etching equipment, I also so other equipment which looked like glazing wheels different type polishing machines etc. It may be a small operation but I guess that is how they keep the costs in control and stay in business which I am thankfull for. I must also say that the standard of the products from J & C is much higher than what I got when it was Hiram Wild. I also see that AC UK gives a similar comment under one of the other topics "Hiram Wild are still cutting it". This was posted back in Nov 06. That's quite nice actually - when I knew them at Hiram's I wouldn't have thought that either of them would have had it in them - this is a nice suprise! I had been told by others who worked with them at Hiram's that they had set up a import business, so are they finishing foreign cutlery? Same as David Mellor? Or are they polishing Sheffield blanks? Just that the foreign cutlery tends to have a better finsh than Sheffield stuff, as the machines haven't been updated since the 40's/50's in Sheff, whereas the far east has new kit that works better! Sad but true! Jonpl 13-07-2009, 22:53 "I had been told by others who worked with them at Hiram's that they had set up a import business, so are they finishing foreign cutlery?" Looking at their brochures, it appears that they're operating a "mixed economy" - some Sheffield made and some cheaper imported stuff. http://www.hiramwild.com Lady Star 14-07-2009, 22:45 "I had been told by others who worked with them at Hiram's that they had set up a import business, so are they finishing foreign cutlery?" Obviously some of the wording could do with being changed, since they won't be the largest provider of sheffield flatware from Cupola, will they? Not with Deeley's still in the picture, and I'm not sure if a few of the other old guard might might still be around... It was the biggest when they had Herries Rd and Petre Street though... tyward 20-07-2009, 19:53 Hi Anyone interested I have now put photo.s online If anyone knows when they were taken please let me know Please go to www.flickr.com/photos/22935562@N03/ |
