View Full Version : Traffic & Parking enforcement - or lack of
Just a general observation on my bus journey home along Abbeydale Road tonight, there seems to be a lot of parked cars in the bus lanes and a number of cyclists riding round with no lights on their bike, and nothing seems to be done about it....
Is this a sign the new system is not working?
satman2222 17-10-2007, 18:28 Naw - they only operate to fleece motorists round the city centre and the Hallamshire hospital. There are regularly at least 9 cars parked on the yellow lines in Station Road Chapeltown, causing near gridlock, but nothing is ever done about it!
dan_999uk 17-10-2007, 18:31 Every 10 or 15 minutes through the restricted times there is a Council parking services car moving on and ticketing cars outside the off-licence and cashpoint on London Road.
People riding without lights is a job for the police, but it's not really that high a priority in the scheme of things.
Some would say there is too much parking enforcement....but not me. I often ride home along Abbeydale Road and cars parked where they shouldn't be is probably one of my biggest gripes. They slow traffic down, force me to pull out into the traffic and some people do like to open their doors without looking.
As for cyclists without lights, that's just stupidity (unless it's daylight of course)...personally I'm lit up like a christmas tree....of course that can give some people something to aim for :D.
I've noticed a startling number of cyclists without lights in recent evenings- surely not having decent lights on your pushbike in the dark is the height of stupidity (and not just because it could and should result in a criminal record)?
The classic refusal to do anything about illegal parking is round places of worship I can think of two that when ever they are in use there are cars parked all over the double yellow lines and pavements and bus stops etc etc etc
Would that be the two Cathedrals?
Or perhaps St Thomas's at Philadelphia and the one at Crookes?

The influcx of people into the city at this time of year is the norm and the enforcing authority the council know where the problem areas are. Little is done becaues they are understaffed for a city of this size. Not only that organisation is not their strongest point. The infrastructore of the highways and the decline of governement funding to aid in the city's development backs this but the hornduse hourly, daily, weakly, monthly and yearly traffic congestion shows there incompetance. When will they start earning their money
As the council cant be arsed to spell check.

Worksop Road in Attercliffe is a classic example of this. Cars all over the pavement too. Its probably considered acceptable in Baghdad.

I know nothing about parking in Baghdad (though I understand tailgating mercenaries SUVs there can be rather dangerous) and I doubt many people in Attercliffe do, shall we stick to Sheffield?
heavenlyarts 17-10-2007, 22:39 THe worst example of this problem is not at places of religious worship but around our two citadels of football.
Every home game hundreds of cars are parked illegally and nothing is done.
dan_999uk 18-10-2007, 00:25 A fine point well made I think.
wizadooo 18-10-2007, 11:10 I think you will find most parking matters in Sheffield which were generally hammered by the Police to keep things flowing have now been decriminalised, therefore, they have no direct power to enforce the contraventions (ie. double yellow lines/bus lanes etc.) Obviously they still retain the power for other offences such as unnecessary obstruction, which I would suggest most as described above would constitute !
The Council enforcers clearly have limited resources and focus on hot spots, if you are concerned ring them, soon we will have that many hot spots it will feel like the Med, now theres lurvly !

I've seen quite a few people posing on the Forum about getting parking tickets while they are at the footy, so I think you are wrong on that one.
Has anyone who is moaning on this thread actually mentioned their concerns to Parking Services?
Had to take my son to Sheffield Childrens hos this morning for an outpatient appointment. Set off from home at 8-15 for an 10-20 appointment. Went to park in park and ride as per , at meadowhall and couldnt get in , took the car over to the shopping centre to leave it there. On entering Meadowhall iva , M and S upstairs to walk over the bridge when a SYPTE guy , asked me where i was going . Told him for the tram and explained why , he said we couldnt park there , only shopping center customers. I ve done it for years i said , NO , you re not allowed. Fair enough , but there was only me in the car park.
Got back in the car slightly disgruntled , went back to park and ride and spoke to a couple of SYPTE guys there , who helped me and directed where i could park my car.
Well done guys , as I said to you this morning , really appreciate your actions. Nice to know not everyones a jobworth.

If they really wanted to do anything to tackle it, they would fine offenders a phenomenal amount for parking in bus lanes.
