View Full Version : Choose a legacy to the world
HappyHoosier 17-10-2007, 03:53 You're being lauded after your death at the ripe old age of 98. Would you rather be remembered as (choose one):
A.) a brilliant scientist who, in a secluded laboratory, invented a device/medicine/etc. that would save millions of lives and end much suffering throughout the world?
B.) a selfless humanitarian who, working among the unfortunate masses and caring for their basic needs, became a world-wide ambassador for peace, love , hope and understanding?
Explain why, if you wish.
HappyHoosier 17-10-2007, 13:24 I want to be the scientist (a.)
Can't I be both and discover the scientific formula for love, peace and happiness?
I'll play to my strengths; I'd be the scientist. I know I don't have the capacity to be the selfless humanitarian, and I wouldn't be able to masquerade as such either.
The problem is that many of the big names in science, at the top of their profession, have got there on the backs of their postgraduate students' and postdoctoral colleagues' endeavours. I'm not a humanitarian, but I'm not that selfish and ruthless either. I'd be the hard-working scientist, acknowledged only within her field.
pleathwood 17-10-2007, 13:52 I'm more geek than a social person so (a) for me please
fabulous_girl 17-10-2007, 13:54 b) - I like to meet people and was rubbish at science at school!
HappyHoosier 17-10-2007, 13:58 Can't I be both and discover the scientific formula for love, peace and happiness?
Well, the OP clearly states "choose ONE." But I must admit the "medicine/device/etc." phrase is just vague enough that you could insert "the scientific formula for love, peace and happiness" in that spot. So, OK, just this once, I'll make an exception.
I'll also give you 10 points for ingenuity.
*reminds self to check posts for loopholes*
Can't I put in my will that I don't *want* to be remembered?
B because i'm more spiritual then scientific, I love travelling, I like to help people in whichever way possible and think that peace, love, hope and understanding are important things in the world.
Agent Orange 17-10-2007, 14:27 Neither... would rather be a dictator or summat like. Bad guys get to have all the fun and are remembered far more than do gooders :D :D
Saying that, if I really had to choose between the two above then I'd go with option B as I'm more caring than I am a scientist and I would make a lousy dictator anyway :D
Crayfish 17-10-2007, 14:43 It'd have to be A. That's more or less my plan for life anyway.
I've already got the 'secluded laboratory' part down pat, it's just the 'brilliant' and 'inventing things' parts that need work.
HappyHoosier 17-10-2007, 14:43 Can't I put in my will that I don't *want* to be remembered?
Yes, you can put that in your will. But it's completely unenforceable. So, you might as well do something worth remembering while you're here.
HappyHoosier 17-10-2007, 14:46 BTW... as this is a complete fantasy, you do not have experience or talent in maths and sciences to choose a.) By the same token, curmudgeons and misanthropes may choose b.)

It's an imaginary tablet that makes you act like a grown-up instead of a cranky crybaby. I hand them out frequently, and sometimes even write prescriptions.:D
