View Full Version : Saddest song you've ever heard
Lestat suggested sad movies. What about sad songs? I was listening to an old Pearl Jam CD, and I thought "Last Kiss" was so sad.
What's the saddest song you've ever heard?
:) Sierra
Most of the Time - Bob Dylan
A very sad song in my opinion.
Also, Anna Begins - Counting Crows.

True Love Waits- Radiohead - entirely for personal reasons. I can't listen to it now. 'I'm not living, I'm just killing time' is the lyric.
UNKLE = what are you to me? is one i'm feeling right now - again for my own reasons.
I think there is generally sad stuff like Baber's adagio for strings (don't be kicking off the party with that one)
But a sad song can be anything if it ties you to a moment.
Funniest sad song Shaun Of the Dead, can't remember the track but he's trying to cheer shaun up after being dumped and it comes on the juke box.
'Who the ****s put this on?'
Shaun weeping, 'Its on random!'

carcrash 20-01-2005, 03:24 Band of gold by Freda Payne has got to be one of the saddest songs every written.
Now that you're gone
All that's left is a band of gold
All that's left of the dream I hold
Is a band of gold
And the memories of what love could be
If you are still here with me
You took me from the shelter of a mother I had never known
Who loved many others
We kissed after taking vows
But that night on our honeymoon
We stayed in separate rooms
I wait in the darkness of my lonely room
Filled with sadness, filled with gloom
Hoping soon that you'll walk
Back through that door
And love me like you tried before
Since you've been gone
All that's left is a band of gold
All that's left of the dream I hold
Is a band of gold
And the dream of what love could be
If you are still here with me
Ooh, don't you know that I wait in the darkness of my lonely room
Filled with sadness, filled with gloom
Hoping soon that you'll walk
Back through that door
And love me like you tried before
Since you've been gone
All that's left is a band of gold
All that's left of the dream I hold
Is a band of gold
And the dream of what love could be
If you are still here with me
So from what I can gather this motherless lass has got herself hitched to a bloke who cannot get on up like a sex machine and he may even bat for the other team whilst questioning wether her mother might have plyed her trade as a woman of the night, sat waiting and hoping that it may turn out ok in the end.
A fantastic pop song and one that I love dearly.
I wonder who's kissing her now,
I wonder who's teaching her how,
I wonder who's looking into her eyes,
breathing sighs, telling lies.
I wonder who's buying the wine
for lips that I used to call mine.
I wonder if she
ever tells him of me,
I wonder who's kissing her now.
The godlike genius of Ray Charles
When we two parted
In silence and tears,
Half broken-hearted
To sever for years,
Pale grew thy cheek and cold,
Colder thy kiss;
Truly that hour foretold
Sorrow to this.
The dew of the morning
Sunk chill on my brow--
It felt like the warning
Of what I feel now.
Thy vows are all broken,
And light is thy fame:
I hear thy name spoken,
And share in its shame.
They name thee before me,
A knell to mine ear;
A shudder comes o'er me--
Why wert thou so dear?
They know not I knew thee,
Who knew thee too well:
Lond, long shall I rue thee,
Too deeply to tell.
I secret we met--
I silence I grieve,
That thy heart could forget,
Thy spirit deceive.
If I should meet thee
After long years,
How should I greet thee?
With silence and tears.
Lord Byron
Unintended, on Muse's Showbiz album is incredibly morose, just thinking about it is slightly depressing...
carcrash,
I love that song. Freda Payne is still going strong, and she looks fabulous!

For some reason "Coat of many Colors" by Dolly Parton made me cry when I was a kid. It's a true story. She grew up very poor in Tennessee, and her mother literally sewed her a coat out of rags because they had no money to buy one. She was thrilled to get so much of her mother's attention, as she had many siblings.
But when she wore proudly wore the coat to school, the other kids laughed at her. Yeah, kids are horrid to each other.

Ahhh, lovely poem by Byron!

I know it's supposed to be uplifting & positive but "Days" by the Kinks (although I prefer Kirsty MacColl's version) gets me every time.
"She Goes On" by Crowded House & Forever Autumn can have the same effect too - although none of these songs made a lump appear in my throat in my teens so I guess I must have gotten soppier in my old age.
I have to confess that sometimes the oddest of songs brings a lump to my throat. I wonder how many other people have experienced that lump in the throat feeling after hearing that song "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" (I have this under control now - honestly!)
Ousetunes 20-01-2005, 07:24 Last night, after a few Shandys, I played my wife the songs I want playing at my funeral. You're not likely to know them but as I'm carried in, courtesy of John Fairest, I want George Harrison's All Things Must Pass. When everyone is looking forward to getting the drinks in at the wake, I want Ase's Death from Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Greig. This latter choice is frankly, a musical equivalent of *death*.
But, it is also staggeringly beautiful. My wife told me to turn it off, so I had to put the Three Degrees CD on instead.
Kristian 20-01-2005, 07:28 OMG I thought I was the only sad one when it came to pre-selecting fueral songs!
I am having
It's hard to make a stand by Sheryl Crow
Dream a little Dream of me by Mammas and Poppas
and as the coffin goes through the curtains..
Wish me Luck as you Wave me Goodbye by Gracie Fields!
That should make some of them raise a smile!

Lickable 20-01-2005, 07:51 Sad Eye - Pretty Things
Well if you ever baby,
Feel like changing your mind,
Don't think twice just take it easy,
Anything you do will please me.
Just as long as you see me.
And if you ever baby,
Feel like starting again,
All you gotta do is phone me,
There is nothing you need show me.
Just as long as you know me.
Well I knocked on every door,
Looked on every sea and shore.
Just to find that you had left me.
You were a special one,
Like the setting of the sun,
Now it's too late to help me.
It has such a Sad tune too, but its a brilliant song.
Asleep - The Smiths
For my funeral I think the Nirvana cover of "Lake of Fire" :headbang:

:suspect: Very VERY worrying!
Why has no one said John Denver.. Annie's song! Or is that depressing and not sad ?
Eric Clapton-Tears In Heaven
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.
Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?
I'll find my way
Through night and day,
'Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven.
Time can bring you down,
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.
Beyond the door,
There's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more
Tears in heaven.
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.
Or perhaps Radiohead- Street Spirit
Depressing song but still, a moment of genius.....

Yeah his 4 (?) year old son. Fell from a window I think. :( Terrible tragedy, you should listen to the unplugged version.
Greenback 20-01-2005, 08:40 Satisfied Mind - Jeff Buckley. Not his song, but he sings it beautifully.
What about the song from 'Shrek' - Hallelujah.
Forgot who sang it but it's really saddening.

I thought about putting that, but decided it was a bit over-used to have much impact now.
I think the Shrek version was by John Cale, but the popular version used in most films and TV Shows is by Jeff Buckley. It was originally done by Leonard Cohen.
Yodameister 20-01-2005, 10:02 The one's that make me sad are
Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah
Portishead - the 6th track on Dummy (Can't remember the name)
Bruce Springsteen - Point Blank
Johnny Cash - I walk the line
I can't really explain what makes me sad about any of them. I do like all of them though - sometimes you want to feel sad.

I thought it was Rufus Wainwright who did the Hallelujah on the Shrek soundtrack? I prefered Jeff Buckley's cover version though.
Another sad song is Jeff Buckley's cover of Lilac Wine (Nina Simone).
What about Hunters and Collectors - True Tears of Joy.
You see that as a sad song? I find it cheers me up....
I think if you listened to Stairway just after a funeral, you would struggle to cheer up, I would anyway Ian.
neeeeeeeeeek 20-01-2005, 11:22 Porcupine Tree - Stop Swimming..
Just got Goose bumps thinking about it!
LottieWat 20-01-2005, 11:36 I have to nominate the Verve's "Now the drugs Don't Work". When you actually listen to the lyrics, they're so emotive and heartbreaking. Can't listen to the line "just like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown..." without bawling.
That or "Bright Eyes" anyway.

Rufus Wainwright did the version on the soundtrack, but for copyright reasons they had to use John Cale's in the film (could have been the other way round though!)
As for my choices I'd say
No Surprises - Radiohead
Brick - Ben Folds Five
Hurt - Johnny Cash
Carry me away - The Saw Doctors
Always hits the spot for me.

Jimmy Page farting in a biscuit barrel would cheer you up :)
Only joking, I like Zep too.
A few slow blues numbers
I'd Rather Go Blind - Etta James
Man of the World - Fleetwood Mac
Still Got the Blues - Gary Moore
Nothings The Same - Gary Moore
Have you ever loved a woman - Eric Clapton
Yodameister 20-01-2005, 13:33 I think there's a difference bewteen sad songs that make you sad and you find it hard to listen to, and songs that are just quite sad in character but you really enjoy.
I think I enjoy sad songs better than anything else, I don't like unremittingly happy songs if they haven't got a tinge of darkness or sadness in them.
a not necessarily sad song but very depressing indeed is The Logical Song by Supertramp
a rather sad one Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Appart,
also Gary Jule's version of Mad World
and The Cure's Boys Don't Cry
Stairway to Heaven I find to be very cheering
oh, also most Nirvana's songs since Kurt's suicide :(
The cars - Drive is quite a sad song...
Bette Midler - Wind beneath my wings... makes me cry (my own reasons)
Lately - Stevie Wonder (just a sad song)
Remember Me - The Supremes (because I once heard it at a funeral)

carcrash 20-01-2005, 14:44 This always gives me sweaty eyes, the video more so.
Walk in silence,
Don't walk away, in silence.
See the danger,
Always danger,
Endless talking,
Life rebuilding,
Don't walk away.
Walk in silence,
Don't turn away, in silence.
Your confusion,
My illusion,
Worn like a mask of self-hate,
Confronts and then dies.
Don't walk away.
People like you find it easy,
Naked to see,
Walking on air.
Hunting by the rivers,
Through the streets,
Every corner abandoned too soon,
Set down with due care.
Don't walk away in silence,
Don't walk away.
MuteWitness 20-01-2005, 14:44 elton john - last song (bout a boy whos dieing and meets his father for the first time)
the smiths - let me get what i want
The smiths - asleep, someone already mentioned this and it is indeed sad.
Also i find 'Suffer Little Children' off their first album to be just a tad depressing.
pitsmoor 20-01-2005, 22:22 I think Luther Vandross Dance with my Father is a sad song .
There's only one for me which gets me no matter what mood I'm in. It's a B side of a Beautiful South extended single on vinyl. It's called Diamonds or something and it kills me every time.
As you can imagine, I don't play it often, only when I need a good cry or I'm already on my way to having one.
Paint the Sky with Stars by Enya
This song was played at a friend's grandmother's funeral.
:) Sierra
'The Belfast Child' by Simple Minds....Truly sad.
'Waiting for a girl like you' by Foreigner.
'If I had a photograph of you' by A flock of seagulls.
'Nothing compares 2 u' by Sinead O'Connor.
The trouble is most of these 'sad' songs are so good, and so supportive in times of need that they're actually the songs that make you feel the happiest, no?

Of course, the whole point of singing and music is that it is pleasurable. I think the only music that actually makes you sad on its own is bad music.
The only way it makes you sad is if it reminds you of a time when you were sad.
Watched Dom Joly last night and the saddest song in the world was on that.
Changes - Black Sabbath
(The original not the recent cover)
Will Young - Evergreen
Although I think I may have it as first dance when I get married...

Love Tears in Heaven, it brings up a feeling of fragility in me, and reminds me of the fleetines of all things.
Have u heared the new Perfect Circle's version of Imagine? it's much more ambient and brings up quite a lot of emotions..beautifull piece of work I think..
Plain Talker 23-01-2005, 06:18 My list for "Tear-jerking" songs:-
I have to agree that "Drive" by The Cars, is a very poignant song, anyway, as a "standalone" song, but, coupled with the film footage of the starving people in Africa, that they used, back in 1985 for the Video for the Band Aid bash, at Wembley, I can find myself sobbing buckets, at that, no problems.
I love the song "Can't Live" by Nilsson (I hate the mariah carey version)
"Tears in Heaven", by Clapton, yes, definitely, made all the sadder when you know the background to it.
"Daniel" by Elton John..
"Love Will Tear us Apart (Again)" by Joy Division
"The Rose" By Bette Midler. (this was the favourite song of a couple of frinds of mine, who are sadly no longer with us. It was played at the funeral of one of them, and It brought tears to my eyes!)
"Vincent" and "American Pie" by Don Maclean.
"Night shift" I think this one was by the Commodores, it namechecks some of the great soul singers, like Marvin Gaye, and Otis Redding, and Jacky Wilson, who died too soon.
I also love Dr Hook's "More Like The Movies" which contains the lyrics
"well I wish I could have made it
More like the movies for you
But you never got to hear those violins...
Did ya girl?"
I am surprised that no one has mentioned Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You", from the film "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas" (I suppose it's probably because most people associate that song with the "mighty", blockbusting Whitney Houston version, from "the Bodyguard". It's a version which I am not keen on, at all)
The Rod Stewart song, "The Killing of Georgie" is also sad.
"Wind Beneath My Wings", from the Bette Midler film, "Beaches"... yup, pass me the tissues, please!
Two songs that are "supposed" to be sad/ emotive/ poignant / whatever, but in reality, make me want to heave, because of their saccharine-sentiments are "Seasons In The Sun" by Terry Jacks, and "theme from titanic" by 'sea-lion' Dion! (Well, to be honest, I can't abide much at all by Celine, but that's another story, entirely.)
edited, not five minutes after my original posting, because I wanted to add a couple more songs to my list of tear-jerkers:- "Ebony Eyes" and "Cryin' In The Rain" by the Everley Brothers, although, there were lots of "lost love" songs, of that ilk, like "Tell Laura I Love Her" (I won't mention Billy Connolly's spoof on that song) and "Terrry", by Twinkle, and "Leader Of The Pack" by The Shangri-las.
PT
PerlOfWisdom 24-01-2005, 04:46 Boys of summer - Don Henley
What about the Titanic theme song - 'my heart will go on' by Sealion Dion.
Or the Elton John tribute to Diana - 'Candle in the wind'

Oh... I'm sorry about your partner.... :(
I just don't see it as a sad song :o
For me it has to be "In the living years" by Mike and the Mechanics.
When I went to Brownies when I was little, it was one of the few occasions that my dad would pick me up and my mum wouldn't be in the car (because my baby brother would be at home in bed so she would be looking after him).
This meant that my dad could play whatever music he wanted and he often had the Mike and the Mechanics tape on.
I don't think he ever realised that when that song came on I used to be practically weeping in my seat (I was only 8 ).
It's about a father dying and the grown up child regretting not saying certain things and realising the chance has passed them by.
Part of the lyrics go:
"Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It’s too late when we die
To admit we don’t see eye to eye
I wasn’t there that morning
When my father passed away
I didn’t get to tell him
All the things I had to say
I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I’m sure I heard his echo
In my baby’s new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years"
Somehow it really got to me! Thank goodness my dad is alive and very much well, but it has to be one of the saddest songs for me personally.

Know exactly where you're coming from - my nomination is "Everything I Own" by Bread - written by David Gates after the death of his father. It becomes more poignant for me as time passes and my Dad's Alzheimer's Disease takes him further away from me and my children.
well ianmitchell i suppose it wasnt a sad song to him really as he liked it but its sad to us because it reminds us of that occasion.
oh plaintalker what was that sad song by everley brothers
about a little boy who boards a train with no train fare and the driver is just about to throw him off when all the passengers learn that he is on his way to see his dying mother.
so the passengers have a whip round and collect up the train fare.
saaaad.
I think it was originally done in 40s or something.
oh and another sad old one - daddy dont go down the coal mine today.
Some of my picks:
Sigur Ros - Untitled #1 (Vaka):
The first time i saw this was on mtv2's 120minutes, i cried like a baby, great video and great song.
The Knife - N.Y Hotel:
A fantastic song, gives me that feeling in the back of the throat everytime...
Aphex Twin - Avril 14th:
Without a doubt the most beautiful piece of piano there is. Short and sweet.
I'm guessing not many people have heared of these, but Id highly recommend getting your hands on them, and indeed your ears.
Just this past weekend,
went with the family to this very interesting place:
http://www.bodie.net/
Which made me think of a couple more sad songs:
Streets of Laredo by Johnny Cash
http://www.hit-country-music-lyrics.com/johnnycashlyrics-streetsoflaredo.html
This is an old country song. Johnny Cash's version is, IMHO the very best. If you click the link, you can hear Johnny singing.
Also this one, El Paso. By Marty Robbins.
Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl.
Night-time would find me in Rosa's cantina;
Music would play and Felina would whirl.
Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina,
Wicked and evil while casting a spell.
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden;
I was in love but in vain, I could tell.
One night a wild young cowboy came in,
Wild as the West Texas wind.
Dashing and daring,
A drink he was sharing
With wicked Felina,
The girl that I loved.
So in anger I
Challenged his right for the love of this maiden.
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore.
My challenge was answered in less than a heart-beat;
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor.
Just for a moment I stood there in silence,
Shocked by the FOUL EVIL deed I had done.
Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there;
I had but one chance and that was to run.
Out through the back door of Rosa's I ran,
Out where the horses were tied.
I caught a good one.
It looked like it could run.
Up on its back
And away I did ride,
Just as fast as I
Could from the West Texas town of El Paso
Out to the bad-lands of New Mexico.
Back in El Paso my life would be worthless.
Everything's gone in life; nothing is left.
It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden
My love is stronger than my fear of death.
I saddled up and away I did go,
Riding alone in the dark.
Maybe tomorrow
A bullet may find me.
Tonight nothing's worse than this
Pain in my heart.
And at last here I
Am on the hill overlooking El Paso;
I can see Rosa's cantina below.
My love is strong and it pushes me onward.
Down off the hill to Felina I go.
Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys;
Off to my left ride a dozen or more.
Shouting and shooting I can't let them catch me.
I have to make it to Rosa's back door.
Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel
A deep burning pain in my side.
Though I am trying
To stay in the saddle,
I'm getting weary,
Unable to ride.
But my love for
Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen,
Though I am weary I can't stop to rest.
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle.
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest.
From out of nowhere Felina has found me,
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side.
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for,
One little kiss and Felina, good-bye.

Bikertec 28-01-2005, 15:34 I think the ones that I find the sadest for me are Never ever by All Saints and All by myself from the Bridget Jones Film don't know the artist. :(
Oh, another one to add - last one i promise (theres so many good songs out there.... if you know where to look :) )
Chicane - No Ordinary Morning
One of my all time favorite songs everrr, perfect in every respect, the lyrics, the music, everything. a song which, atm, i relate pretttty well to.

What's the saddest song you've ever heard?
:) Sierra
New York Minute - The Eagles.
Ive got quite a few:
Green Day - Good Riddance (the time of your life)
This was played at my best friends funeral, it was one of her favourite songs, every time i hear it now i just burst into tears... wasnt great when it came on in the supermarket last week and im slumped in the isle crying...
Avril Lavigne - Slipped away
Again this reminds me of my best friend, when she was alive her boyfriend labeled us the avril twins as we liked to listen to her music and dress like her to wind up gaz, this song was written about Avrils grandfather dying and i just feel like I can relate to it, its exactly how my feelings are towards Keran, whenever I listen to it i get shivers and just feel like shes here listening to it with me
The last one is
Matchbox Twenty - Leave
Its just a really beautiful song and when im feeling down i tend to stick this on and leave it on repeat, heres the lyrics:
It's amazing
How you make your face just like a wall
How you take your heart and turn it off
How I turn my head and lose it all
It's unnerving
How just one move puts me by myself
There you go just trusting someone else
Now I know I put us both through hell
I'm not saying there wasn't nothing wrong
I just didn't think you'd ever get tired of me
I'm now saying we ever had the right to hold on
I just didn't wanna let it get away from me
But if that's how it's gonna leave
Straight out from underneath
Then we'll see who's sorry now
If that's how it's gonna stand, when
You know you've been depending on
The one you're leaving now
The one you're leaving out
It's aggravating
How you threw me on and you tore me out
How your good intentions turn to doubt
The way you needed time to sort it out
I'm not saying there wasn't nothing wrong
I just didn't think you'd ever get tired of me
I'm now saying we ever had the right to hold on
I just didn't wanna let it get away from me
But if that's how it's gonna leave
Straight out from underneath
Then we'll see who's sorry now
If that's how it's gonna stand, when
You know you've been depending on
The one you're leaving now
The one you're leaving out
The one you're leaving now
The one you're leaving out
I'm not saying there wasn't nothing wrong
I just didn't think you'd ever get tired of me
But if that's how it's gonna leave
Straight out from underneath
Then we'll see who's sorry now
If that's how it's gonna stand, when
You know you've been depending on
The one you're leaving now
The one you're leaving out
Tell me is that how it's going to end
When you know you've been depending on
The one you're leaving now
And the one you're leaving out
The one you're leaving now
The one you're leaving out

Not sure why, but I find Beautiful World by Colin Hay a really sad song. I'm sure it is supposed to be anything but, just has that effect on me though.
Lyrics Here (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/h/hay_colin/beautiful_world_crd.htm)
The one that will have the biggest effect on me is Don't dream it's over by crowded house. It was played at my friends funeral after he lost his fight with a brain tumour. not really a crowded house fan, but the lyrics seemed perfect at the time.
I think 'I fell back alone' by world party is up there as well for me
If we walk through each other
As we leave the room
You don't have to tell me that it's over
Whoever you were then
I never really knew
And you got no need to know me now
CHORUS
You can't see the bottom frome top
You don't see the edge before you drop
And I fell back alone
And I fell back alone
And I fell
Is love trying all the right moves
To stop the walls from coming up
But I can't look over this at all
I'm in some different place
Strangest pictures on my wall
I drew them yesterday
I never thought I'd find the time at all
CHORUS
Forever doesn't mean forever
It just means maybe some other time or place
But how can two souls still eat together
When life has lost its taste
How can we live together
In bed and face to face
And not see anyone at all
It's time to make a wish
And let it float on down the stream
And we can cry a little
For a time that could have been
Many of the songs I'd mention have been mentioned already!
Johnny Cash's version of Hurt - I have been known to burst in to tears in public when hearing this. Last time I did it was when I heard it in Borders bookshop in Leeds. I found a quiet corner by the Oracle manuals and had a good sniffle. It's an incredible powerful song sung by a man who's lived it.
Don Henley - New York Minute, Boys of Summer.
Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years - My father died while we were still estranged. 'Nuff said.
Pink Floyd - Wish you were here.
Crowded House - Don't dream it's over.
Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City, Point Blank, The River
Joe
limpetboy 29-01-2005, 18:45 The only song that's moved me tears is Dry Your Eyes by The Streets, for reasons I won't go in to but it does it every time I hear it.

Good one, Joe!
I don't know how I missed that one. That's even sadder than 'Streets of Laredo'.
Visiting that old ghost town made me think about how hard life must've been for the people there.
In the little cemetary, there are many graves of infants and young children.
It's so very cold there. The elevation is high. Above the tree line. So no trees. In fact, hardly any greenery of any kind. And the wind! It never stopped blowing!
They had none of the amenities were all used to. Oh, little things like hot water and indoor plumbing (and yeah, there's also old outhouses still there as well)
No wonder they all drank!
Another sad song:
Fender Freddie - Before The Next Teardrop Falls
If he brings you happiness,
Then I wish you all the best.
It's your happiness that matters
Most of all.
But if he ever breaks your heart,
If the teardrops ever start,
I'll be there
Before the next teardrop falls.
I'll be there
Anytime you need me
By your side
To dry away
Any teardrops that you cry.
And if he ever leaves you blue,
Just remember - I love you.
And I'll be there
Before the next teardrop falls.
I'll be there
Before the next teardrop falls.
I used to love this song. Played it to death! There was also a spanish version, but I couldn't find it.

Sierra,
Have you ever visited any of the deserted places along the Alaska Highway?
There are the ruins of settlements that were wiped out by such things as measles when the road was built through in the 1940s - the local native American / Canadian population had no immunity to 'western' diseases that came up with teh soldiers and engineers.
You could write an album to break your heart along that road. Very thought provoking trip for me.

No Joe,
I've never been to Alaska. I'd love to go someday. I know people who have visited there, and everyone tells me how beautiful it is.
It is thought provoking to see how people used to live. I don't think us "modern" folks appreciate just how good we have it.
As a child, whenever our family drove over Donner Pass, my father always took that opportunity to point out how lucky we were to be sitting in an air conditioned car. (His mother's people can trace their ancestry to the Breen family) And not out walking in the hundred degree heat.

It still boggles my mind how rough the average person had it. And how bad things still are in some parts of the world. I try not to take things for granted, but when things get hectic it's easy to forget!
Yet another sad song:Tom Dooley
http://dannyman.toldme.com/lyrics/Grateful_Dead/Tom_Dooley.html
The Grateful Dead actually "borrowed" this song from The Kingston Trio. Who probably borrowed it from someone else. In any case, it's a tearjerker.

Lostrider 31-01-2005, 18:20 Streets of London - Ralph Mctell
Have you seen the old man
In the closed down market
Kicking up the papers with his worn out shoes
In his eyes you see no pride
And held loosely at his side
Yesterday's paper, telling yesterday's news.
So how can you tell me you're lonely
And say for you that the sun don't shine
Let me take you by the hand
And lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something
To make you change your mind.
Have you seen the old girl
Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags
She's no time for talking
She just keeps right on walking
Carrying her home in two carrier bags.
So how can you tell me you're lonely
And say for you that the sun don't shine
Let me take you by the hand
And lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something
To make you change your mind.
In the all night cafe at a quarter past eleven
The same old man sitting there on his own
Looking at the world over the rim of his teacup
Each tea lasts an hour, and he wanders home alone.
So how can you tell me that you're lonely
And say for you that the sun don't shine
Let me take you by the hand
And lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something
To make you change your mind.
Have you seen the old man
Outside the seaman's mission
Memory fading with the medal ribbons that he wears
In our winter city the rain cries a little pity
For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care.
So how can you tell me you're lonely
And say for you that the sun don't shine
Let me take you by the hand
And lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something
To make you change your mind.

A similar thing happened in Tasmania after colonising by british settllers:
"Remains of last Tasmanian Aborigine to be put to rest.
She was the tragic sole survivor of the "Black War", the last full-blooded Aborigine in Tasmania after British settlers systematically rounded up the island's indigenous population. When she died, to the despair of her mixed race relatives, Truganini's body was exhumed and plundered by scientists and souvenir hunters.
Now pieces of Truganini's hair and skin can be returned to Australia for a ceremonial burial after the Royal College of Surgeons of England handed Aboriginal remains to a delegation from Tasmania.
It only emerged that the Royal College of Surgeon's museum in Oxford held pieces of Truganini in January when Rodney Dillon, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission's Tasmanian representative, met officials.
"I nearly fell on the floor. I couldn't speak - my tongue swelled up," said Mr Dillon yesterday. "We feel very close to Truganini because we have talked about her all our lives, we've grown up with her."
Truganini has long been seen as the last of the Tasmanian Aborigines, a symbol of how the Aborigines were persecuted and dispossessed at the hands of white settlers, particularly in lawless Tasmania. Born in the early 19th century, by the time she was 17 her mother, sisters, uncle and boyfriend had been murdered.
The colonial government offered a bounty for the capture of Aborigines in Tasmania, leading to the Black War. By the 1830s there were only about 200 Tasmanian Aborigines remaining from the original 4,000 or 5,000 - thousands had been killed by settlers or wiped out by the diseases brought from Europe.
Truganini was believed to have led resistance to white settlement but was later used as a pawn by the colonial authorities in the 1830s to persuade those Aborigines left alive after the Black War to give themselves up for placement in settlements.
She survived the harsh life in the concentration camp style settlements and gained iconic status. But when she died in 1876 her final wishes were defied and her body was exhumed by scientists curious to examine the last "full-blooded" Aborigine. Most of her remains were displayed in the Tasmanian Museum in Hobart"

XxGemmaxX 31-01-2005, 20:26 The saddest song i've ever heard is definatly In the living years by Mike and the mechanics. That sing reminds me so much of my granddad who i sadly lost when i was just 6 years old. I miss him dearly and that song speaks the words that i want to say. It's almost ten years ago since he died and i wish each day that i could see him again so that he could see how much ive grown and how well i'm doing in my life. I often think how great it would b if i could just see him for one more day, i think of all the things i would say to him and how i would react. I also think that Always by Bon - Jovi, Because u loved me by celene dion, angels by robbie, i'll be missing u by Puff daddy and tears in heaven are sad songs also.
1. You werent 6, you were 5, i was 6. And
2. I dont think everyone else wants to know what you'd do if a loved one came back from the dead, cos you went a bit off topic with that. :D
(Im her brother btw)
As for my saddest song, it has to be Starcrossed by Ash.

The little girl she said to me
What are these things that I can see
Each night when I come home from school
And mama calls me in for tea
Oh every night a baby dies
And every night a mama cries
What makes those men do what they do
To make that person black and blue
Grandpa says their happy now
They sit with God in paradise
With angels' wings and still somehow
It makes me feel like ice
Tell me there's a heaven
Tell me that it's true
Tell me there's a reason
Why I'm seeing what I do
Tell me there's a heaven
Where all those people go
Tell me they're all happy now
Papa tell me that it's so

So do I tell her that it's true
That there's a place for me and you
Where hungry children smile and say
We wouldn't have no other way
That every painful crack of bones
Is a step along the way
Every wrong done is a game plan
To that great and joyful day
And I'm looking at the father and the son
And I'm looking at the mother and the daughter
And I'm watching them in tears of pain
And I'm watching them suffer
Don't tell that little girl
Tell me
Tell me there's a heaven
Tell me that it's true
Tell me there's a reason
Why I'm seeing what I do
Tell me there's a heaven
Where all those people go
Tell me they're all happy now

Yes, it's that great leap to G# that does it for me (from its home key of E). Then in the chorus it goes up to C#m, to F#m and B. Thought I'd share that with you, C#m being the minor sixth of E. Loads and loads of songs have used these chords but none sound as sad, deathly, morbid, end-of-the-world sad as Without You.
Is this because both song writers went on to commit suicide? Was the emotion in the song almost a portent of things to come? Badfinger's version is sparse compared to Harry Nilson's and isn't as dramatic.
It's an achingly beautiful song. It's timeless and will never be bettered. It's haunting, the opening piano with its acoustic echo, the voice - Nilson's - that sounds so hurt, empty and alone.
Mo, your choice is spot on. This is what I call music. It hits you right there, time and again. I'm off to cry now.

There's an old Irish song (at least I think it was Irish) I remember playing when I was a kid visiting my aunty, it was a 45, you'll have to excuse my spelling here I think it was called latchaco and meant thief (I think) it went something like this........
*think country type tune*
My brother he's a latchaco (sp) and even though he's my twin
everywhere I go I find he's already been...
or something similar.
It tells the tale of a bloke who's brother is a "wrong 'un" and keeps doing things that the bloke got blamed for.
Not a sad song so probaly the wrong thread for it, but reading the thread made me think about it.
Ok ok I'll get me coat lol

Mike and the Mechanics "The Living Years"
Elton John "Candle in the Wind" for Princess Diana
P Diddy "I'll be missing u"

I would include Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah", but I don't find it sad? Just incredibly, hauntingly beautiful. And totally hypnotic - I've been playing it over and over again since I first heard it - and just can't get it out of my head!
Although thinking through my choices, I'm surprised at how the saddest songs seem to be also the most beautiful.....

I quite agree. I love Billie Holiday. Although I have to be in the right mood to listen to her music. It's that moving. Strange Fruit refers to the lynching of young black men in the South...something Ms. Holiday witnessed personally during her lifetime.
Strange Fruit
Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.
Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.
Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

For me, it's Ebony Eyes. The song is so sad that it verges on the disgusting!
on a weekend pass
I wouldn't have had time,
to get home and marry that baby of mine,
so I went to the chaplin and he authorized,
me to send for my ebony eyes.
My ebony eyes was coming to me,
from out of the skies,
on flght 1203,
in an hour or two,
I would whiser I do,
to my beautiful ebony eyes.
(spoken)
well, the plane was way overdue,
so I went inside to the airlines desk
and I said,
Sir I wonder why 1203 is so late?
he said oh they probably took off late,
or they may have ran into some trubulant weather
and had to alter their course.
I went back outside and waited at the gate,
and I watched the beacon light from the control tower, as it whipped through the dark eblny sky as if it was seaching for her.
then came the annoncement over the loud speaker
would thoes having realitives and friends on flight 1203
please report to the chaplin across the street at once.
then I felt a burning great deep inside
and I knew the ebony, heavenly skies,
has taken my lifes most wonderful prize
my beautiful ebony eyes.
If I ever get,
to heaven,I'll bet,
the first thing that i'll recognise,
she'll smile at me,
and I know she will be,
my beautiful ebony eyes.
NO LAUGHING, but I think the Will Young song 'Leave right Now' is extremely poignant.

(Apologies to the thread starter, whoever it was....seems so long ago now that I've forgotten!)
DanSumption 16-07-2005, 04:52 Any of the songs in the film The Saddest Music in the World (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0366996/combined) ought to do it. (Great film BTW, very funny. Best quote: "If you're sad, and like beer, I'm your lady" from beer baroness lady port-Huntley).
But genuinely, probably "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. in fact, pretty much any song off his album American IV. His cover of the Beatles "In My Life" is heartrending, one I would choose for my funeral.
The other piece of music (not a song) which always brings tears to my eyes, although tears of both happiness and sadness, is Debussy's piano piece Clair de Lune. It's very short and yet it seems to encompass an entire lifetime of emotional ups and downs, it is one of the most perfect pieces of music that I know of. (They recently used an orchestral version of Clair de Lune for the big Chanel advert starring Nicole Kidman; it wasn't as moving as the piano piece, but still pretty good).
DanSumption 16-07-2005, 05:09 Seen some other great ones on this thread: Sinead O'Connor, Radiohead, The Verve. Also, there's quite a few Pink Floyd songs which could go on here, especially off The Wall and The Final Cut.
But I'm surprised nobody has mentioned "Country Death Song" by the Violent Femmes. That one brings a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes every time. "You wanna know how to take a short trip to hell? ...Just take your lovely daughter and throw her in a well." Brrr!
I had me a wife, I had me some daughters.
I tried so hard, I never knew still waters.
Nothing to eat and nothing to drink.
Nothing for a man to do but sit around and think.
Nothing for a man to do but sit around and think.
Well, I’m a thinkin’ and thinkin’, till there’s nothin’ I ain’t thunk.
Breathing in the stink, till finally I stunk.
It was at that time, I swear I lost my mind.
I started making plans to kill my own kind.
I started making plans to kill my own kind.
Come little daughter, I said to the youngest one,
Put your coat on, we’ll have some fun.
We’ll go out to mountains, the one to explore.
Her face then lit up, I was standing by the door.
Her face then lit up, I was standing by the door.
Come little daughter, I will carry the lanterns.
We’ll go out tonight, we’ll go to the caverns.
We’ll go out tonight, we’ll go to the caves.
Kiss your mother goodnight and remember that God saves.
Kiss your mother goodnight and remember that God saves.
A led her to a hole, a deep black well.
I said make a wish, make sure and not tell and
Close you’re eyes dear, and count to seven.
You know your papa loves you, good children go to heaven.
You know your papa loves you, good children go to heaven.
I gave her a push, I gave her a shove.
I pushed with all my might, I pushed with all my love.
I through my child into a bottomless pit.
She was screaming as she fell, but I never heard her hit.
She was screaming as she fell, but I never heard her hit.
Gather round boys to this tale that I tell.
You wanna know how to take a short trip to hell?
It’s guaranteed to get your own place in hell.
Just take your lovely daughter and push her in the well.
Take your lovely daughter and throw her in the well.
Don’t speak to me of lovers, with a broken heart.
You wanna know what can really tear you apart?
I’m going out to the barn, will I never stop in pain?
I’m going out to the barn, to hang myself in shame.

Ousetunes 16-07-2005, 14:10 In a lonely room, in a lonely corner, I sit on my lonely own
I sit & twiddle my thumbs, it ain't fun when I think of the hate you have shown
It could have all been so different with all the love I could have shared
But things in my head & the things you had said proved to me that you didn't care
As the light fades away & the shadows are cast
As this room turns as cold as my heart
And all that we could have done in the past
If only we'd made the right start
Dream, dream, I'll dream tonight & you'll be in my vision
I'm sitting & waiting & thinking of dids when I should be thinking of didn'ts
It's getting dark now as I sit here alone, I sit on my lonely own
Maybe tomorrow I'll try again, by then I might have gone
It's no good feeling one's own pain - inflicted by myself
Yes tomorrow I'll try again unless I top myself
As the rain starts again & the tears they will fall
As I shake at the sadness of it all
Why oh why do I go on, why oh why should I care?
And I'm sat in the dark as my crying makes echoes
I hear myself (stupid), my crying should know
That I'll dream tonight and you'll be there
In a perfect world you would care
But not now as I sit in a lonely corner
Actually I'm laid on the floor
Should I awake tomorrow morning
I'll return to my sorrow once more

Ousetunes 16-07-2005, 14:27 A Whiter Shade Of Pale by Procul Harem.
Having arrived home from our family holidays in 1976 which we'd spent at Cala Masqueda (sp?) in Spain, I suddenly found myself laying on my bed and humming this song which had played every day in the beach cafe. It reduced me to tears and I assumed, as any 7 year old would, that it was the fact that it reminded me of my holidays that upset me (coming home and starting a new year at school and so on).
As I've grown up I've come to a strange reasoning as to why this song still tugs away at the old heart-strings.
Before I was born I had a sister who was taken away tragically, aged two and a half years in 1967. The Guinness Book of Hit Singles shows that this very song was in the charts at this time (at number 1 IIRC).
Are the feelings of tragedy and sadness which I sense when I hear this song an echo of the angst, horror and enormous loss my mum will have felt around this time. Did they lay within her, only to be passed onto me when I was conceived?
A spooky thought which, whilst not being sure I should be airing and sharing on here, nontheless your opinions would be welcome.
lucyjuicy 16-07-2005, 14:30 so wat else do you like?
doublewood 16-07-2005, 18:17 I agree with deejay annie's is depressing boring etc,but as for sad, All Woman by lisa stansfield especially if you watch the vid that goes with it:cry:
Check out these lyrics, the song is very theatrical sounding. It's called: 'Little Susie' (http://www.lyrics-domain.com/Little_Susie_Lyrics.html)
A very dark, disturbing song.
You fill up my senses
Like a gallon of Magnet
Like a packet of Woodbine
Like a good pinch of snuff
Like a night out in Sheffield
Like a greasy chip butty
Like Sheffield United
Come thrill me again....
Na Na Na Na Na Na oooooooooooooo
very, very, sad song............:hihi: :heyhey:

absynthfairy 16-07-2005, 19:51 For me -
Radioheads OK computer is a work of genius and has got me through some very dark times.
Others -
Goodbye - Natalie Imbruglia
Wires - Athlete
All I Want Is You - U2
Running to Stand Still - U2 (my funeral song)
Come What May - Nicole Kidman & Ewan McGregor
I think whats good about them is they are real - they remind you of real feelings that you wish you could have expressed half so well at the time.
lucyjuicy 17-07-2005, 10:15 switch is solid
metalman 19-07-2005, 20:25 There can't be many more depressing (yet utterly brilliant) albums than Abyssinians by folk singer June Tabor. Her mournful doom-laden delivery coupled with the lyrical subject matter makes you want to reach for the carving knife and start sawing at your wrist. Most of her other albums are not recommended for the terminally depressed either.
ed9morelies 20-07-2005, 11:52 Can't read all of this thread, but in case it's not come up...

Yup, it's been mentioned a few times, and you're right: it is by far the saddest song of all time ("In My Life" from the same album, originally by the Beatles, probably comes 2nd), and the video has me in tears.
KookyKoo 20-07-2005, 12:14 I'd have to say "Spark" by Tori Amos. Or "Last Dance" by Sarah McLachlan- it's a really haunting instrumental piece, sad anyways but makes me feel even sadder since my sister said it's what she'd want played at her funeral :(
I'd also agree with whoever posted "tears in heaven"
Tell Laura I love Her - I think it was by Ricky Valence who sang it but not sure....
When I was a wee girl I used to cry when this was played at my Auntie's house who is a big 60's music buff. He died..... it was so sad....
Warning Sign - Coldplay. Makes me cry. Dunno why.
This Woman's work - Kate Bush.
"I should be crying
But I just can't let it show
I should be hoping
But I can't stop thinking
All the things I should've said
That I never said
All the things we should of done
That we never did
All the things I should've given
But I didn't "
In fact most of her stuff gets me...
BruciesBabe 20-07-2005, 15:08 Sad songs aye.. right then..
Goodbye my lover - James Blunt. This guy has really been burned by someone in the past, the whole album is sad.

The Living Years - Mike and the Mechanics
sugarnspice 27-07-2005, 09:16 God Only Knows by The Beach Boys makes me cry. :(
MovingOn 20-08-2005, 15:35 Streets of Heaven by Sherrie Austin - it's a really emotional piece about a child dying in hospital.
Hello God, it's me again, 2.00 am, room 304
Visiting hours are over, time for our bedside tug of war
The sleeping child between us may not make it through the night
I'm fighting back the tears as she fights for her life.
Well it must be kind of crowded on the streets of heaven
So tell me, what do you need her for
Don't you know one day she'll be your little girl forever
But right now, I need her so much more
She's much too young to be all alone
Barely just turned seven
So who will hold her hand as she crosses the streets of heaven?
Tell me God, do you remember the wishes that she made
As she blew out the candles on her last birthday cake
She wants to ride a pony when she's big enough
She wants to marry her daddy when she's all grown up
And it must be kind of crowded on the streets of heaven
So tell me what do you need her for
Don't you know one day she'll be your little girl forever
But right now I need her so much more
She's much too young to be all alone
Barely just turned seven
So who will hold her hand when she crosses the streets of heaven?
Don't you know, she's my angel you have plenty of your own
And I know you hold a place for her but she already has a home
Well I don't know if you're listening, but praying's all I've left to do
So I ask you Lord, have mercy, you lost a son once too
And it must be kind of crowded on the streets of heaven
So tell me what do you need her for
Don't you know one day she'll be your little girl forever
But right now I need her so much more.
Lord I know once you've made up your mind
There ain't no use in beggin
So if you take her with you today
Will you make sure she looks both ways
Will you hold her hand as she crosses the streets of heaven?
The streets of heaven
Anyone who's had a child in hospital and been given a 50/50 chance of survival would be touched.
Babooshka 21-08-2005, 14:24 'Can't make you love me'..Bonnie Raitt...Christ...makes me sob buckets whenever I hear it. Think it was covered by George Michael not too long ago.
Just bumping this thread cuz i happened to listen to a certain song tonight for some reason and it's truly brilliant - very sad. It's by Wu Tang Clan and called 'never again' and is about the Holocaust. A must have in any collection in my opinion, lyrically and musically excellent and a haunting ending.
I'll second 'This Woman's Work' by Kate Bush.
Another one is 'The Drugs Don't Work' by The Verve. That's one hell of a depressing song.
Bellacboy 11-02-2006, 00:28 Tom Waits - Anywhere I lay my head (from Rain Dogs)
One of the few songs that sends a shiver down my spine.
Or the live acoustic version of Redemption song sung by Bob Marley at his last ever gig. Everyone, including his band were in tears because they knew he was going to die soon.
daverity 11-02-2006, 01:10 Just looked through this thread, before I posted and couldn't find what I honestly think is one of the saddest songs that has ever been written.....Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles.
It just epitomises what many old people endure, not a life but an existence and when they die they are remembered by nobody...an incredibly sad song but equally, incredibly true.
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from ?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong ?
Father McKenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near.
Look at him working. Darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care?
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?
Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?
bjshooter 11-02-2006, 01:55 I have to nominate the Verve's "Now the drugs Don't Work". When you actually listen to the lyrics, they're so emotive and heartbreaking. Can't listen to the line "just like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown..." without bawling.
Yep this gets me too, also Puff daddys i'll be missing you played at my mums funeral, and the sinad o'connor one, forgot name, but very sad.:(
simplyangel1 13-02-2006, 03:30 sting - fields of gold
is really sad it always reminds of that someone has died.
they used to use it on the cancer adverts where the people would look in the mirror and they would have someone beside them and then they look round and they disappear. don't like those adverts they upset me :(
the streets - dry your eyes mate
only reason that upsets me is because when my bf broke up with me, he told me to listen to the song because he said that was how we are now :(
DJ Sammy - heaven (piano version)
makes me cry because my friend showed me an online animated video which was called "i miss my daddy" which is about a little girl praying to her dead dad saying how hard life is without him. just thinking about it is making me want to cry. :(
Lustral - i still love you
beautiful ambient dance tune
Areosmith - i don't wanna miss a thing
Meatloaf - two out of three ain't bad
for got to add the song i find the saddest is
Guns 'n' Roses - November Rain
bensonhedges 13-02-2006, 07:26 For me it's "I can't live, if living is without you" by Nilson. Reminds me of a friend who was killed in a car crash with all of her family when we were both 14. I'm filling up just typing this.
Beetlebum 13-02-2006, 18:21 Carole King - So Far Away
Cindy Lauper - True Colours
Sade - By Your Side
Soul Asylum - Runaway Train
Terrence Trent D'Arby - Let Her Down Easy
And I've always had a soft spot for Art Garfunkels Bright Eyes (reminds me of watership down)
But I think saddest song IMO is Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again (Naturally)
cobaltblue 13-02-2006, 21:49 Soul Asylum - Runaway Train
I love that tune .......
Runaway train, never going back
Wrong way on a one-way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here nor there
Bought a ticket for a runaway train
Like a madman laughing at the rain
A little out of touch, a little insane
It's just easier than dealing with the pain
Also love Proclaimers - Act of Rembrance
Arms of steel, hair of gold
Royal blue eyes, with a rebel soul
You scared me, you still do
But I loved you
More than you ever knew

Mine has to be
promise to Try by Madonna
Little girl don't you forget her face
Laughing away your tears
When she was the one who felt all the pain
Little girl never forget her eyes
Keep them alive inside
I promise to try -- it's not the same
Keep your head held high -- ride like the wind
Never look behind, life isn't fair
That's what you said, so I try not to care
Little girl don't run away so fast
I think you forgot to kiss -- kiss her goodbye
Will she see me cry when I stumble and fall
Does she hear my voice in the night when I call
Wipe away all your tears, it's gonna be all right
I fought to be so strong, I guess you knew
I was afraid you'd go away, too
Little girl you've got to forget the past
And learn to forgive me
I promise to try -- but it feels like a lie
Don't let memory play games with your mind
She's a faded smile frozen in time
I'm still hanging on -- but I'm doing it wrong
Can't kiss her goodbye -- but I promise to try
Played it at my mums funeral last year, its all about her mum dying and the things she used to do, everytime i here that now i fill up.

Elegy for Charlotte - Autumn in New York soundtrack
Wish you were here - Pink Floyd....especially if the love your life is in another country.
Just like Heaven - The Cure (personal reasons)
Most of the 'The Mission' sound track by Ennio Morricone, especially Miserere, sang by the young boy.
History - The Verve
Never is a Long Time - Roxette
And I agree with the Bright Eyes thing. Ulp....
FairyNormal 17-02-2006, 10:17 Caroline says, originally by Lou Reed. I have an excellent cover version done my Marc Almon from the Untitled album. Sends shivers down my spine and tears to my eyes.
Caroline says
As she gets up off the floor
Why is it that you beat me
It isn't any fun
Caroline says
As she makes up her eyes
You ought to learn more about yourself
Think more than just i
But she's not afraid to die
All her friends call her "alaska"
When she takes speed, they laugh and ask her
What is in her mind
What is in her mind
Caroline says
As she gets up from the floor
You can hit me all you want to
But i don't love you anymore
Caroline says
While biting her lip
Life is meant to be more than this
And this is a bum trip
But she's not afraid to die
All her friends call her "alaska"
When she takes speed, they laugh and ask her
What is in her mind
What is in her mind
She put her fist through the window pane
It was such a funny feeling
It's so cold in alaska
It's so cold in alaska
It's so cold in alaska
Other sad songs for me are:
R.E.M ....Evrybody hurts
Pretenders ... Hymn to her ........ Had this played at my best mates funeral a couple of years ago. Seemed so appropriate.
EdnaKrabappe 17-02-2006, 11:16 Sad songs vary - some are sad because of lyrics some are because of when you heard them (note most of mine are from when i was a hormonal teenager)
Goodbye to love The Carpenters - Karen has such a sad lamenting voice
Dancing with tears in our eyes Ultravox (it was the hysteria of nuclear attack combined with being a hormonal teenager)
Don't let the teardrops rust your shining heart Everything but the girl
Luka Suzanne Vega
Nilsson Without you
Don't dream it's over Crowded house
Leave right now Will Young
Sometimes when we touch Dan Hill (a sad childhood memory)
Bright eyes Art Garfunkel
Old Shep Elvis (anything to do with animals and I'm off weeping like no tomorrow)
alirosdan 13-04-2006, 21:28 [QUOTE=IanMitchell]Eric Clapton-Tears In Heaven
Couldn't agree more. We went to the Arena to see Eric Clapton and he sang this song. The lights went down, and he sat in the middle of the stage with his guitar and just one spotlight on him. There wasn't a dry eye in the place. Can't listen to it to this day without crying!
the_mandarin 13-04-2006, 21:35 "Don't Speak" by NO DOUBT
"My young man" by Barnsley singer/songwriter Kate Rusby. It relates the tale of an elderly woman nursing her man who is dying of some mining related disease - "Oh, man and wife we used to be, now he's like a child upon my knee..." - and then later " and if he must go, let your best Angels keep him well"
It's a haunting tune and Kate's voice sends shivers down my spine. The fact that they've had such a happy long life together makes it all the more poignant - "A young girl no more am I, I will not weep and I will not cry, my young man needs me still...If someones watching up above, you can see how much my dear I love...I need him now and always will."
sheffdan 14-04-2006, 10:22 Is the the one he wrote when his little boy was killed?
For me it's; Bridge Over Troubled Water and Nights In White Satin. :(
Yeah how tragic was that! :( fell out of a skycraper window.......devastating to say the least.
Hi,
I reckon "ha ha said the clown"
its a boppy sad song
Most sad song is definitely Hurt by Johny Cash but the version is from Nine Inch Nails. BTW depressive songs make me feel great.
Others might not been mentioned here: Bush : Out of this world.
Temple of dog: Call me a dog
Tool: Schism
Tool: message to Harry Manback (not a song)
Nick Cave: Weeping Song
And many more
HURT:
I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feelings disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way
fozzybronze 25-04-2006, 21:05 Portishead - the 6th track on Dummy (Can't remember the name)
That's Numb, but surely you mean the 7th "Roads".
The saddest song of all time is Gavin Bryars: "Jesus Blood Never Failed me Yet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus%27_Blood_Never_Failed_Me_Yet)", its just a loop of an old tramp singing to himself...but bugger me its moving!
Although at my own funeral it would be Green Day: "Good Riddance", as someone mentioned earlier.
Of all recent songs, I'd definitely go for Streets: "Dry Your Eyes"
scarey girl 25-04-2006, 21:41 Depends on my mood and why I am sad.
Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me The Smiths
And then many songs by Chris Isaak such as Wicked Game
But the sadest piece of music for me is Barber's Adagio for Strings, which is perhaps not quite what this thread is about, but it always gets me.

For personal reasons...
shells2909 25-04-2006, 21:45 Some favourite sad songs of mine are
INXS - Never Tear us Apart
Green Day - Wake me up when September ends
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Maximo Park - Acrobat
Chicago - Hard habit to break
Dobie Gray - Drift away
Bon Jovi - Never say goodbye
sufc_tom 25-04-2006, 22:18 Some off my ipod:
Jimmy Ruffin - What becomes of the broken hearted
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Aerosmith - Don't wanna miss a thing (extremely underrated)
Frank Sinatra - My Way (was played at a funeral I went to last month)
Joe Cocker - Up Where We Belong
Bon jovi - Always
Phil Collins - Against all odds
U2 - With or without you
mr craig 25-04-2006, 22:55 You - Evanesence
Gets me everytime, and i hate near enough every other song by this band.
surfinjim 26-04-2006, 01:32 Lose the faith - McAlmont ( As in David McAlmont from McAlmont and Butler).
Found this solo album a couple of months ago and has me and the wife in tears every time. Sad but beautiful. It's already on the list for when we decide to renew our wedding vows.
Funeral songs don't always have to be sad..... there has been a thread about this somewhere. I'm going with Fanfare for the Common Man and the theme from Match of the Day!!!!
