View Full Version : Short Daytime walk Tuesday 23rd October

It's been my intention for a while to try and arrange a couple of midweek walks a month on a regular basis. What I have in mind are shortish walks of maybe 4-6 miles starting at fairly central locations, with a call at either a pub or a cafe at the end of the walk :) The type of places I have in mind are Porter Valley, Rivelin Valley, The 5 Weirs walk, Woolley Woods and Loxley Valley.
Some time back there were a number of people asking for such walks to take place but they never got off the ground. So if these people still look on the walking threads and are still interested, nows your chance!
I am particularly interested in trying to attract people who for some reason cannot get at weekends, or perhaps don't come on the weekend walks because they don't want to give the whole of their day up.
Some other people who have been in touch are parents with schoolchildren who need to see their kids off to school and be back home for them later. So for this reason I think it would be a good idea to start the walks fairly early, at say 10.0 at the latest, and to finish by 2.0-2.30 pm.
To start the ball rolling, (and hopefully I'll not be the only one to turn up for the first one), I'm going to suggest a walk up the Porter Valley for Tuesday 23rd, meeting at the statue at the entrance to Endcliffe Park at 10.0.
Do I have any takers to join me, my rucksack and flask?

If you travel to the roundabout at Hunters Bar/Ecclesall Road, Willman, the main entrance to the park is there. The statue is right in front of the gates.

Well, looks like 5 at least, which is 4 more than I thought there'd be.
And Wilman...........it's about time! Bet youre Albert really using a different nick lol.
Parkwoman, I was going to suggest to people that if they have any holiday days to use up at work, then how about using the odd one to go walking, and there you are doing just that! Guess there'll be no Rob tho?

I hope I'll be well enough to do this one (or at least the first part of it, before turning back, which I know will be possible with this walk).

Is everyone OK with be bringing the Molly monster with me? I promise that she's starting to learn some manners.

Dog-friendly, Child-friendly, Alcoholics-friendly :P, even Mod-friendly this Walking Group Medusa.
Come on down, as you say it's a great walk to be able to do as much or as little as you want.

No, just me this time 'cos guess what - the unmentionable footy club have a Euro home match on Tues

Oh bum!

Would it be o.k. to bring my Tues morning class and tell them its nature study? :| that would make another 30!
Would appreciate a Thurs walk as I don,t work on Thursdays-well just housework type stuff, which I'll be more than happy to avoid! And I have the Government's backing-they're always going on about how we all need to get more active!
Depending on how his poorly foot is-Mr Linchpin might be up for this as he's got a week off next week-and maybe even Linchpin jnr.!
Oh, I'm jealous now.:shakes:

If I do end up going it would be really nice for me and Oz to see Molly, they got on well when they met. :)

I could come out with a crass remark like I don't care whether anybody turns up or not, I'll walk on my own if necessary but you know I don't mean it, so I'll just ignore your first sentence and answer the second!
I haven't got a clue! There, a statement you've always known anyway. Your leader has no clue!
It all depends what the people who turn up want to do. I have advertised it as a short walk, so if anybody turns up expecting that to be the case, then I reckon we'll be back for 1 at the latest.
If the ones that turn up all want to go for a longer walk, then it might be 3 o clock. What do you want to do Jess?
Oh, and don't expect a reply from me till Monday cos I'm away for the weekend in 20 mins :)

W.O.R.K.Ltd. a garden centre and sheltered workshop for those with learning disabilities is situated on Ringinglow Road, behind Bents Green School opposite the former Fire Station. It is open all day for refreshments or meals at lunch time, I think meals need to be booked on Tel 0114 2620094.

I can not come on the walk because of my foot but (W)orthwhile (O)ccupations & (R)ecreational (K)rafts is well worth a visit during the week day. You will see first hand, What can be done by those who have learning disabilities.

On the left hand-side, opposite the entrance to WORK and outside the old pavilion is a long concrete strip where sometimes cars park.

A Mr Les Etches who lives near me and myself did that in October, 1998. My donation to WORK.Ltd. Les used his skills and knowledge. I was the laborer and financier of part of it.

Never mind Jess, just clear your diary for next Thursday if you can, I'm off that day and it seems like the "old lady" will be suited then too :)

A grand walk with 6 people in total turning up to enjoy a remarkably `people-free` Endcliffe Woods.
Nice to meet Willman and Me-and-Pippo for the 1st time, glad you could both make it and hopefully I'll see you again soon. Oh and cheers for the advice re the Chesterfield canal walk Willman, I'm going to do what you suggested.

An enjoyable walk. I can highly recommend the Horlick's from the cafe at Forge Dam.....mmmmmmm :)

It was nice to meet Willman (thanks for the Skittles!) and me-and-pippo and to catch up with Medusa again.

I'm glad that Saul and I went on and walked the longer route round - we made a day of it and had a great time. See Saul's photos here. (http://picasaweb.google.com/saulmcintyre/Portervalley) Mine will follow, once the films are developed. :)
