Does anyone have a Mirena coil? Had one or know of anyone that has?

It has been suggested i have one, but i am not too sure. I know it is one of the new generation coils with hormones and have had a look at the FPA site here (http://www.fpa.org.uk/guide/contracep/ius.htm) . I also know of 2 friends that have fallen preganant with coils (though not this one) over the last year so am a bit dubious as well. Any advice/experiences welcome.

I knew someone who owned a puff adder once - is that any good? I'm not sure it can get you pregnant though - i think it may be to do with genetics - but i'll check it out:|

My wife has one of these, and says its fantastic.Never had any problems,it doesn't need changing for 5yrs.She says if she had known how good it was she would have gone for it much sooner than she did.Oh, and it was on the recommendation of a friend who was also very happy with it, that she decided to give it a go.Hope this helps you in your decision.

I've just checked with a scientist friend - apparently little dogs can get big dogs preggers -but little monkey people can't get big monkey people preggers - but he said he's sure a coil snake can't get a human woman pregant - and he says he wouldnt try as it might be a bit dangerous.

i hope this was the advice you were looking for:)

For those who didn't know what a Mirena was (including me) - http://www.mirena-us.com/

Q. What is Mirena?
A. Mirena® (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system) is a unique form of long-acting birth control that virtually eliminates the worry of unplanned pregnancy.
Small, T-shaped frame is made of soft, flexible plastic about the size of a quarter
Placed in your uterus by your healthcare provider during a routine office visit
Continuously releases a very small amount of levonorgestrel (a hormone commonly found in some birth control pills)
Prevents pregnancy for up to 5 years or until removed

Q. How does Mirena work?
A. There is no single explanation of how Mirena works.

Mirena may:
Block sperm from reaching or fertilizing your egg
Make the lining of your uterus thin
Stop the release of your egg from your ovary, but this is not the way it works in most cases
We do not know which of these actions is most important for preventing pregnancy and most likely all of them work together.

Q. Is Mirena safe and effective?
A. Over the past 14 years, Mirena has been used successfully by more than 7 million women worldwide. It is 99.9% effective and has been approved by the FDA for use in the U.S. since 2001. As a result of their personal experiences, 9 out of 10 women who use Mirena recommend it to their friends.

I would imagine that the only drawback will be parallel to the implants difficulty - as they reach the end of their useful life, the efficacy tails off, resulting in unpexted pregnancy. However this is obviated by proper patient counselling.

stay on topic please, cheers
