Does anyone practice a form of self defence i.e karate, judo etc...
And what would happen if someone came up to you and wanted to mug you and you punch them in the face and break their nose or snap their arm? will you be charged with assault? the problem is that a martial art can become part of your instinct and you dont think about what will happen before you act, only after

The martial art went out of the window - other than it allowed me to stay calm and think my way through the problem.
Holding a prat by the pony tail with his face just above your knee and yelling at his 3 mates to leave your boyfriend alone is not, to the best of my knowledge, a move taught in any martial arts school.

I don't have time mate - I'm still perfecting Marital Arts...
I take my 11 y/o boy to Taekwondo lessons though & he loves it.
He's nearly a red-belt & I'm so proud of him.

first of all, self defence and any martial art are very different skills, although with some obvious overlap.
You are entitled to defend yourself, if you use excessive force then you will most likely be prosecuted. It's up to you to show that it wasn't really excessive in court.
Still, the old adage of judged by 12 or carried by 6 can be applied.
I'd say that if you aren't acting by instict (when actually invovled in the fight, not being threatened) then you've not learnt your art very well. If you have to think about what to do, you are mostly likely about to get a pasting.
And finally, if someone asks for your wallet (especially if they are armed) the best self defence is to give it to them. Not much chance of being hurt then.

Depends if one was caught for said injury on mugger!
Personally I'd have no problem smiling in court while I was on an assault charge for leathering some would be street robber and defending my actions.
At the end of the day they're trying to rob you - give em some knuckle!
I have practiced several Martial Arts in the past and I thoroughly recommend them for overall fitness and a form of self defence.
I have tried a few styles in my lifretime, but always give up.
I undestand some of the traditional principles of meditation, honour, discipline...
Either I am just lazy, a hippy, or just don`t like hitting people to learn how not to hit people.

I tend to duck when my wife throws things at me.
