TheRedWizard 15-10-2007, 22:25 Hi,
There is a specialist Polish shop here on London Road, past Wasabi Sabi, on the right hand side (coming out of town) as it becomes Abbeydale Road.
A friend of mine, who lived in Poland for many years, popped in a few weeks back. I forget the wording exactly, but the sign says 'Continental Shop' in English but in Polish: 'Yes, it really is a Polish shop!'
I've noticed Morrisons supermarket in Ecclesfield have started to stock a range of Polish food, so I'd have a look in some of the bigger supermarkets, in case they do, too.
Good luck.

I think stuffed cabbage is a popular Polish meal, also I love the Polish blue and white pottery:love:
pattricia 15-10-2007, 22:49 Ive always liked Polish food especially the pickled cumbers in jars, and the smoked cooked sausage. I noitce Tesco has a special shelf with Polish food now.
studentarch 15-10-2007, 22:56 wow thanks guys i will definitly make a trip.
i really want to stock up...i recommend you all try kabanos (warm them up and have with mustard and ketchup)which is a type of sausage, pierogi..sort of dumpling things.
i plan to get some gherkins (the polish ones are soo much more subtle) ,Polish ketchup, some bread, some sausage and i would love to find kompot which is this delicious fruity drink thing...mmm
i also love the blue and white pottery...my mum had a hugeee collection at home on the dresser :P
thanks agsin :D
Angilaruk 16-10-2007, 00:26 There's a stall in Castle Market (near the cobblers) that sells Polish food.
HTH
Angi
Sainsbury's in Crystal Peaks and Tesco in Rotherham both have quite a range of Polish food.
A friend's Polish grandmother once cooked me a very nice Polish meal, including stuffed cabbage.
sulavesi 08-11-2007, 22:55 I've seen some polish food in Tesco's on Abbeydale Rd.Also there was that little shop on Abbeydale Rd. (left side coming out of town), not too far from Polish Restaurant, that amongst Asian food also had some Polish.I'm Lithuanian myself, but gonna try that Polish Sklep, might find smth for myself as well :) Kompot... Pirogi... Niam niam... :)
heavenlyarts 08-11-2007, 23:02 on abbeydale road opposite abbeydale picture palace there is a polish butcher who has some excellent polish meat.
Morrisons are stocking quiete a bit :)
I'm a huge fan of Wieska...... (polish meat)
Plain Talker 09-11-2007, 10:10 The red wizard is correct, there's a Polish grocers opposite Highfield Library, it's at the junction of London Road, and Sitwell Place.
There's also Polonium, which is a Polish restaurant, just a couple of hundred yards further on, along Abbeydale Road, and ISTR that there's a Polish Grocers attached to it, (maybe next door?)
Sadly, the elderly Polish chap who ran a delicatessen in the Castle Market appears to have closed his stall down. (edit to say, it's not the same Polish shop in the market as angelarUK mentioned)
fabulous_girl 09-11-2007, 11:08 cool, I'm half polish, though i dont speak any (apart from "i live in sheffield") and have never been, which is disgraceful! Maybe i should check out these shops too and try and learn something from (half) my own culture! I only ever have polish food at christmas.
sophiec1979 09-11-2007, 11:44 theres another one on barnsley road that i saw yesterday when i was on the bus.
unfortunately, i dont know exactly where it is but im sure some one will be able to add some more info to this post.

matt1889 09-11-2007, 11:49 Isn't "kompot" Polish heroin from extracting materials from a poppy?
Pretty much any grocery shop on London Road seems to have a wide range of polish food, at least I think so, because I can't make head nor tail of what is says on the tins.
If yer fancy a bit of Polish flavoured broadband, sheffield based company Plusnet can sort you out. .

bigsteve 09-11-2007, 17:26 there is a continental stall in donny market that sells good stuff but check any continetal grocery shops as they are all starting to get some in.
some foods to check are
katachiski biscuits - small chocolate covered ginger cakes
go umpki - cabbage leafs wraped round mince
kabanos - 12 inch (no jokes) sausage you boil mmmmmmmm
and theres many many more
There is also a polish restaurant on london rd called 'pollonium' ive been 3 times and its cheap and really good if a little quiet.
there is also the 'polish club' on corner of eccalsall and dover rd.
all spellings are approximate as im not dyslexic just thick :hihi:
There is a polish shop on spital hill.
yep London Road the place for you....2 lil general stores a costcutter that has vast selection and even waitrose has it's own polish section ...enjoy! ;o)
loobylou-lou 09-11-2007, 18:04 I have noticed the large supermarkets have started stocking polish goods. Dont patronise them - dont they make enough money already? They are just jumping on the bandwagon, stick with the smaller outlets. I can vouch for the Polish Butcher on Abbeydale Road. I love that shop its like walking into a time warp, not many of those type of shops left, the meat i bought was excellent.
baby barrie 09-11-2007, 21:12 cool, I'm half polish, though i dont speak any (apart from "i live in sheffield") and have never been, which is disgraceful! Maybe i should check out these shops too and try and learn something from (half) my own culture! I only ever have polish food at christmas.
Even cooler my partner is as well well her sir name is anyway :hihi:
fabulous_girl 10-11-2007, 09:51 Yeah my best mate is a quarterpolish and her surname is polish, but mine isnt because my dad is english!
muddycoffee 10-11-2007, 10:04 I have been to visit poland, and I welcome all the polish grocers to our city. It seems to me that there are at least 3 Polish grocers on abbeydale road, as well as the restaurant. They seem to be taking over from some of the smaller Asian grocers.
It is lovely to see all the polish sweets and pastry for sale. It is like being abroad.
Alastair 10-11-2007, 10:48 No one has mentioned Sheffields oldest Polish shop that has been going since just after WW2. Is Mr Kempkas butchers shop on Abbeydale Road still open?
There is also a new Polish shop on Infirmary Road in the row of shops opposite Tesco. It's half Persian half Polish, strange mixture, but what the hell...
purplepippa 10-11-2007, 13:04 There's a Polish deli in Castle Market.
loobylou-lou 10-11-2007, 15:38 Yes Kempkas has been there for years. I recently saw an obituary in the Star for the old Mr Kempka.
andrewchase 10-11-2007, 20:40 Anyone got any Polish recipes? I've noticed morrisons are selling Polish stuff now but how do we put it all together to make a tasty Polish meal?
baby barrie 10-11-2007, 20:44 I'll ask our lasers grandad when i see him:hihi:
sulavesi 11-11-2007, 16:43 Lots of stuff about polish stuff. Been in the shop Polski Sklep, got some stuff, gonna make some curd doughnuts :) Does anyone know anything about Lithuanian things in Sheffield, as that's where I am from :)

We have lots of them with photoes on our website polorama.co.uk[/url] (polish community in the UK portal) but all of them are in Polish. If you have any particular recipe that interests you or if there's a particular product from morrisons that you'd like to buy and use to make a tasty Polish dish :-) we are more than happy to translate it for you. Scroll the main page of Polorama down and use "Kontakt" to send your message

Loads and loads - Kempka's is the oldest on Abbeydale Road op Spar - mostly Pek meats but dried and pickled foods too - Most of the asian shops on Abbeydale Road sell a large polish range and there is also a good sized polish supermarket on Abbeydale Road op Library, bit closer towards town...

Approach any industrial temp agency, RC churches and polish shops/bars/restaurants and they will most likely be able to get some polish people to make contact with you... I used to work in recruitment in Doncaster and I put posters up in the polish shops and churches as they were the only people companies wanted at one time! Fantastic people :D
Lady Star 21-04-2009, 22:09 Yes Kempkas has been there for years. I recently saw an obituary in the Star for the old Mr Kempka.
He died last year - he was a very old man though, but his son still carries the shop on... No bacon can match their smoked - heaven
