View Full Version : Bring back the No.2 circular bus route
theripsaw 15-10-2007, 14:18 The number 2 used to do a circle around the outskirts of the city to save people having to go into the city centre and back out again- at least an hours journey and more like 1.5 / 2 hours including 2 waits for the buses.
To get from Crosspool to hillsborough for example takes at least an hour into town and back out, as opposed to 15 mins across the valley.
Maybe it made no money (and i'm not suprised since it rarely turned up on time or even at all (it was well numbered)), but a reliable small service (like little nippers) would save people much time & money not to mention the pollution and congestion caused by people driving instead.
steveb2007 15-10-2007, 14:30 The no.2 circular bus was the best bus ride route in Sheffield when we were teenagers. We used to get on it on Derbyshire Lane, pay 2p,go to the terminus, then pay another 2p and come back again, and sit on the back seat upstairs with our packet of 10 embassy no.6.
It was great on cold winter nights and it seemed to take hours as well!
slimsid2000 15-10-2007, 14:32 Apparently there will be a free bus around the city centre soon.
pippadoll 15-10-2007, 14:39 I loved the number 2 bus. It was a shame when they changed the number, never really knew what became of it.
I still do not understand why there is not a bus connecting Crookes/Broomhill and Hunters Bar/Ec Road. It would save a lot of car and taxi use.

There is; it was the number 10 last time I used it. Not run by First, and I don't think it's Stagecoach either.
pippadoll 15-10-2007, 14:49 Never heard of it. It can't run up through Crookes as would have seen it; I think it turn of down Crookesmoor Road. There is the Stocksbridge bus, but that run at the oddest hours on the oddest routes.
silverknight 15-10-2007, 15:01 The Number 10 service is the replacement for the old Inner Circle 8/9... now operated by Sheffield Community Transport,,,,, a NOT for Profit Bus company!

Agreed. But was the difference between the No 2 and No 59

They took slightly different routes through Ecclesall way on (the 2 went down Coldwell Lane, I remember that, and the 59 definitely didn't); also, only one of them went via Meadowhead roundabout (I think that was the 59).
For much of the route, they were identical. It never made any difference to me which one I caught to go to Meadowhall or Longley.

You could be right. I used to catch it to the Hallamshire or to the Grindstone, but I don't remember where I used to get off to reach the Grindstone.

Yup. They both went along Norton Avenue, and then Hemsworth Road past the Bagshawe Arms, but the 59 the turned down Norton Lane and onto Bochum Parkway to Meadowhead, whereas the 2 went further on Hemsworth Road and then down Derbyshire Lane.
The number 2 was a useful service. I used it to get home from Hillsborough to Crosspool and then Fulwood. Much better than going through town. On Saturday nights it would take us from the bottom of Coldwell Lane to Norton to see Joe Cocker at Norton dance hall. And, if we didn't miss it, it would bring us back. Usually on time but that was 45 years ago.
As someone else said, not enough people used it so it didn't pay it's way and therefore got the chop.
There are some bus routes now which kind of cover part of it's route:
1 Meadowhall to Batemoor via Manor Top, Gleadless Townend and Norton.
33 Jordanthorpe to City via Chancet Wood, Woodseats and Norton Lees.
85 Millhouses to City via Carterknowle Road and Ecclesall Road
80 City - Hunters Bar - Broomhill - Hallamshire Hospital - City
52 City - Broomhill - Crookes - Hillsborough
