View Full Version : Requesting a copy of the personal info a company has about me on file?

Rather long topic title... but I am currently being hounded by a company to take out loans with them. I took out a loan with them when I was a student to pay for a PC and now that I'm almost done paying it off they won't leave me alone.
Every time they call I tell them I am not interested and I ask them not to call again... but it doesn't work.
I'd like to find out if I can request a copy of all the info they have on me (I think I heard that you can do this and that they have to comply) and if so, how would I go about it... do I contact them directly etc. I just want to waste some of their time, like they waste mine. Also, by law do they have to stop calling if I formally request it, ie. in writing. I am guessing that I lazily failed to tick a box or something when I took out the credit agreement  if I did, can I reverse it?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated... I basically want to be as annoying as is legally possible.

I'd suggest you firstly write a formal complaint to them and ask them to stop hounding you.
If you wish to see a copy of all computer records they hold on you then you should be able to do this. Be aware that the company are within their rights to charge a "small" fee (I think it's usually under £20) for this service - it's not free.
I'd also suggest checking out the mail and telephone preference services: http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/ and http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/ who can dramatically reduce this kind of activity.
Alternatively, write them a note asking them to stop bugging you and copy it many times. Each day put one in an envelope and send it to them, but without a stamp. After having to pay the excess postage each day on the same request they may get the message. Childish, but satisfying in a way.

I think they will get round the TPS constraint as she is an existing customer of theirs and I think you can call existing customers. AFAIK TPS only stops people cold-calling you.

Melanie, if you have anyone else living with you get them to answer the telephone for you and inform them that you have died, and that all these calls are causing them extreme distress.......it worked for me with a certain mobile homes company that were always ringing.......I found safe HAVEN :P from them.

Under the terms of the data protection act, which should be fully in place now,I think they must release the information to you or face a considerable fine.Do a search for it and find out all the ins and outs.
Good luck.

PS. Do what I do with all the junk mail.If they include a self addressed envelope keep them until you have a few and then mix and match and send all the junk to all the other companies. It won't stop it but it gives some pleasure (sad or what?) and keeps the postie in a job.

The Freedom Of Information Act only covers public authorities though.
