£7 adults
£4 kids (4-13) under 4 free
danradclife0 14-10-2007, 18:25 7 pound says it all not getting in to the sheff events argument again 7 pound is a rip off simple as that
I'll be going to one at the Robin Hood here in Stannington like I do every year, free Bonfire, Hog roast, and Beer! Or rather, Orange J2Os for me as I'm trying to lose the spare wheel.

I agree. :|
As for the £7 admission price at the Don Valley one, I'd happily pay for an ORGANISED firework display, not some random firework display run by people who don't know what they're doing or how to handle dangerous rockets etc safely.
fox20thc 14-10-2007, 18:35 I would happily not pay £25 for me my partner and my two boys to go stand in a field with 18,000 people freezing our nuts off to watch what in essence will be visible for half the city anyway. :)
the crown and glove at stannignton always put something on and i can see the bonfire getting built up allready i know she is putting food on aswell.
nosey gets 14-10-2007, 19:28 they should make it more affordable for those of us with a large family at the end of the day its for the kids mainly so a couple of quid each would be enough, its not like they dont make enough from you whilst your in there no doubt drinks and the food will be expensive and then they have all the flashing toys etc etc.. bit steep really

okka north 14-10-2007, 19:33 I heard on Hallam today that Clifton Park has a do on. Has anyone been to that? I resented paying to get into the valley last year and then had to contend with all the rides and stalls.

DelMonte 14-10-2007, 23:48 anyone know of any good pubs or fires round Abbeydale/Netheredge/Heeley/Woodseats?
Can't stand the council type things
coopster1974 15-10-2007, 07:00 I would happily not pay £25 for me my partner and my two boys to go stand in a field with 18,000 people freezing our nuts off to watch what in essence will be visible for half the city anyway. :)
Hopefully getting some VIP tickets, free entry, car parking, food & drink! :hihi::hihi::hihi:

The council used to do a great bonfire night in Endcliffe Park, sadly long gone. There was a big display, an area for letting off your own fireworks and a giant bonfire with a proper Guy on top of it.
Does anyone put a Guy on top of the fire anymore or is that considered to be inciting religious hatred nowadays? :hihi:
gypsytom 15-10-2007, 08:04 The Travellers at Thorpe Hesley Has a large bonfire fireworks and bbq!!
Tanya T 1 15-10-2007, 10:37 We went to the Niagara firework display last year and it was good! I am sure they will have one on this year! Think it was £4 to get in for adults!
What ever happened to the bonfire in the back yard with the fireworks the toffee the family and the guy. Happy memories.
Dizzyblonde 15-10-2007, 12:18 I think the scouts up at Dore have a good display and bonfire. Anyone know the date?
sex kitten 15-10-2007, 12:20 Niagra are charging £2.50 for the outside and £4 if you want to go to the disco inside the club afterwards
EQUALIZER 15-10-2007, 12:28 Ah. Bring back the Endcliffe park bonfire. It was awesome and always attracted thousands of folk.
I love fireworks, but unfortunately think my little boy'll be too young to stand around and watch an organised display due to the noise (not that I'm after fitting silencers to fireworks or anything :hihi:)
Sooooooo..... It sounds sad, but is there one of the car parks at Meadowhall which would be facing the right direction to see most of the Don Valley show? That way the munchkin can sit in the car and just watch without too much trauma...
Thanks in advance!
Cardboard 15-10-2007, 13:24 I think the scouts up at Dore have a good display and bonfire. Anyone know the date?
I'd be interested to know about this one too. The one they had last year was good.
Flightlevel 15-10-2007, 15:04 Call those "bonfire night celebrations"? A damp squib and a rip off! No where in the UK / World does bonfire like Sussex. When a town of 16,000 swells to over 100,000 on the 5th of November and had 7 individual societies each with a £20,000 display and bonfire, blazing barrel racing, 10,000 strong torchlit procesions and magnificant set pieces.....then it can be called "bonfire night".

Every village, however small can attract 1000s to their own celebrations. Here are just three.

The though of going to Don Valley and pay £7 for the "experience" is sterile and rather naff. In the true spirit of bonfire it would be better if in sheffield to go to a smaller organised display put on by a local pub, club etc. Somewhere you can stand around a fire after watching the Guy meet his firey fate, watch a few safely set off fireworks with a hog-roast and good company.

I was thinking of taking my partner and little lad out to that bonfire at don valley but sod paying £14 then your food+drink and rides after your talking ridiculous amounts.
bluecanary 15-10-2007, 16:03 There used to be a really good one at the pub out on Ringinglow Road (the Norfolk Tavern, maybe?). Anyone know if this is still going on these days or have the Health & Safety/Insurance types put paid to this as well?

Dizzyblonde 15-10-2007, 18:55 Norfolk Arms at Ringinglow has just undergone a major refit as a Hotel with a bar for mucky walkers, doubt a bonfire would be their thing somehow. The have not had one since 1998 as far as I can recall. In 1999 most pubs said they were saving for the millenium celebration and then after that stopped having bonfire nights, shame. Pint and fireworks should be part of life's pattern.

The Norfolk Arms at Ringinglow has been tarted up recently - doesnt seem like the sort of place anymore than would do a bonfire event. I could be wrong so it may be worth ringing. Personally if in Sheffield I'ld rather go along to one of the smaller displays organised and fundraising perhaps for charity. Someone already mentioned the Dore Scouts (which I think is just near the Cross Sythes on the right on the way to Owler Bar). Other folks mention the Robin Hood in Stannington. Another place that does a good display on 5th Nov is the Fat Cat pub on Alma St. in Kelham island. That often attracts a big crowd, has a large display and of course there's food and decent beer.
So what's in Orange J2Os then? They taste like they've got a lot more calories in than beer.
Don't want to pee on your bonfire Rich, so to speak....but I have news from a reliable source....actually, maybe this is the best news you could have....

Nannan007 16-10-2007, 10:19 I love bonfire night ... oooooo - aaaaaaaaaaaaah !!
The Rivelin are having a bonfire - with fireworks and BBQ (Joanne's food - second to none) and that is where I :shall be with the family. banana::banana:
Cardboard 16-10-2007, 10:36 Are there any bonfire bash's on sat night (3rd Nov) by any chance? Im off on my jollies on the 4th and I dont wanna miss out!! Will have to have my own if not!
Don't forget the fabulous bonfire and firework display that's held in Chelsea Park each year, organised by the Scouts. It's on Saturday 3rd with fire being lit at about 6pm, it's free but all donations are gratefully received.

Thanks jacq. Where is Chelsea Park?
Anyone know what day and time the Dore bonfire starts, and if there are any extra buses laid on? Bit worried that if lots of people turn up might be hard to all squeeze on the number 30!
Also any details of other events in west sheffield or Hillsborough, Stannington... thanks!

czechroman 22-10-2007, 11:42 I used to like norfolk parks big bonfire, that was the best i think.:)
fabulous_girl 22-10-2007, 11:44 I'm confused as to why people near me were settingoff fireworks on saturday before it was even dark- surely a colossal waste of money?!
gypsytom 22-10-2007, 11:55 Yep Huge Bonfire, firework display hotdogs and burgers and an extra bottle bar outside and you dont have to pay for entry!!
Was there a really good one at Dronfield park last year?
If so, is it on this year?
jonlewney 22-10-2007, 15:15 Catch the train out ot edale the display is wicked and it makes the whole night more of an adventure!
lyndsayx 22-10-2007, 15:39 I'm confused as to why people near me were settingoff fireworks on saturday before it was even dark- surely a colossal waste of money?!
i heard a few going off last week at about 2pm. just a few little ones, assumed it was kids messing about.
lyndsayx 22-10-2007, 15:41 also, does anyone know about the fireworks in matlock this year? not been for a while, but i remember them being quite good.
SaxonLeigh 22-10-2007, 15:43 were going to clifton park in rotherham this year for firework display. we used to go every year untill they stopped doing it for some reason & it was always the best fireworks display we ever went to. been told its on again this year, i just hope its better than ever. they have a funfair & refreshments. there is a childrens fireworks display & an adults one. in recent years (dont know if they will do it this year) the local school children have made guys & put them on the masive bonfire. i always make the mistake of putting lodes of layers on & then end up sweltering because of the heat from the bonfire. its also free entry, non of this paying an extortionate £7.
all i ever go for is fireworks really, i have been known to stand outside the don valley bowl just to watch the fireworks go off.

danradclife0 22-10-2007, 19:46 And it's brilliant!
waste of money take a look at rotherham with clifton park free entry thats good value for money the fair at meadowhall is having a fireworks bash on 28th oct and 3rd november also massive funfair there
also, does anyone know about the fireworks in matlock this year? not been for a while, but i remember them being quite good.
We went last week for the illuminations/boat parade/fireworks and while it was ok, we were told that last year they were charging £1 a ticket to watch the boat parade. This year it's £3! (kids free). And it was really crowded so you couldn't see much anyway. The firework display at the end was again just 'ok' - it lasted about 5 minutes, maybe a little more.
There is a bonfire at edale this year. Its on the sat 3rd.Theres about 20minutes of fireworks, just enought o be getting a stiff neck. And the skies out here are really dark, so the colours really show.Theres also a beer tent, and bbq.

Two hour traffic queue to get in, three hour traffic queue to get out?
Sorry Fox, couldn't resist :D
I seriously miss the days of the free civic bonfires and fireworks in every (main) Sheffield park,
Lot's of local atmosphere :)
This centralised/no other choice do at Don Valley leaves me cold.
Probably 'cos you're so far away from a fire.
Just my opinion ;)
I know I am going to get shouted at for this but the Springwood on Castlebeck Avenue/Hastilar road has a massive display every year, not sure which day it is this year but it is usually a great night for the kids and its FREE !!!
They have burgers and stuff and the a bonfire !
Go on...You can start on me but I will say in all the years I have lived by this pub and watched their displays there has never been any trouble, not that I have seen or heard anyway
I went to the display at Magna last November. It was a great display and not half as crowded as it is at Don valley.

Can't stand the council type things
There is a scout hut just behind Rushdale Road, they are doing a display on Monday 5th starting at 6 pm, it costs £3. It's always a nice display. There is also a free one in Heeley down by the Bridge Inn, but I can't for the life of me remember what day it is on and can't find any info anywhere!!
loopylulu 24-10-2007, 20:33 Dont know if anyone has put this already - theres a fire at the wisewood inn on loxley road on bonfire night - fire lit at 7pm - families only - outside bar - barbecue i think - and it doesnt cost anything to watch the fire and fireworks!!

slimsid2000 02-11-2007, 14:41 We went to the Niagara firework display last year and it was good! I am sure they will have one on this year! Think it was £4 to get in for adults!
I prefer the Viagra one but it is a bit limp.
frostiekazza 02-11-2007, 15:01 I used to like norfolk parks big bonfire, that was the best i think.:)
Yes i have to agree , Norfolk park was the best by far .
They used to have the bonfire in the middle and it was hilly all the way round so no matter wher you stood you could see it .I remember as well they used to have two tanks made of fireworks that would fire at each other , then after the fireworks , the fairground and a hot dog or burger , used to love it !!
slimsid2000 02-11-2007, 15:07 Remember to chaeck for hedgehogs first before lighting your fires.
thetawaves 02-11-2007, 15:13 What's the best way of getting to Chelsea Park? Have Googled it but to no avail.
samstar999 02-11-2007, 15:17 Get bus up past Banner Cross, get off stop before Prince of Wales, walk along Brincliffe Edge for a bit and it's left. You can find it on Google Maps, it took a while but put in Chelsea Park, Sheffield UK and it comes up (something about Tom's maps).
It's a lovely park!
thetawaves 02-11-2007, 15:19 Thanks very much, samstar999 :)
samstar999 02-11-2007, 15:20 No worries!

and mice and them hedghogs which curl up.... you may mistake them for litmus paper. i've also known frogs to be in bonfires too, so make sure you double check for a variety of species before attempting to "trying" to light the bonfire.
The rule of thumb is; If it's full of wildlife, its harder to light. As in.... "oh crap, Bob, I know we did wildlife check's but this bonfire is taking an a*sehole to light, are you sure we packed it right?" Bob replies "Its cool Trevor, just keep looking like you know what you doing whilst I kindly escort mr and mrs fox accompanied by half the congregation of st.hedgehog out of the amphetheatre of doom".
The reply is muffled by a cheer from the crowd and the sound of sweaty bloke "DJ Ricks" outdoor kiddie disco. Comon kiddies, it's fiiiiiiiiiii....yuuuuuuuuurrrr....wouuuuuuuuuuuuuu rkks....niiiiiiiiiiite! (lame cheer)

hi , just a query but where or what is niagra and what night is their bonfire
Draggletail 03-11-2007, 13:05 Remember to chaeck for hedgehogs first before lighting your fires.
Good point slimsid - I love a bit of roast hedgehog with me parkin :hihi:
Clay-baked wild birds or hedgehogs
This isn't one to try at home (you could well fall foul of wildlife protection laws, apart from anything else), but the easiest way to cook wild birds (or hedgehogs for that matter) is not to pluck them but to smear wet clay onto the feathers. The birds are then cooked on an open fire and the feathers and skin come away when they are cooked. The same thing happens with the spines of hedgehogs, which were traditionally clay-baked by the Romany people. The meat is said to taste like pork – hence the hedgehog's name.

create.event 06-06-2008, 15:36 The one held on Petre street playing fields is good. The firework display is brilliant and lasts for ages! There are also a few activities for the kids, hook a duck etc. last year there was one of those climbing walls, food vans and music tent and BIG bonfire! And it's FREE!!!!
This event will be entering its 5th Year; I would like to extend an invite to anyone wishing to come to a free, well organised and well attended event.
Each year we endeavour to improve on the previous one. The way we do this is to ask those in attendance to complete questionnaires on what should be improved and what they would like to see there in the future. We also have a planning group each year with a series of meetings where we invite local people to come and plan the event with us. If you do attend this year’s event please make sure you complete one of the forms to get your views heard. We can’t have a good event without you, the people.
I would like to extend my thanks to Sheffield born Steve Edwards who was the headline act in 2007, for his appearance and for his fabulous performance at the event, singing hits like “world hold on” and “together” and all the local people who put the hard work in making this event an ever growing success
“Bring on year 5”

sTaGeWaLkEr 27-10-2009, 07:49 AM i missing something here, there are many posts on here saying that there are fires on Sat 3rd, the 3rd is a Wednesday with the saturday being the 7th ???? Tell me its not me going mad, there is also one advertised for the Niagra on Sat the 3rd ?
Check out the year of the thread. ;)
We're off to 'After Dark' - as usual.
We've tried others but just not found anywhere to top it. :)
I've closed this thread as the fact it's from a couple of years ago has caused some confusion. If anyone wants to discuss activities for bonfire night 2009, please do so on the appropriate thread/start an appropriately titled new thread.
