View Full Version : BBC channels are missing from Freeview

In the past few days, especially in the evening, all the BBC channels on digital have been jazzing up and losing the signal.
This morning, I cannot get a single digital BBC channel, it just says No signal. All the rest of the Freeview channels are fine.
Does anyone else have this problem or know why its happening.
duckweed 14-10-2007, 11:04 I'm on Freeview but haven't had problem with BBC specifically. Some evenings I've had problems with channels breaking up briefly but this was a problem on all freeview channels. I gather this won't happen when we are all digital.
Old_Bloke 14-10-2007, 11:27 The BBC channels are broadcast as a different 'group' somehow and the reception is a bit weaker than the rest of the channels so they'll be the first ones that get dropped wen atmospheric conditions degrade the signal further.
Spending a few quid on a signal booster sorted it out for me; reception is now perfect all the time.
cgksheff 14-10-2007, 11:29 I assume that you are talking about the TV signals and would guess at an ariel/alignment problem.
Retuning is needed for the Radio signals since changes were made earlier this month:

TESTPASS 14-10-2007, 12:25 Yes, your arial is slightly out as pointed out.
if you move the areial slightly around you will find that you will loose bbc channels while gaining indipendant tv and vice a versa.
it wont be out by a lot but it makes a difference if your not on a digital specific arial.
I have 3 boxes on three tv's I can get the same amount of Chanels on two of the three, but on the other Cbeebies and Chanel 5 are missing. I have tried retuning but these 2 chanels are still evading my one box/
I've just had a new aerial installed by Slaters (recommendation there) and haven't had channels dropped since (cross fingers) so it's more likely an aerial problem.

If so, then I suggest you have it replaced with a new one designed to recieve Digital Channels. Following that you will probably find it works perfectly every time.

there is no such aerial that is designed to to recieve digital channels all aerials are the same you need a stronger aerial with a better DB gain that what you already have and ideally new cable
there is no difference in aerials at all nobody sells digital aerials because none are ever made they dont exist never have never will it is a complete fallacy that you require a digital aerial example if you have a ten element aerial and you cannot recieve freeview you require a 14 or a 18 element aerial or in really poor reception areas a wide band or high gain aerial dont let anybody kid you

As far as I understand it there are aerials that are better than others for receiving digital.
Aerials work using the induction principle, whereby changing magnetic waves (including the radio spectrum) generate tiny electrical flows in conductors. The aerials are designed to increase that flow as much as possible, and this is achieved by spacing the elements to match the wavelength of the transmission.
The digital channels are using the top end of the tolerance of existing aerials, as they transmit on a higher frequency. A new aerial for digital should therefore have its elements closer together to increase the induction effect for transmissions at that higher frequency.
Indeed it seems that you may have to have a certain type of aerial depending upon which group of frequencies your transmitter broadcasts on.

this as always been the case and yes you are right but it still does not alter the fact no aerials are made for digital reception you buy a better or larger aerial NO aerials are made specifically for digital ANY AERIAL you buy today will pick up digital signals

I have an old broken set top aerial (£1.99 a few years ago), and can receive all digital channels.:)
