View Full Version : Stopping Smoking and Eating...

I'm quite smug tonight because I've stopped smoking. However, I've almost eaten my entire weight in Fox's Luxury Biscuits; this is not good.

Traditionally, I am quite prone to gaining weight (been 19 stone at 6ft 6 high!) and am now reasonably slim.

Has anyone got any tips for me to stay away from the fags and the biscuit barrell at the same time?

Telling me not to buy he buscuits in the first place won't help! I don't buy them, the girl I live with does!

Wobbling my way to bed now. If I post a lonely heart ad on here tomorrow, you know my partner got wind of the biccies! :heyhey:

Yeah, stopping smoking tends to make your mouth water constantly

Chew gum, suck sweets (aniseed balls or gob stoppers last longest :D ) Chew your pen top, or suck your thumb!! :hihi:

You'll acclimatise eventually

(Is my spelling going downhill?)

It's an uphill struggle, but I'm still smoke free!

Hang in there. I speak as an ex-smoker (20 a day for nearly as many years) and I know how hard it is. I heard something on the radio recently saying that nicotine is a harder addiction to beat than heroin.

Well I don't know if that true but I know that it can be hell. Unfortunately weight gain is a side effect and unless you are going to start going to the gym or take up running or something like that I think that you have to accept there will be a weight increase.

I just took on board that I would gain a little weight but didn't make that an issue. I wanted every bit of my determination and willpower to be used to fight the smoking habbit.

Now I'm well and truly a non-smoker, and only now, have I turned my attention to the weight issues.

Don't ask too much of yourself at once.

whoever said that nicotine addiction is harder to beat than heroin addiction is a moron and needs educating!!!

My tip is to keep your hands and mouth occupied as much as possible, by using chewing gum or anything else you can think of.

Hi Scott,

The guy who said that is an expert on addiction; following excerpt from university website (I think)

I would like to thank this nations leading expert on addiction, Jack Henningfield for pointing out that nicotine is more addictive than heroin, alcohol, or cocaine. A true voice uncorrupted by tobacco money. I would also add that tobacco has a far higher death rate (33%?) than either heroin, alcohol, or cocaine. Yet, addiction criteria alone does not determine the nicotine (or illicit drug) health threat.

I think the difference is that nicotine is taken in much smaller quantities than heroin, and therefore seems less addictive.

no - you said, it was harder to kick the nicotine habit than the heroin habit. it isn't, heroin is much, much harder (trainspotting is a good guide here)
What your 'expert' said (which is true) was 'nicotine was more addictive than heroin'. Which it is because of the chemical compounds in fags.
You are getting the addictiveness of something confused with the severity of withdrawals from it.

Just to clear it then.

Fags = more addictive (eaiser to get hooked on -almost anyone) withdrawls; whilst uncomfortable are moderate and therefore easier to cope with.

Heroin = less addictive (mainly people with a predelicition to addiction - many try it and don't become hooked) But once addicted its a living hell to kick therefore much, much harder than fags - infact most withdrawls take place in units or special wards with access to psychiatric support. Its the exact process for alcohol. Not everyone who drinks becomes an alcoholic although some do. fags tend to be addictive to most however.

Any questions PM me- it's nearly 2am- I can't sleep - and i aint addicted to owt.

Sorry, however, I didn't say that at all. Have a look at the thread.

I have never used heroin, but can imagine it's much harder to deal with than nicotine addiction. On the plus side, two days smoke free, AND I went for some beers last night! And I haven't been near the biscuit barrel today. I'll not dwell on the visit to the pizza shop though

Jan 2nd was the original plan (Jan 1st plan was to be spent sat in pyjamas with hangover and smoking!), but I kept finding reasons to put it off e.g. going out on this evening, job interview (and stress!) on another etc.

Glad I did it though. Really don't want to go back there, and of course I'm almost £70 per week better off!

Congratulations on kicking the dreaded weed into touch! Keep it up.

As far as the munchies are concerned, get yourself lots and lots of your favourite fruit and when you feel the urge, stuff your face. And get Orbit extra gum, it'll help neutralise the plaque acid in your mouth after eating. :o)

I would like to think I didn't honk in the first place, but I understand your comment :hihi:

I got in my car for the first time today since I stopped, and the horrid smell of fags was awful. I never noticed it before. I drove all the way with the windows open and got myself a magic tree!

I've done nothing but eat since I stopped. Gonne go easy on the diet for a couple of days until I get over the initial smokeless shock!

Thanks for your encouragement guys!

Fruit contains mostly water Kristian, so it's a lot healthier for you and the nutrients/calories contained in it are easier to lose.

Well done for quiting.
Lollipops are good in helping with quiting, the chupa chups type ones coz they give you something to do with your hands while you get used to not smoking, you can get sugar free ones too so you dont have to worry about the calories.

Your metabolism slows down when you stop smoking anyway, so you will probably put some weight on regardless of whether you eat more or not anyway, but its still well worth it.
