View Full Version : What's the time - Sheffield clocks

Just a little moan....on my way to work yesterday i noticed that the following clocks on buildings were not working;

the church near bramall lane, the bbc clock, the railway station clock, and not forgetting the now defunct office world clock.

plus the digital clock on the end of the car showroom near the roundabout at the bottom of bramall lane is always a few minutes out.

i know it's not earth shattering news but why bother to have the clocks if they're not prepared to maintain them.

How many times do you pass any of them? After all they are right twice a day :D

You might get lucky!

The railway station clock has been out of action for as long as I can remember.

Hmm, I can't see how buiilding work really prevents them from sticking a couple of 'AA' batteries in the clock

It's a poor excuse.

But only if they've stopped and are not continually slow; if they are continyally slow they are NEVER right!

no, if they're SLOW then they'll be right at some point when the actual time catches up. If they're WRONG but going at the right speed, then they'll never be right :)

I haven't altered the clock in my garage back to GMT, now every time I spend some time in there I am always surprised when I come out.
I also have a time machine, but it only goes back 6 minutes, I use it when I'm 5 minutes late!

Good thread mate

I miss the alternating clock/ temperature on the side of Outo Kumpu; what's happened to that?

It can't be cost - Kumpu was Sheffield's top earner in last years The Star best earners league...

The clocks are not working because the people who maintain them cannot find the time.
Some of them have face on.

They need a good ticking off, it just needs someone to point the finger.

It's a poor excuse.

Because it will be a mains clock, and may even have remote connections to keep it in sync or wind it on/back. It may have been fitted into position by the stone masons, but has to be commissioned (wired up/programmed?) by a tech guy. Or at least wired up by electricians when they put new wiring in.

Since reading the first post I have been taking more notice. Many public clocks are not working, Radio Sheffield should get theirs put right as it is actually going round but showing the wrong time.

Most church clocks I passed are right and I was impressed to see that the one on the top of Regent Flats in Hillsborough is right.

Midland station still isn't going yet, what's preventing them setting these 2 clocks going?

I think owners of public clocks have a duty to keep them going and showing the correct time.

A quick update:

The Radio Sheffield clock is showing the correct time now but there's a banner covering one side of it.

I don't know about the particular one (St Mary's, Bramall Lane, which I suspect to be electric) but most church clocks, especially older ones which tend to be Victorian, are weight driven and pendulum regulated, so it's only a matter of turning a crank to rewind the rope around the drum to raise the weight. If they have a striking train that is generally driven by a separate weight which also has to be wound up.
