is there a tool that allows one to rename MULTIPLE files all at the same time that have the same extension? For example I have some mp3 album folders which has the track title only in the file name and not the artist name, so media searches for the artist using DJ software do not work.

So is there a way of adding a common element to a collection of files without changing the individual file names, ie adding the generic artist to a whole lot of mp3 files that simply inserts the name of the artist but retains the track title, rather than doing it file by file?

I use ckrename (http://www.musicsucks.com/CKSoft/CKRename/) for renaming multiple files:).

Are you talking about the mp3 tags? if so get :

Its pretty good and allows batch update of the metadata tag(s) so for example you can add an album name.
