If you walked 10000 steps, what would it be equivilant to in miles on average? One of my friends has got one of those walk-a-meters and is curious.
Cheers.

I guess if he/she had very long legs then a mile could be 1 step. cazzaworld 18-01-2005, 21:17 What is the average? Edd 18-01-2005, 21:23 Yer supposed to measure it - if your friend is 6'6" then 10000 steps is gonna be ALOT further than if he/she is 5'4" ! The way to measure it is to walk a known distance, and count the number of steps you took. Alternatively, you might want to try these "average" values - youll always get a more accurate answer by measuring it though!: Estimate by Height Females: Your height x .413 equals your stride length Males: Your height x .415 equals your stride length depoix 18-01-2005, 21:29 i used t do a lot of mountain/hill walking and as a navigation aid i used to measure my paces,im 5,11, so my stride works out at 120 paces for 100 yards x that by 10 and you have the width of a square on an ordanance survey map covering 1000 yards/metres if you add a few steps and adjust, but walking up hill i take shorter paces so it depends on the gradient, so the pedometers people are using today aren,t much good for judging distance or navigation unless you are on a flat road or track,so if you look at a map and measure a distance from point a to point b,taking into concideration the up hill and down hill configuration you could end up doing a lot more walking than you anticipated, on a map if you draw a straight line and it measures 4 miles you might end up doing 6 or 7, so the answer to your question imho is there can be no average. tell your friend to set it up for flat, hill and down hill, take the mean average and see what he comes up with alchresearch 18-01-2005, 21:32 My mate and I did a walk in the Peaks last week and he recorded 7000 steps. My GPS logged about four miles. depoix 18-01-2005, 21:49 Originally posted by alchresearch My mate and I did a walk in the Peaks last week and he recorded 7000 steps. The word mile derives from the fact that the Romans defined it as 1000 paces (same root as millimetre, milligram etc.) The counted a pace as two steps. So that equates to approx 80cms per step. I think thats about right for me, but I'm quite tall. So by that standard 10,000 steps would be 5 miles. alchemist 19-01-2005, 08:40 when i used to wear my pedometer my 10000 steps averaged around 4 miles dave matsalleh 19-01-2005, 15:45 Join the army and get a RSM with a pacestick he will soon let you know!!! Sorry Cols 19-01-2005, 16:14 The thing is with a pedometer is that you need to calibrate it against a measured mile. Put in your step measurement, walk a mile and adjust the step figure accordingly. Problem is finding a measured mile. You could walk down the hard shoulder of a motorway using the markers. You may also get to appear on TV in the Sheffield traffic cops programme. :) cgksheff 19-01-2005, 19:26 Now then, ...... would that be a "Country Mile"? muddycoffee 15-02-2005, 15:04 Originally posted by cazzaworld If you walked 10000 steps, what would it be equivilant to in miles on average? One of my friends has got one of those walk-a-meters and is curious. I have a PEDOMETER and use it quite often, I carefully calibrated it to my stride. And I find that 10,000 steps is about 4.89 miles. Although that distance would only be correct if average walking pace on the flat level ground. I am 6'2" and my legs are long, about 90cm [35"] from my crotch down to the floor with my shoes on. |
