Hi!

We are going away this Christmas and for the first time are unable to leave our dog with anyone to look after whilst we are away.

Can anyone recommend a kennels that they know about / have used themselves or warn us of problems that may have occured.

We live in Sheffield, but will take her further a field if anyone knows of anywhere that would be better for her!

We really need to get it sorted as I will panic until I know she is in good hands, any feed back would be greatly received and appreciated.

THANK YOU!

Have a look in the pets section under Sheffield Interest Groups - there's been a thread done already there so you could try doing a search :)

Hollows at Woodhouse Mill. The owner, Dot, is amazing (as is the man that works there, Paul I think, but he bathed our lass last time she was in!). We have a 13 year old spoilt stupid bassett hound and she returns from the Hollow's tired, but happy. We did once put her in a different kennels in up in Cumbra and she was most upset when we collected her.

Definately go for Dot's, she really looks after them.

Thank you all very much, we will be looking in to them this weekend. Quite positive that there is 3 that keep coming up and have got good reviews from you.

I know what your saying Md1sxc, we thought that we may struggle so late on to get anywhere at xmas, but will deff try and keep trying in case of cancellations etc!!!

Also bobbyblade, think we will do your idea and see if she fits in ok somewhere by booking her in for a night or two before hand.

Thanks everyone again for taking the time to pass on info, just hope we can sort it out now

The Hollows without a doubt. It's the only kennels our dog quite likes going to. Dot is wonderful and really loves the dogs. By far the best we've ever used.

Help/advice please.
Anyone recommend dog boarding kennels? We need somewhere for our lovely lab for 2 weeks end of August.Think we might've left it too late and only horrible ones have spaces left...in which case we WONT be leaving him!!

Anyone used Rainbow Kennels or Skewhill Kennels both in Grenoside?

Thank you

Be careful, who you let care for your dog, as one of those (I forget which) lost my sister in laws' cat a couple of years ago, when it was "kennelled" there when they went on holiday.

We've used Rainbow before and both dogs came back with Kennel Cough and stunk to high heaven, it took weeks and expensive vet visits to clear the cough despite them having the vaccine.

Hi All,

We may have to put our much loved doggie into boarding in August whilst we are away for out wedding and honeymoon as so far no-one has been forthcoming in offering her a sofa to sleep on for the duration. She is a rescue dog on at least her third home which is why we found it preferable to be with someone she knew in a home environment as opposed to kennels, but now we need to start considering other options.

Can anyone recommend a good kennels, preferably in Sheffield itself or even better someone who boards dogs in their own home. Also is there anywhere we should most certainly avoid :suspect:.

Any help much appreciated.

I can recommend:

Lea Farm Boarding Kennels (and cattery)
Lea Farm,
Low Bradfield,
Sheffield S6 6HY

Open Mon-Sat 10.30am-12.30pm & 5pm to 7pm
Sunday 10.30am to 12.30am

Telephone (0114) 2851229

Our dog stayed there for a weekend and he was very well looked after, Lea Farm was highly recommended by a friend who has tried lots of kennels - she wouldn't send her dogs anywhere else.

It was a little difficult to find though, if you ring them don't forget to ask for directions.

I would recommend Mutlins at Gleedless Road. It is run by Mike and Jackie who have the dogs in their own home. We've used them twice before and our boys love going. They're booked in again this year!! They board 6 dogs maximum and have 3 dogs of their own. They really care for the dogs as if they're their own. I wouldn't send my boys anywhere else, kennels would drive them mad.

Has anyone used Dunston Lodge?
http://www.dunstonlodge.com

From the website it looks really good, no idea about prices though.

I've looked at Mutlins too, they say the dogs all run free and 'play' together, but what if one attacks another? can they be sure that no dogs are going to turn aggresive, if they've only just met them?

Cats, whats a suitable amount of time to be able to leave cats in the house? overnight? two nights? never? I know there will be different opinions on this :)

We use the same vets but I always let the vets know when I go away so they can set-up a credit account for me to pay on return (we also have 6 rabbits and 3 cats registered with them :hihi:) and there is already a back-up plan in place  between both sitters.

The dogs do all run free and are never left unsupervised, she assured us she hasn't had any escapees. As for the dogs attacking each other, that is why they like to arrange a meeting first with you and your dog to asess the temprament of your dog, and they would only book him in if he was going to be ok with the other dogs booked in at the same time.

Hope this helps, if not give Jackie @ Mutlins a call.

We're paying about £20 per night at Mutlins. Think the prices varied from £18 upwards depending on size of dog. But that price is everything included we only take his bed and toy, and we are happy that he is inside in a cosy house not a cold kennel.

I havent got round to reading the many posts as im still too involved with the yellow pages - you know how it is - once you pick it up you just cant put it down.

Your dog has to go and meet the family and resident dogs there first, if there is any trouble with that first meeting they will not accept your dog. They have the grounds split up into different sections and the house is really large so dogs can be split up if needed. When a new dog arrives they introduce all the dogs to the new dog, one by one in a controlled envoronment untill they are happy that all the dogs should get on. There is always someone in the house as it is a large family and so the dogs are never left unattended. Jackie and Mike have worked with dogs for years and so are very experienced in all their needs/behaviour.

"I've looked at Mutlins too, they say the dogs all run free and 'play' together, but what if one attacks another? can they be sure that no dogs are going to turn aggresive, if they've only just met them?"

That thought did initially cross my mind when looking into boarding there, but after my experiences with Mutlins I would never send my dogs anywhere else now. :)

Very helpful and mutlins looks fantastic ....... Unfortunately i think the dog will need to be kenneled / isolated due to its attitude to other dogs and an inclination to escape and attack. (only had it 6 weeks and am working on that but dont expect significant change before end of Feb)

It would have been useful to state that in your original post

Jaycliffe kennels near Dinnington would most likely be the ideal place then. The kennels are arranged such that the dogs cannot see each other so are less stressed than in other establishments, and the staff handle dogs particularly well

OK - done all the homework and thanks for all the input.

As the dog is in early stage training and bonding i think it would damage its progress if i were to return it from whence it came - i.e kennel environment.

It craves human attention and is very affectionate and in isolation is also very obedient but........... it is aggressive and disobedient in the presence of other dogs - an anti social trait which i believe it has picked up from my mother in law.

All my previous dogs have been looked after by relatives but said relatives have pets of their own and im not prepared to compromise the safety of other animals with an antisocial / dangerous dog.

So ill tell you what i want what i really really want - i really really really want a pet sit aaaaah .................who lives within walking distance of the Anvil pub and who is able to tend the dog at my house by giving it human company and affection a few times a day in its home environment - feed /clean up where necessary and tuck in at night.

Any offers - P M please.

thanks all a once again.

Hi there - give Liz Rhodes a ring on sheffield 2303341 - Benrevic Kennels on Andwell Lane, Mayfield Valley (not too far away from Stannington). The kennels are 1st rate, heated and what Liz doesn't know about dogs isn't worth knowing, she breeds, has shown and won at Crufts, accompanies shoots with her faultlessly trained dogs and runs training groups. My dog loves going there on his holidays!! Hope this helps.

I will take the alternative number in case anything goes pearshaped at last minute if thats ok.

The property is set out in a way that lets the dog have the run of the conservatory and enclosed yard but the arrangements i have in place are for the dog to split 50 / 50 - minder staying at dogs house and dog stopping with minder at their house so hopefully the bonding process with our new dog wont be too severely interupted as my main agenda is not to have the dogs insecurities re instated by kenneling.

That said some of the recommended kennels are fantastic but not right for the circumstances which the dog has imposed on me.

Its trained me to sit and roll over and beg so far and its a brilliant tutor as im coming on in leaps and bounds.

had a reply to my text - the kennels they use are called Gibdyke Lodge in Thorne. My friend does not have the number to hand as she usually visits their website via google to find it

The people who run it are fantastic with the dogs, but don't expect any american style customer service shall we say ;)

I do know that they were able to take their dog up to meet the people who run it, and then took her back for an overnight stay so she had the chance to get used to the place before she actually stayed there

may be a bit late in the day to add this but Jaycliffe underwent a change of management in July 2007. We were always satisfied with leaving our beloved pet there prior to this change of management so had no reason to not use the kennels after July 2007. Animal lovers beware that we boarded our beloved pet at Jaycliffe, Thurcroft in the latter part of 2007 and within minutes of securely leaving our pet with the owner of the premises our pet had been allowed to escape. During our frantic searching we spoke to people living near to the kennels and were led to believe that our pet wasn't the first nor last.

I just have no idea what to do. I got a quote from Dunston lodge for over £200 for my 2 sharing a kennel for a week i couldn't believe it and i would be providiing the food as well.

I have kind of ruled out them being boarded in a house as Tilly reverts to not being house trained when she is somewhere away from home without me and i know this is difficult to manage unless someone has lino and is not bothered.
I also know people have different standards and different experiences of kennels so what worked for one person might not for another it really does terrify me.

Any ideas and up to date suggestions for places where i can board my 2 for a week in October bearing in mind one is 16 and the other is 10. I don't want them somewhere that has kennels facing onto other kennels as it will really wind Albert up.

Thanks guys

Have you tried speaking to Kate at Happy at Home, she is based in Dinnington and is a lovely person. I think Gemima on here knows her too. She looks after 4 dogs of one of our customers when they go away and they are expensive, championship dogs so they are very particular who they entrust their pets to. She does home visits as well as boarding in her own home. Her number is
Tel:07840 716897 or you can Email:kate.happyathome@btinternet.com
If she cant help she may know of somewhere that might be right for your requirements as she is more over your way.

I wouldn't touch Jaycliffes with a barge pole or if you offered me a million pounds. We have just won a court case against them for the cruelty and neglect they put our dog through last October.

like you we got no response to letters , also went to press - not for malicious reasons, we enquired about placing an advert but as they were interested in doing an article went with it to warn other potential users. Ended up resorting to the small claims court as we weren't getting anywhere writing to the owner. Hope Merlin makes a full recovery.

We use Foxholes which is just near J38 of the M1 past Darton by the old Post Office at Haigh. None of the kennels face each other, the staff are fantastic. We did an ad hoc visit, was welcomed to look around and actually found the staff on their hands and knees scrubbing the kennels floors whilst others were dog walking. They get walked around a lake in the grounds twice a day, cater for all ages and diets etc. Up to last year when they were fully booked when we wanted to go away last minute, we had used them for years with no problems and the dogs never even looked back when we left them, just walked off happily with the kennel staff and licked them all over. They were clean and happy too when we picked them up.

I think it's £12.50 for a single dog and £19 for a pair if they share the same kennel. Or it was last year when we tried to book them in. They also insist on all vaccs and was the first kennel in our area who also insisted on the kennel cough vaccine:thumbsup:
