I'm thinking of knitting this, but unsure of the yarn and needles.
Am I right in thinking I want 00 (UK) needles?
I know it says wool-ease thick and quick, but can anyone recommend a different yarn? Thanks

Thats a good jacket pattern. I hope someone helps with the needles etc. I might want a go!
Ive seen a few thick yarns recently and perhaps other members will put us right as to suitability. King Cole Twister, King Cole Mega, Sirdar Ultra, Sirdar Bigga. I couldnt get enough Twister to do a jacket I have a pattern for though.
US Size 13 are 00 needles which are 9.0mm in metric. I know sirdar Ultra uses 10mm so thats close, as does King cole Twister. King cole magnum chunky uses 8mm but Im sure I havent seen any that uses 9mm. Sirdar bigga will be too big I think.

I don't know anything about chunky yarn as it doesn't go well with my chunky hips so I bow to Yellowrose's knowledge. You could use two or three strands of something thinner (aran?) held together, you might get more choice in colours that way. You want a bit of knitting that ends up knitting to 9 stitches to 4" without standing up on its own or being too floppy and you might need to go through a few different needle sizes before you hit it right. This is one case where you really will need a tension square.
Wingham's sell some pencil roving that's made for spinning that might hit it right, when I've knitted it I got 10 stitches to 4". I can think of lots of reasons why that wouldn't be a good idea though - a jacket would be heavy, take ages to dry and probably pill. If you want a go to see what it looks like I think I have some upstairs.
You could probably use either King Cole Aero or Twister for this pattern. They use between 9 and 10mm needles. Twister tension is 8.5sts on a 10mm and Aero is 10sts on a 10mm. Depending on how you knit you could achieve the tension using either of these yarns. You need to do a tension square though!
Tension? Yes, I have tension at the minute! I think I will look out for another pattern. Thanks anyway.

It has to put up with my chunky hips. I work on a theory of scale!
Ive got a King Cole twister jacket pattern but it has a shawl collarso it doesnt come up to the neck. Im crocheting an aran jacket which is exactly the same style as yours too, but I realise you probably dont visit the dark side.

If you want to splash out Rowan's Country and Little Big Wool could work too.
Incidentally Big Wool is cheaper by the metre than the Sirdar Bigga. How's that happen?
