View Full Version : Sheffield - A nice place to be?
Interested on views from people living in Sheffield today.
Is it how I remember it, or has it changed? Does living there suit people or do people live there through jobs/family/ect?
My son moved back to Sheffield recently, and I still read 'The Star' online, which sends shivers down my spine when reading about all the bad stuff that happens there.
Is it a safe place to be compared to other cities?
thanks
I've lived here for over 20 years and whilst I'm not sure it's quite as 'safe' as when I first moved here, it's still amongst the safest of British cities.
I recently had the pleasure of reading the 'Derbyshire Times' and teh first 5 pages were an unmitigated list of human tragedies, assaults, rapes, death, etc.
Local newspapers thrive on this stuff, I'm afraid - whil;st bad stuff happens in all cities, you really need to move beyond the newspapers to get the real feel for a place.
Like many people, I moved here initially for a year and am still here.

Thanks for that Joe:)
It is so easy to get drawn in by the media and it doesn't loook good. I hear that Nottingham also has quite a reputation as being a 'dangerous city'. I just feel glad that I opted out - but sad at the same time as part of me is still in sheffield.
I've also been here for around 20 years, and I don't honestly feel the city is any more dangerous or crime-ridden than it was back then. Gun crime has increased, but that's hardly unique to Sheffield. Obviously, as with any big city, there are areas where you need to have your wits about you and be sensibly cautious, particularly after dark, but I'd agree with JoeP that, all things told, it remains one of, if not the, safest big cities in the UK. I've never felt the 'edge' here that I've felt at times in cities such as Manchester, Leeds and Bristol, and you're right that Nottingham's reputation is also much worse than Sheffield's nowadays.
I'm originally from York, which most people would think of as a beautiful, quiet and peaceful place, but there are certain areas of that city, off the tourist track, which suffer just as much from crime, poverty, violence and drugs as the areas of Sheffield which are routinely slated as hellholes.
I've also lived here for 20 years and I really like Sheffield.
My husband came to Sheffield from London 6 years ago and really loves it here.

Another twenty - odd years here!
I love this city. Of course there's crime, but I can honestly say that despite a couple of brushes with it over the years I feel safe and happy that this is a good place to raise my children.
I'd suggest you give over with the Star - if you read that every day you'd come to the conclusion we're a city under siege. Even in the areas often regarded as 'troubled' most of the time most of the people are good people who try and lead decent lives.
I'm another person who came here to study and liked it so much I stayed - I believe there are many others in that position too.

The Derbyshire Times is priceless, it's the Daily Mail of local newspapers.
Wherever this excitement and controversy happens, I don't get to know about it!!!

Rule 1, Ignore 1/2 of what the papers say. Don't forget that all they want to do is sell newspapers. Good news doesn't usually sell, bad news and horror stories do.
Rule 2, Assume that the other 1/2 of what the papers say is factually incorrect. The press are great at spicing up stories to make them more readable. I know this from experience.
Sheffield's a great place to live. Of course there's bad people doing bad things but then that applies to every town / city in the land, or probably in the world. We're a friendly lot (mostly) and don't suffer fools gladly. We're usually outspoken and honest. And we have Henderson's relish, which on its own is a great reason for living here. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
Strange how a lot of us moved here 20 years ago.......what was going off that prompted us all to move here I wonder.:suspect:
Bladesman 11-10-2007, 10:13 It is an alright place to live.
It is not the best place by any means but then again not many places are.
I feel safe when I go out despite some of the stuff I read.
I've lived in Nottingham and spent a year or so in the Moss Side / Whalley Range area of Manchester.
I've also worked in Leeds a lot - in terms of 'feeling safe' I'd order them as:
Sheffield
Leeds = Nottingham
Manchester
There's an 'edge' to Leeds and Nottingham that I don't feel in Sheffield.
Dazzler67 11-10-2007, 11:00 Hi.. I have only lived in sheffield for 8 years.. moved up from London. I think Sheffield is a wonderful place. The regneration in the city centre is excellent and there is some great beauty in the outlying areas. Of course there are problems, the bad areas and this is the same for any big inner city. Is is safe? Yes, to a degree. You will always have idiots and they cannot be catered for 24/7. Serious crime - gun crime, murder etc.. is rare albeit many serious incidents go unreported as they happen between gangs/groups who insist on dealing with things their own way. It is a good place, a safe place.. could be better and safer but where couldnt be?
Ive lived in sheffield all my life, and yes, you do hear more about crime these days, but as someone as already said, it happens everywhere, its just that the media tend to talk more about it nowadays, ive always felt safe living here, nothings changed.
I have lived in Sheffield for 35 years, and love it. I moved back "darn sarf" in '94 and came back in '99, hated it. Like most have said yes there is crime and violence but in relation to how many people live in this fair city it is minimal compared with some places like Manchester.
fox20thc 11-10-2007, 16:26 Lived here all my life apart from a spell in London and a stint in Hampshire.
London was edgy (as JoeP so succinctly put it) and Hants was just very very dull.
Sheffield is great, I also suggest you stop feeding your imagination with the ramblings of the star as the bad news story will always take precedence over the good (as with all newspapers)
Sheffield rocks :headbang: and has only got better in the 20 years I've experienced it. I'll agree with the previous posters about the increase in crime, but that is the case nationally, and it still doesn't feel edgy in the majority of the city. It has an awful lot going for it in terms of the people, culture, entertainment, parks, proximity to the Peak District, etc. Guess the only downside is how far away it is from a sea view!

Thanks to all posters - for taking time out to reply.:)
My family are still in Sheffield - and they seem to like it - so it can't be all that bad.
And I will stop reading the Star's horror stories on crime ridden Sheffield.
I moved here 1 year and ten months ago after searching some time for somewhere to live. I wanted to get out of London because of overcrowding, crime, traffic, etc. etc.
I first visited Sheffield four years ago and must say I looked around and decided this was a place I could live. So I did some research and finally settled here. I love this city, it has a nice vibe bout it and people are friendly and nice.
My only gripe is that I have been applying for jobs up here for two years and have only had two interviews both of which were unsuccessful. Don't understand why it is so hard when I have City of London experience working in law, financial services and IT services. I seem to be able to get jobs in London so have to keep going back there. It is so frustrating!
bigflesh 13-10-2007, 02:55 as of 03.53am on 13.10.07 it's a great place to be. for a start it's not raining and there is a general good private sector investment funding withn the city centre. You don't get that in Emmerdale!
