Sure.

A bunch of men in tight shirts grab each other a bit.

Just when it looks like something good might happen, they stop playing.

I know that the general principle of the thing is to work the ball down the field and deposit it over the line at the other end, and that, in order to squelch this programme, each side is allowed to commit a certain amount of assault and battery and do things to its fellow man which, if done elsewhere, would result in fourteen days without the option, coupled with some strong remarks from the bench.

Well, the general idea is indeed to carry the ball over the try-line at the other end; failling that, to kick it between the goalposts (and above the crossbar) either from a drop-kick, or after being awarded a penalty. You can't pass the ball forwards. You can't hold on to it after being tackled, so you try to turn to face your own players and put it behind you, otherwise the opposition can pick it up.

Territorial position is more important than actual possession of the ball, a lot of the time; unlike in soccer, to be down near your opponents' goal line and they have the ball, than to have the ball but be stuck near your own goal line. That's why frequently, teams will try to progress by punting the ball downfield and out of play.

Incredibly, the crowd perform in a very similar way to the athletes on show. So watch whatever takes your fancy really!

Finding somewhere that shows it may be a bit harder than you think.....

For one of the pool matches I went to:
Walkabout - shut for refurb
Common room - showing football on the only tellies you can see when sat down
DQ's - gone
Pomona - fuzzy picture and bl**dy Dizzee Rascal on the stereo (and the person who knew how to shut him up and route the TV sound into the PA wasn't in that day)
Nursery Tavern - footy only
Champs - one tiny 14" telly with rugby on. Completely impractical to watch
Varsity - soccer only

Ended up back on my sofa, with the ability to pause/rewind and cheap cold beer!

If anyone can think of somewhere good to watch it, I'm there. ATM I'm thinking Yew Tree may be my best bet, or back on my sofa.

Our England’s heart is sound as oak;
Our English will is firm;
And through our actions Freedom spoke
In history’s proudest term:
When Blake was lord from shore to shore,
And Cromwell rul’d the land,
And Milton’s words were shields of power
To stay the oppressor’s hand.

Our England’s heart is yet as sound,
As firm our English will;
And tyrants, be they cowl’d or crown’d,
Shall find us fearless still.
And though our Vane be in his tomb,
Though Hampden’s blood is cold,
Their spirits live to lead our doom
As in the days of old.

Our England’s heart is stout as oak;
Our English will as brave
As when indignant Freedom spoke
From Eliot’s prison grave.
And closing yet again with Wrong,
A world in arms shall see
Our England foremost of the strong
And first among the free.

:clap:Fantastic bring on Argentina ;)

Absolutely brilliant - refreshing to see sportsmen who care for their game, and each other. The only time we see tears from players at Bramall Lane is when they have to do half an hours extra training - poor souls.

Roll on the final - should be amazing whoever we play.

They havnt beaten us in owt important since 1066!

Apart from kicking our collective asses behind Jeanne Darc in 1431.

And booting us out of their land entirely in 1453.

And squashing us flat in 1779 to leave the USA a clear run to independence.

And ... oh, I can't even remember how many times they've hammered us at rugby in the last thirty years alone; as well as beating us in various football championships recently.

Did you have a point?

Spruce

I cant believe you went to all the trouble to check and find what they have beaten us at in the last thousand years. Thats really pathetic. lol.

Im interested now. Apart from those few any more juicy nuggets?

I didn't need to check. I have the luxury of being given a basic elementary education which means I know this stuff already. Shame you werne't, really; it would save you from posting garbage.

For anyone looking to find somewhere to endure the Final on Saturday, we went to the Royal Standard opposite the old Focus DIY on St Mary's Rd which was good - fairly big screen, not packed but good atmosphere, with Moonshine on tap (and Black Sheep when we had drunk all that x)
Brilliant evening x

It could still be packed with Unitedites as we play Preston at home in the afternoon.

Can anybody explain why club rugby is still going on whilst the England team are still in the world cup. Seems a bit unfair to the teams with a lot of international players

I think it's symptomatic of the fact that rugby is a lot harder. Both the players and the clubs.

Loose a few stars for the greater national good is accepted in Union, but whined about in Assoociation.
