I know generally that the latter is re-writable but in terms of a mini dvd camcorder, does the rw mean you can "rewind" and "tape" over something - i.e. edit and r means you cannot. I've heard you have to 'finalise' the dvd when you get to the end - does this mean you can 'edit' on either rw or r but once finalised r is final whereas rw you can completely write over.

If you can edit during recording on either, then I suppose r's will be fine cause I wont want to copy over, say, holiday clips.

Thanks very much

r = record once
rw = rewritable

Whether you can erase the RW disc in the camera depends on your camera model.

generally, an 'r' means you record it, thats it your done.. finalise it and you play it in other dvd players..

the 'rw' means you can play it, edit and over-record it, but cannot play it in other players until you finalise, -- ALSO if you finalise you can copy it to a normal DVD later, and then re-format and re-use the 'rw' disk..

Can dvd be turned into mpeg files on my pc? I.e. so that I could paste a number of files/mini dvd's together to create a larger movie - to fit on a larger capacity dvd. Or can I copy several mini dvd's onto 1 normal dvd?

you could use a 'dvd ripper' to get the mpg's onto your pc, then some software to edit them / stick them together..
