View Full Version : Owler lane infants school 1963
I attended owler lane infants about 1963 till 1965. I have a christmas photo of lots of little christmas angels. Is the school still running? I then attended Grimesthorpe middle school, same area Shefield 4, one of my teachers was a Mr. Platt, I cannot find any upto date info on these schools I left Sheffield in 1968, but I have a weekend booked in Feb. and would love to revisit these places.
Gleighton 27-01-2005, 20:57 Hi Chuckie,You probably left as I went to Grimesthorpe. I was in the last year that went there before we went to Whitways School just off Margate Drive. My Father still lives in Grimesthorpe and I visit him regulary, have most of my school reports and some pictures that I've taken of Grimesthorpe since. Let me know If I can do anything. By the way I've got one of those photo's too they must have done the same thing every year. Gwyneth.
Hi Gwyneth,
Thankyou for your reply. Did you go to Owler Lane Infants school and Grimesthorpe junior. My memory is not that hot, I am hoping that when I return to Sheffield that it will all come back to me, hope I can still find my way around.
I used to live on Southwell Road. I am expecting big changes.
Is Owler Lane and Grimesthorpe school still there?
I will try and scan my photo of the angels.
I would be grateful of any upto date info on this area.
Yours
annette
Gleighton 28-01-2005, 20:01 yes I went to owler lane and Grimesthorpe school. My Dad lives on Skelwith rd still and I used to live on Upwell street. Owler Lane school is now no more. It has been knocked down and a new school was built on the Wensley estate. Grimesthorpe seems very empty now just a few house left on Earl Marshal rd.Grimesthorpe school is still there although not as a school. The bowling green, the Ball and the Sheffield Arms are still there. Let me think, I'll see if any of my photos will scan and I'll send you a personal e-mail.
Gleighton 28-01-2005, 20:09 sorry chuckie can't get in touch with you it says you don't want to have personal e-mails on the message board.if you click on my name you should be able to e-mail me and i'll send you the photos.
Hi gwyneth I cannot e.mail you until I have five posts on the message board. Tried clicking onto you name but still cant get your e.mail address. Still very interested in your info. This is so frustrating. Is Grimesthorpe school still there?
Gleighton 31-01-2005, 11:53 yep chuckie i'ts still there as big as ever. Have sent you a personal message. Am dying to e-mail the pictures to you. It's funny that your history can be tied up to something when I started doing my family history I found out that my grandma went there too.
Hi Gwyneth I look forward to seeing your photo's. I wonder if we will be able to find our way round, things are going to be so different I left in 1968 when I was 10 years old. My grandparents live in Eckington, although we visit them this will be my first time back to Grimesthorpe. What is the old building now?
Gleighton 31-01-2005, 22:47 last I heard It was a youth training centre. Funny thing Is I remember they shut It down because It was subsideing. Obviously thought more about us than they do about them.lol.
I attended Owler Lane from 1956 to 1959. Pop Gregory was the HM. I remember Fred Gladsby, Boardman, Holmes, Moss and McDonald was my teacher in the 1st form. Mrs Fairest was the history teacher. Albert Lupton, ex Royal Marine was the PT teacher. I was caned in front of the whole school for not doing my homework. I left there Xmas 1959 to join the Royal Navy as a boy entrant, I eventually completed 15 years service and then travelled the world again working as a civillian. My last post was at the Northern General Hospital. I moved from Sheffield in Sept. 04 and now live in beautiful Kent. I was born and bred in Hillsborough.
I was at Owler Lane Infants from 1963-1967. We lived at the top of Hinde Street in the prefabs. When they were pulled down we relocated to Longley and I changed schools. One year probably 1964/1965 I was the Angel Gabriel in the nativity so I may be one of the angels in your pics. I still have a couple of school pics, unfortunately no scanner so cannot let you see them. The area hasn't changed that much over the years, with the exception of the Wensley estate being built and the school moving to new purpose built premises9mainly to make it larger to accomodate children from the estate). P.S I remember one of the teachers was called Mrs Parrot.
Gleighton 28-02-2005, 08:30 Does anybody remember Mrs. Oxspring Roberts. She's on the photograph that I have. I believe her daughter went to the school at the same time that I did.I was quite shocked when I saw where Owler lane used to be. It looks so empty.
I attended Owler Lane Infants from 1955-57 and then went on to Grimesthorpe County Junior School from Sep 1957 to July 1961.
The teachers I vaguely remember from Owler Lane Infants school were Miss Hawksworth the headmistress, Mrs.Taylor, Miss White and Mrs Singleton.
Gleighton 01-03-2005, 08:05 Miss Hawksworth was still there when I was going , at least up to 1967.
Miss White was my teacher...I also remember "yellow magic"...for your knees if you fell in the school yard....I remember my very first day at school here...like it was yesterday....

Hi Geotom,
Did Jackie Davis have a brother called Malcolm?

Hi Gritman,
I remember Vic Betts, he was in my class at Grimesthorpe, I've often wondered what happened to him. Used to see him in the Canon Hall after we left school.
Hi
Mr Gathercole was my grandfather - he died when I was 4, so I don't really remember him, other than he seemed really strict. Would love to hear any stories you have of him, good or bad! I have just moved to sheffield in the last 18 months, so it has awakened an interest in the family history!
Thanks
Fiona
Grit Man 06-06-2006, 22:09 Hello Dors,
Just been speaking to a mate of mine in the pub(John Martin--(Albert),He says Vic Betts is still working as a fabrication engineer, and lives out towards swinton/mexboro area.Johnny martin also went to Owler Lane.
Does anybody remember Mrs. Oxspring Roberts. She's on the photograph that I have. I believe her daughter went to the school at the same time that I did.I was quite shocked when I saw where Owler lane used to be. It looks so empty.
Had quite a surprise seeing a mention of Mrs Oxspring Roberts. She is the only teacher I remember from Owler Lane. I've tried working it out and I was in her class (room 1) in around 1968. Referring back to your earlier emails in this thread we followed the same path through school (e.g. I was at Grimesthorpe Juniors for 1 yr then moved to the freshly built Whiteway Middle - ended up being a 2nd year twice).
I remember things like when they tarmaced the top playground and painted hopscotch grids and other games. Also about the dentist that was located in the bottom yard in the arches and some scary story about dragon living under the building - god knows where that came from.
I go back to Sheffield every so often as my parents are still there. They've had a birds eye view of the changes as they only live across the road from what was Owler Lane School (they could have at least left the tree that was in the top playground).
Hello again Gritman. Is that the John Martin who lived at the corner of Holywell and Southwell ?
Hello Biscuit. Your mention of the dentist in the bottom yard at Owler Lane brought some unpleasant memories back, I was terrified of the place. If the postman brought a card with a yellow corner it meant an extraction, a green corner meant a filling. The door from the waiting room to the surgery was soundproofed to quieten the screams. Oh happy days.
Grit Man 08-06-2006, 22:34 Hello Cat 631,
Its not cat,but i do remember him i think it was the 1st house on southwell that he lived at.
The John martin i,m refering to used to live on rectory terrace near to richmond road garage, shall we say,( born on the wrong side of the lights,)
He used to be the landlord of The Old Bowling Green up to around 6yrs
ago, then went to the Rising Sun on Jenkin road.
Thanks Gritman, I'm not much of a detective. Is Rectory Terrace off Upwell St. just before the railway bridge. If it is, I went to Owler Lane with Ann Dawson who lived there. Does anyone remember her?
Hi Geotom,
Did Jackie Davis have a brother called Malcolm?
Hi dors yes he did, they are relatives of mine, but have lost touch with them,
they moved to the Chesterfield area.
Hi, my dad says how are you going on porky???
Hi lolalola, it must be 5or 6 years since I last saw your dad, give my best regards.
wendywoo3 31-01-2010, 16:00 I went to Owler Lane infants about 1966 I started. I remember Mrs Oxpring Roberts and Mrs Perrot. My brother was in both their classes. Mrs Perrot - I always found her a bit daunting but years later 1985 I moved back to the area for a while and my daughter went to the same school...as I was one of the 'old' pupils I was invited to attend the then heads leaving assembly Carol something? I as a parent...IT WAS MY OLD HEAD! She started the same week I did I remember her saying to me we were both new to the school. Mrs perrot was still there and asked me to help in her class as a parent...weird,, then years later I worked as a nursery nurse in the now newly built Owler Lane infants still called and has the original old bell in the playground! Who should be there helping out...a very fragile old lady...turned out to be Mrs Perrot!! I also was in last year to go to Grimesthorpe Juniors as we had new Whiteways built for us....meant we nw had to stay an extra year..din't bother me I was in no hurry to go to Earl Marshal Comp!
oldiegirl 01-02-2010, 20:29 Hi dors,
I also went to owler Lane and Grimesthorpe the same time as you.
I remember at infant school we had lessons outside under the big tree. also I have a picture which must be around whitsuntide as it is of all of us in white and there is a school captain and queen.
At Grimesthorpe I had Mr mason for a teacher, is he the one who used to get us to do mental arithmetic with a pack of cards or was that Mr Gathercole?
