Aww they look fab xxhunniixx and yes, soon as I get home I will upload more Ashia kitty pics. They havent opened their eyes yet but are getting bigger and cuter everyday. Mum is really taking to her new role - and daddy Charlie finally got to see them last night (under sufferance). Don't think he was that impressed to be honest, but Ashia gave him a big sloppy kiss as soon as she saw him.

Not sure if any of my three will be available now- we're definitely keeping one, our friend Donna has been promised one and we may have found a loving home for kitty3, but will keep you all posted.

Well, did you dafoot? We've now got 2 pairs of eyes open and the little dark tabby is blinking and nearly ready to open (they're late developers, these norwegians). Now that we've got the daft dobe's bite sorted, perhaps I'll have more time to devote to taking kitty photos. Mind you, have then got to figure out how to upload- just when I thought I'd got it sussed , other half shifts the PC back to the attic n I'm using the laptop- so many holes to shove a cardreader into n I dunno which one I'm sposed to be using...technology!

Thanks for the offer dafoot- other half is my usual tech support when I can pin him down (you know what it's like- everyone else finds out he's a dab hand n the phone never stops ringing- especially when another flaming virus crops up. When he stops faffing with ebay in the attic, I'll nab him. We were hoping to build a kitten run to move the little uns n mum into this weekend but time flew, dramaqueen needed plenty of grapes peeling as she lounged on the sofa giving us the 'you don't know how much I've suffered' expression n dismantling the PC cupboard n carting it up 2 flights of stairs then rearranging the attic to sir's liking, sort of finished off the weekend for us. Maybe later this week. They'll need something to keep them confined and safe from dobermutt n bungle for a while -and we'd quite like our bathroom back - plus, Ashia is getting stir crazy up there.

A few more photos of the developing furries. Two out of three have their eyes open now- the third keeps opening them then getting them gunged up again despite my best efforts to keep them clean.

Little sweeties hunnii! Have you found homes for them all yet- you shouldnt have any problems, they look so cute.

2 of mine are def spoken for and the other is more or less but to be honest they'll look so cute it wont be a problem homing number 3 anyway - wherever it goes i want it to be an indoor cat only. Havent decided which one to keep myself yet- still not entirely sure if they're boys or girls - they kind of object everytime we pick em up to inspect...but we think they all look the same, whatever they are.

One is very dark tabby tiger with a stripey white chest and the other two are pale grey and dark tabby with white paws n chests. The precocious one is grey n tabby - this is the one that gets to the milk before the others, tries to shove em out of the way, keeps exploring the nest n peering over the side -and last night rolled over onto its back again and played tappy-tap with my fingers. Cute!

We've just ordered a dog crate off evil-bay to create a safe kitten pen for the next few weeks, seeing as the mental doberman keeps barking at them and trying to chase Ashia (as if she's forgotten who she is!). Better to be safe than sorry, we dont want them to get hurt and they can't live in the bathroom forever. Only just got rid of my 2 dog crates too -have gone for the biggest size so that i can threaten the doberman with it if she misbehaves...

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/Kittens101.jpg

This morning I had to watch my step in the living room - they've JUST started wandering from behind the sofa- 3 wobbly little fluffies all peering at me from ground level - will have to keep an eye to to make sure Ailsa isnt around when they come trotting out tonight- she'd flatten em in a second bouncing on and off the sofa like she usually does...

May start weaning tonight- make some 'mush' up for them and see how that goes down.

katkin
31-10-2007, 12:49
They will be if Ailsa leaves them alone...She still hasnt grasped that they're baby cats, they sound awfully like her stuffed acrylic 'kittens' and we've had to call them 'babies' rather than 'kittens', to be on the safe side.

Brilliant! I read somewhere to try a corner litter tray like the ones you can buy for rabbits, if kittens seem to want to go somewhere quiet like behind the tv at first.

What have you been feeding them, hunnii? We've been advised to try mushed up tuna fish or finely diced chickenand/or soaked mushed dried kitten food such as the Royal Cain 34 mixed with some Lactol or Cimicat solution to start with- served at room temperature. Yum.

Solo had a go at licking a bit of tuna from Ashia's dish last week and Sugar had a tiny bit of jelly from Ash's food this morning, so reckon we should give it a go tonight or tomorrow. Have got them a little litter tray n scoop.

I'm having fun trying to work out what sex they are as well- all the diagrams on the internet are a bit vague and to me, they all look the same -probably all females or all males - but right now, I can't decide... Plus, they howl if we try to pick em up to inspect for too long.

Would you really? That would be very kind Meds! I really havent a clue and the other half hasn't either. I don't think it's going to be an issue for the 2 people who're having the other kittens (or us, once we've made our minds up which one we're keeping), but it would be useful to know sooner rather than later, so we can give them proper names... Any tips on weaning also gratefully received xK

Hi katkin.

My usual weaning regime is to start at about 4 or 5 weeks (guided by how interested the babies are in mum's food) with a little saucer of mushed up Nature's Diet kitten food that has hot water and some Cimicat in to make up to a consistency like a soup.

It has to be a saucer or a flat plate because they won't put their whiskers in a bowl until they're used to it, and to start with only give them a couple of spoons full of meat then mix and mash until you have something really liquid. The warm water makes it all really smelly and interesting.

Then all you do is to scruff the little ones (sounds cruel but really it just stops them struggling) with one hand and with the other hand just push their mouth open and paint a little of the mush on their tongue. They'll splutter a bit and make all sorts of faces whilst they lick it all round their mouths, then hopefully they'll make up their minds that it's really nice and let you do it again. This is the step that will take a bit of time- if you start too early they won't be able to move the food to the back of their mouths and swallow, so just try again in a few days.

Sooner or later they will really get into the idea of this 'kitten soup' and you can get them closer and closer to their saucer, then you take your hand away entirely and just put the soup down and let them get on with it.

If you're lucky and you've pitched it at the right time, they will only need one go at this and will wean more or less instantly- then all you do is reduce the amount of water, Cimicat and mashing over the course of a week or so and then move them onto Canin Babycat biscuits gradually.

Job done, happy healthy (if slightly mucky when they walk in it) kittens!

You must remember to stick them in the litter tray directly after eating though- they'll all go straight after eating for the first week or two.

31-10-2007, 15:37
Cheers Medusa, we'll give that a go xk

I'm determined to take lots of photos now so that I never forget just how cute they were as babies. Forgot to add- Gemima and Fishpole came over weekend before last and verified all 3 are boys. They look far too pretty to be boys, but there you go. We're keeping Arnie but Solo is such a lovely little thing and always makes a beeline for me, just like his mum Ashia did as a baby when I had to decide which kitten to take - but I can't keep them all and at least I'll get to see him often as he grows up- he's going to my mate Donna. Don't know yet how her other cats are going to take to the mini intruder but if he is anything like as affectionate as his mum, he will soon win them over. We're keeping fingers crossed the little girl who visits my neighbour will be able to take Sugar - her dad wants her to but it all depends. But if that doesnt work out, we have another loving home lined up.

Oh and I'd better start pointing the camera at the barmy bengal again soon, otherwise he will go into an almighty sulk...

Can't bear to think about it...Even though we've agreed to keep Arnie, everytime Solo jumps up and purrs in my face I just melt!

Oh- Ailsa is still being a pain with them- she cant be trusted to behave around them and we have to keep a short lead on her when we let her in, otherwise she tries to thump them or growls in a nasty way. She's always been great with every other kitten we brought home but for some reason, she has a thing about Ash and her babies...

Charlie is getting more brave every day- now, he trots in every night and sits in front of the fire with his little uns- but he gets a bit worried when they all start ganging up on him!

They're really beautiful babies katkin- what a dedicated mum Ashia has been.

I'm typing this with my 2 foster kittens purring on my chest. Letting them go is always hard, but when you see how happy they are in their new homes it makes it all worth it.

katkin

She's been a sweetie!

I know they'll be going to good homes and I'll get to see Solo often enough- his new mum has 3 other cats and when she has to work out away from Sheffield or goes on hols, her cats come to stay with us, so Solo will be back before we know it! Dont suppose he'll remember us or his mum, though - cats are funny like that. I know they werent planned, but we've really enjoyed having them with us right from birth. They're leaping about like loonies now, shredding the houseplants (all moved out of the way now but probably beyond salvaging...) and even though they are aware that the big daft dobermutt doesnt lovethem, they will insist on trotting through the dog gate into the kitchen to sit behind her whilst she's waiting to be fed (and then I have to surrepticiously grab Ailsa's collar and wave to the 3 demons to 'shoo' back into the living room whilst trying not to draw attention to them...).

Alfie wandered in last night, grumbling as usual - and was most put out because they were all playing with HIS Panic Mouse. (Every toy, every bed and everything belongs to Alfie, or so he thinks). He told them (in cat lnaguage of course) in no uncertain terms to SCRAM and then spent the next half hour playing with the panic mouse just to prove he still does- and ended up (as he usually does) running off with the fluffy mouse. He never grows up!

Daft dobe hasnt got a tail- she's docked but it doesnt stop her giving her stump a darn good waggy when she's excited, though. It's her big fat feet and snapping jaws theyve got to watch out for...

No, she's being a lot of a monster with the furries so far and not to be trusted, which has really suprised us because she's always been fine with the other kittens when we've introduced them at 13 weeks. I suspect these 3 are still too small and interesting and she doesnt consider them to be tiny cats, more like fluffy bunnies or tree-rats (squirrels). We keep trying to condition her to the 'babies' but no luck so far. Solo doesnt understand the concept of fear though- he keeps wanting to be friends with Ailsa!

It's going to be tough when we get down to only one kitten...Solo http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/Soloat8wks.jpg is destined to join 'Aunty Donna' and her 3 older mogs just before Christmas - and there's a strong possibility Sugar http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/Sugarat8wks.jpg will be adopted by a fellow cat-lover named Stephanie in the New Year.

aww sorry to hear that angelblueyes. Will bear that in mind but think Sugar/Kaboos has got a definite home now after Christmas and we're hanging onto Arnie. Solo has gone to his new home and has already settled in with his new big brothers and sister. Missing the little guy though...

Few more piccies of the kittens posted on Alfie's Blog (see link below this message) - Kaboos (Sugar as was) left us 2nd Jan 08, Solo 22nd Dec 07 and I'm glad I took lots of photos to remember them all by, they're growing up so quickly already and as for Arnie - I can't believe how gorgeous he's turning out- he looks like a little long haired spotty snow leopard now. Which reminds me, I must trim his claws tonight- he used the other half as a ladder this morning, trying to copy his new found friend Alfie the barmy bengal jumping on top of the shower cubicle...Ouch!

Well done to their mum and you, their human mum for taking care of them. They really are gorgeous. Must have been really hard to let them go.

They are so beautiful Katkin, makes me want another. Our little kitty is 6 months old now and is a real terror lol. I miss the little baby faces though :(

Thanks for the lovely feedback. I've enjoyed every moment of it and so has the other half- I think he was the one who didnt want to let go, more than me- I was the sensible one, for once! I'll see Solo often (and he'll be back to stay soon) and Kaboos' new mum says she'll keep me informed of his progress. Ashia has started sleeping curled up close to Arnie now, she must be thinking I'm going to give him away next - but no chance of that!

Well, we went to see Solo this weekend and he's huge already -and highly mischievous. No photos yet but I'm sure they'll follow. He is besotted with his big brother Taz but his other new brother and sister arent as enamoured with him yet...
Also had a call from Kaboos' new mum and he's settled in nicely too - also into chewing houseplants (I blame Charlie for that and Ashia the Norwegian Florist Cat) and I'm looking forward to seeing him again in the next couple of months once he's got used to wearing his harness and venturing out with mum.

Meanwhile, Arnie the purrminator is looking very grown up http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/IMGP2857.jpg This was taken last week aged 15 weeks. Tonight he'll be 16 weeks exactly and off to the vets with his daft dobermutt big sister for his vaccs and her booster. Won't that be a joyful journey!

Yup- we tried our lot on them so that they could venture into the garden when we go out there-Alfie puts up with it the most. Some cats love to go walkies and there's one particular Norwegian Forest Cat (ULFIE) that goes away on UK touring holidays with his owners and he trots around on his harness and lead. Stephanie (Kaboos' mum) wants to get him used to travelling with her so he's not on his own too often.

Got to laugh- at the vets last night with Ailsa and Arnie: Arnie was a little star- put up with the needles, the prodding and poking, the indignity of the rectal thermometer AND the worming tablet. Came home, trotted out of the cat carrier and went in search of food and mum. What a tough little guy!

Ailsa the daft dobermutt, meanwhile promptly threw up on the doormat the minute she got home. Big wuss.
