View Full Version : Laptop That Just Won't Turn On – Can you help please?
Hi There
I would be really grateful for any help/advice that you might be able to offer me on my problem. If you can help or if your willing to fix/suggest someone that can - please PM me!!
The Problem
When I turn my laptop on it starts to load as it would do normally. After it has opened up and Windows has started the icons on the desktop and start bar change colour, the page freezes the laptop then proceeds to beep and then eventually shuts itself off.
I have then turned the laptop on again, however this time I started it in “safe mode”, despite this the laptop decided to shut itself down and then beep.
Since this has happened I haven’t been able to even get as far as being able to start it in safe mode.
I have no idea what caused this – whether it’s an e-mail attachment or something from a website – but if anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated.
If you would be willing to repair the damage or recommend someone to me that could fix it for a reasonable price then I would be very interested to hear from you.
Many Thanks
Tom
i'd have a look for free, but i'm in mansfield...........
if you get no one closer, shout us.
neeeeeeeeeek 08-10-2007, 16:33 if you switch it on adn enter the bios (f2 or del or what ever) and leave it does it turn off? also try booting of the xp CD and running the recovery console. If it does not stuf off it could well just be a s/w problem or something. If it does shut off it could be overheating..
Thanks for your comments guys - i'll try and if i have any more problems I will give you a shout
daughters got a packard bell laptop - and it suddenyl won't start.
worked fine then shut it down and now it won;t start at all.
anyone any idea.
it's not showing any lights when plug is in. (battery was knackered before so it never worked off that ).
Buckiboy 25-11-2007, 16:43 Seems like overheating. You should clean fans inside the laptop. If you dont get any lights on, it might also be a power supply problem or connection inside laptop.

Buckiboy 25-11-2007, 17:14 Does the "inverter" have a light when it is plugged in?

Buckiboy 25-11-2007, 20:16 Then you should check with multimeter.

jibbs1977 27-11-2007, 13:36 I had a packard bell laptop never get one again ive had 2 new mother boards fans infact everything nearly and I have had to get new charger too so I wouldnt go near a packard bell again. Specialy not from pc world cos the tech guys are rubbish and if you get a guaruntee from them they will only replace what ever the problem is but will never replace the actual laptop/pc unless its sent back more than 5 times in 6 months.

yes i changed the connections, and tested the inverter bit with a torch bulb and all that stuff.
it just won't turn on.
if the battery is dead, will that stop the machine working? i don't think it will but some bright spark said it could be that.
terminator 27-11-2007, 16:14 If the batt is dead then there is a maybe it wouldnt turn on if your not able to get a charge through i just finnised doing one of these it was a diode stopping the current going to the system board cant you get a workshop diagram and check the board with a meter.Sorry not much help i tend to stay away when possible dont mind a pc but hate doing laptops.
anybody any idea who can have a look at it and potentially repair it?

Sounds like the power supply board has gone.
Does it boot at all off mains? I'm guessing not seeing as no lights are on when plugged in?
Usually happens when the board is shorted as my other half found out when she plugged the connector in the wrong way round and fried it...:hihi:
new power board and all was well.
