Ok, so we've done rough areas, where's a nice area to live? I currently live at Manor but we are looking to move due to some maintenance issues that the agent has been dithering over for ages. Other than this problem, I quite like our little house but its been going on so long that we are getting ready to give up.

We need somewhere with parking- either car park, or driveway/garage. I really like Eccleshall road area but all the properties seem to be for students only or bloomin' expensive. So many houses seem to be on main roads with on-street parking only.

Where's a nice area, convenient in terms of getting around the City, and reasonably priced to rent?! Or am I just asking way too much? I know some might argue that this should be in property section but I want peoples views, not loads of adverts thrust at me.....

Dore used to be part of Derbyshire, so it's probably the poshest place in Sheffield.

Just before the Ecclesall area theres Fox House, which is quite remote, lots of countryside and not many houses.

Theres also Rivelin on the edge of Sheffield, not bad either.

I think nice areas in Sheffield is quite subjective.

I love Bradfield, Bolsterstone and Oughtibridge where I live.

If you are after somwhere alittle closer to a town type centre I think there are some nice areas in and around Hillsborough which are reasonably priced.

If you like where you are try lower down City Road. Sky Edge Rd (not all off road parking) or Holding etc (off Granville).

I live in Loxley so agree with a pp Hilsborough is a good area if you want the location near city centre.

We live in Netherthorpe, we get a drive, a garden and a police helicopter watching over us every night for a very reasonable sum!

Whirlow is very nice (don't be put off by the neighbouring 'sink' estates of Dore and Millhouses).

Speaking from bitter experience you'd be better off sticking in S2 than looking off Ecclesall Road. I had to suffer several burglaries, car thefts, mates being attacked, vandalism, a football riot, and countless sleepless nights before I wised up and shipped out. Plus my insurance is HALF the cost in S2! If you're talking top end of Ecclesall Road, i.e. Banner Cross, then you're talking a LOT of money to live there, in other words completely unrealistic.

Agree about lower end of City Road - I once put a bid in for a house on Norfolk Park Ave...runs along the top edge of the park - absolutely terrific house, garage on the road behind, but no road in front! Just a narrow footpath between the front garden wall and the park wall.
Gutted when our house sale fell through, and the vendor decided to take the next offer down 'cos they were in (by then) a rush to sell....

I live a stone's throw from Endcliffe, Bingham and Botanical Gardens parks. All lovely areas but I agree with PPs, very expensive. Banner Cross is cheap in comparison! I wanted to buy around Hunters Bar but so few of the houses have any decent outdoor space.

It's Sheffield - there are no nice areas.

You make it sound like it's down town Kingston or something, it's really not a very rough place to live atall in comparison with alot of places on Earth.

I would say that area is a good choice as well. I have delivered to just about every road in S2 and they are some of the most pleasant, with the added bonus of not being full of traffic as they are just off the main roads. The other side of Granville road is nice as well - Norfolk Road, Fitzwalter Road etc. There are a lot of students in these areas but as I deliver before lunchtime i've never seen one :hihi:

I have lived in S12 (Hackenthorpe) for 21 years and have never had a single problem or experienced any crime whatsoever. House prices are very reasonable still, in fact they are suprisingly cheap for what I would consider a relatively trouble free area.

Looks like I'm not allowed to say that Sheffield isn't a nice place to live - my post to that effect has been removed.

I didn't think it was such a contentious view that it had to be censored out. Let me explain - I come from the country originally, so to me any big industrial town is not going to be a nice place to live. I've been here nearly 20 years now, and I tolerate it, but I still don't like it. There are obviously some areas nicer than others, but if I had a completely free choice I wouldn't live in any of them either.

Look for Ecclesall, Millhouses, Whirlow, Dore, Totley, parts of Woodseats, Banner Cross etc.

If you avoid places like the Mannor, Gleadless, Upperthorpe, parts of Hillsborough etc. then you can't go too wrong.

How about Sharrow? Many nice terraces, often with decent-sized gardens, easy walking distance to City, parks, Botanical Gardens and Ecclesall Road - a really diverse area, lots of small streets with a neighbourly feel.

I live 2 mins away from Graves park, lovely walks, great views, easy access to town or Derbyshire countryside in the other direction.:)

Is that why it has been in the news twice this week for mysterious deaths?

Upperthorpe is better since they pulled Kelvin down but it is still as rough as a dogs arse.

Sorry got to be realistic.

I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree on that.

Upperthorpe is NOT rough in my opinion.. But you reckon it is, and that's your opinion which you're entitled to.

i also think upperthorpe is a bad area in my opinion , i lived there for a while, there was a problem with prostitutes, and druggies for a while ! now weather thats improved i dont know!
but reading the local paper the police raided flats in upperthorpe and found a massive drug den!!

i also agree with blusky that sum NOT ALL places around hillsborough are good areas! but thats my opinion

Everyone thinks their own area is lovely.
It is totally subjective. I live in Oughtibridge which I think is one of the nicest places in the city. I only live in a two-up-two-down terrace but every morning when I open the back door I stare at beautiful unspoilt countryside.

Other people may think Oughtie is a bit far out or old fashioned.

Like I say everyone has their own opinion.

I know upperthorpe has a lot of community organisations that people are involved with and I am sure there are people who think it is lovely. It is certainly a lot better than other areas.

But you cannot argue with crime stats and continued news coverage of prostitutes, death and drugs raids.

Blame the media.

I come from the countryside too. Might be more beautiful, but I was dying to escape! Sheffield's got to be the nicest city there is. I wouldn't dream of living in London, Manchester, Leeds etc - Sheffield is lots of small villages joined together - perfect for us ex-country folk!

I've only been living in Meersbrook for a few weeks but I really like it so far. The park is close by (although according to some reports that's not necessarily a good thing...), plenty of shops along Chesterfield Road and still an easy walk into town.

We live in a very spacious, 3 bed flat for the same price as a grotty studio in the city centre :D We had to view almost 30 rubbish places before we found it though; proof that it's always worth shopping around.

Banner Cross, then you're talking a LOT of money to live there, in other words completely unrealistic.

That is true the house 2 doors away from us has just been put on for sale at £475,000.

Although it is in a great area.

Have they completely demolished it and rebuilt it since I was in Sheffield?:o Top area and Upperthorpe don't normally appear in the same sentence.
