I have been asked to set up an ecommerce site, and have little knowledge of them.
Has anybody got any links
Software
Free carts and SSL?
Anything would be great. I just need a starting point really.
Cheers!

Take a look on www.freshmeat.net - there are several systems on there which are released under GPL (or something similar) most will be written in PHP or PERL over a database backend (most likely MySQL)

Free carts are 10 a penny:
osCommerce (http://www.oscommerce.org/) is one of the better known scripts for web based eCommerce, though is a bit of a pain to fully customise.
CubeCart (http://www.cubecart.com/site/home) is also free and is a little easier to customise.
SSL certificates are available from FreeSSL (http://www.freessl.com) and are reasonably priced ($39) - especially @ the moment with the US$ being almost worthless!
For other eCommerce scripts try HotScripts (http://www.hotscripts.com/) and search for ecommerce (in all/desired scripting language).

Or Zen Cart, which is based on OS Commerce, but easier to customise too.
See the link in my sig for secure hosting and certs - if budgets are tight all accounts come with SSL and use of a shared certificate.
