View Full Version : Meet my new baby Dumbo's.
It's not been long since I lost poor Indy but today I got two new baby Dumbo Rats.
Merry and Pippin (http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u49/monkeyloon/MerryandPippin001.jpg)
Merry is the larger of the two with the pink eyes.
They are tiny, despite the giant pic, and look so cute with their big round ears. Billy the cat is not amused, I just hope they take to him like Indy did.
Lspacehopper 06-10-2007, 18:00 Awww.... they're gorgeous....as a fellow ratty lover and owner I congratulate you on the new arrivals :)
Grim Reaper 06-10-2007, 18:01 Ooooh tiny ratties. :D
Lspacehopper 06-10-2007, 18:22 Couldn't resist, putting up some pics of my babies :) The 2nd and 3rd shots are of Maggie. She's my youngest and daughter to Marge, (grey and white rex). She is chinchilla coloured and her coat is amazing. I am not kidding when I say she changes colour from day to day. She started off light, went darker starting from the bottom and then gets lots of different patches of lighter colour. She's all marbled :)

Awww they are adorable, and have a sensible cage unlike my new boys who have to live in the pink palace:hihi:
I'm still trying to decide which toys to get them, Indy's old toys are being sterilised and I'm going to try to find them a good climbing branch tomorrow.
Moonbird 06-10-2007, 18:41 Mojo its the first time i have ever seen dumbo rats awww they are really cute
Lspacehopper your girls are gorgeous too , they look like they have tons to do and keep them entertained :)
I do love ratties and I miss keeping them, but I vowed to have any more because it was so upsetting when they died, I used to love the way they sit on your shoulder and chatter in your ear :hihi:

When you say pink palace, you don't mean the rotastak one, do you? Is it because the bars of the cage are pink?
I sound like the rat police sometimes, but it's because I'm ever conscious of how much room they actually need :)

Dumbo rats are gorgeous. They look dozy and I mean that in the nicest possible way lol ;)
My girls are spoiled and cost me a fortune in new toys and snuggles. They know they've got their mum wrapped round their little claws lol

Pink bars, I hate rotastack with a passion. I'm a bit of a rat police member aswell:hihi:. So many people just get them and ignore them or buy them for a child thinking they are just big hamsters.
These two will spend quite a lot of time trampling through the flat without a care just like all the others I've had.
I'm lucky in the fact that both my cats love rats and always have which is why I don't leave much of a gap when getting new ones, I wouldn't want the cats to forget and accidently eat one of them.:o

So.... you're no stranger to chewed carpets and wiring then? ;)
My rats are little buggars. They've chewed up into my sofa, so I've had to get some new semi rigid material for the base and am ready to staple it on. They cost me a fortune lol
holidayhutch 06-10-2007, 20:22 Aaaaw they are gorgeous, we have a couple of Dumbos boarding with us at the moment and they have wonderful personalities. The cage set up you've got for them too is fantastic:)
Lookit those ears Mojo! Glad to hear youve got 2 little uns and hope billy learns to love em as much as your Indy. Lspacehopper, your girls are fab too. Not sure our barmy bengal Alfie would be quite so tolerant as Indy ever was though. He's sulking big time at the moment just because Ashia decided to give birth to kittens this week and i wouldnt trust him with them, let alone rats.
Theyre both asleep on my shoulder, under my hair bless 'em. I don't want to disturb them by moving them back to the cage  so cute:D
ive only had my rats a few month but im smitten!
mojo1...they're gorgeous:)
:o:o:o Pippins a girl!!!!! Don't ask how I didn't notice:suspect:
Anyhoo second cage coming out shortly, I may let them have the odd litter if the interest is there for babies:hihi:
Don't worry they'll always have supervised visits with each other:D

Mojo....you can have the boy castrated and keep your pair. If you decided to just keep the two and in separate cages, that would be really unfair to them. They'd be able to smell each other, yet not be able to get to one another. Take my word for it....it's hard on them.
I brought a boy home to nurse and my girls went mental trying to get to him, and because he could smell the girls he got quite aggressive.
If you decide to have litters, it takes a lot out of the female and remember each litter could have up to 20 babies! How would you ensure they went to good homes and into appropriate sized cages? if you can't find homes for them straight away, are your cages big enough to hold maybe 15 rats?
If you've got a litter on the way, then you'll have to deal with it, but I certainly wouldn't get in to the habit of occasional breeding.

They are possibly the only rodent I've never bred and I wouldn't do it lightly. They are too young at present but mr vet will be contacted shortly and alas poor merry will not be as merry as he once was. If in the meantime I'm caught out then that will be that, I've been reading up on it for the past hour.
Mr Vet says he won't castrate Merry till he's at least 4 months old, so it's a choice of seperating them or risking babies in the mean time.
On a plus note the suppliers I got them from will take any babies if thats what occurs.
Most importantly of all though, they both had their first wash from Billy last night, he loves them.

Hi Mojo, It's a shame to have to separate them, but I wouldn't take the chance. Once neutered, after the appropriate time has lapsed for him to be declared 'sterile' (poor boy lol), you could reintroduce them.
hels1977 10-10-2007, 06:32 Awww, he'll be a nutless wonder bless him :P
Good luck, I hope it all goes well when the time comes :)

Well they're in seperate cages now, neither of them seems bothered by it, if anything poor old Merry seems relieved that he's not being constantly pestered by Pippin.
If rats could have pipes and slippers then he would have them:hihi::hihi:
