What is SHMBO?

I gather it means 'other half' or 'the missus' or whatever, but what does it actually stand for?

Welcome...not sure where it came from, but Andy Capp seems to spring to mind.

I *think* it's from Rumpole of the Bailey.... books by John Mortimer and also was a TV program with Leo McKern as Rumpole but I'm happy to be corrected on this.

John Mortimer did use it in his Rumpole books but I think it was originally from the book/film
