View Full Version : Belly/Egyptian dancing
Hi,
I am looking for a belly dance class near Broomhill, City Centre or Crookes.
Any suggestions are wellcome,
Greetings, Dey
There's one associated with THE MAX gym which is on Bole Hill Road. It's at the old Bole Hill School, part nursery with a gym and other businesses all around. I know the Belly dancing is on Saturday mornings, around half 11. If you want more info, let me know and I'll get it.

Cristal008 12-08-2005, 20:14 does anyone know of any tribal belly dance classes ???
Cheers Cristal
lissarose 20-12-2005, 12:54 There are tribal bellydance classes every Thursday night (John St, Sheffield - quite close to the city centre). Search for boomshankatribal for more details. - 6:45pm in the Sheffield Community Hall, part of the United football stadium
Hi!
I will be starting up 2 brand new Belly Dance classes in Hilslborough in January; Tuesday evenings from Jan 10th at Hillsboro Leisure Centre, 7pm-8pm (free to Fitness Unlimited members) and Thursday evenings from Jan 12th at the Memorial Hall on the corner of Forbes Road/Walkley lane (easy to reach by tram!), also 7-8pm. As they are new classes I will be starting completely from scratch with technique, so all welcome. You don't have to bear your belly, just wear whats comfortable, although most find that a long full skirt and a scarf to tie around their hips makes them feel more 'the part'.
The main reason I am teaching these classes is because I want to share this wonderful dance and all the benefits it has brought me (fitness and flexibility, confidence, friendship, real pleasure) - I know that sounds soooooo cheesy but its true!
Cheers
Cis
I can learn to belly dance in Sheffield?:P
Icklespud 04-01-2006, 13:22 if any1 finds out ls let me know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Search!!!!!!!!!

yep, you can learn to bellydance in Sheffield, also in Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Bradford, Tankersley.... I could go on!
When I first started learning I was quite amazed when I found out just how many bellydancers there were in Yorkshire (never mind the whole country)!
You also have a choice of classes (and styles) within Sheffield - I am starting new classes as mentioned above - but there is also Konnie, who teaches at 'The Max' fitness centre on Bole Hill Road, Walkley as well as numerous other places (I can't keep track of them all but I think Firvale might figure in there!) - she teaches 'traditional' Arabic dance (or Bellydance, as do I).
Then theres the Boomshanka Tribal Bellydancers - Tribal is a different style with influences taken from African, Flamenco, Indian dance etc. - they tend to use quite modern or crossover type music - they meet on Thursday evenings at the Sharrow Community Hall, by the Sheffield United ground.
At the Woodhouse worksout theres Lynne, who teaches both 'traditional' and a bit of tribal - not sure what days though.
I think theres also Stella at the Upperthorpe Healthy Living centre on Wednesdays, but not sure what that is like, and I heard there was also a class at the Polish club on Ecclesall road - again, no idea what that is like - feedback on either of these 2 welcome!!
Cheers
Cis
Spanna2005 09-01-2006, 14:32 :( I've got mahjonng at the same time as your first class.
Will you be going over the basics again next Tuesday Cis?
My friend teaches in Manchester but I'm not sure what style she does...
its a beginners class, so we will be starting pretty slow and revising quite a bit as we go along, so I don't think missing the first class will be too disastrous. I am also planning in some classes where it will be mostly 'catch-up' so you can request to go over moves that you have either missed or failed to get your head (or hips :D ) around the first time....
Cheers
Cis
Spanna2005 09-01-2006, 15:10 Excellent. Looking forward to it!

I would love to know where and when belly dancing classes take place.I would like to learn some more, I was taking classes for 3 months in Newcastle,I have recently move to Sheffield and I like to continue learn belly dancing. That location is convenient for me.Could you tell me any place where i can take belly dancing clases, please?
I teach Bellydance in Hillsboro, at the Leisure Centre on Penistone Road on Tuesdays, 7pm and at the Memorial Hall (bottom of Walkley Lane, behind the Deep End) on Thursdays 7.10 pm (ish) - pm me for more info (we are on easter Break next week but will be back the week after).
There are also classes at Crookesmoor Community centre on Thursdays with Liane, at City Limits dance centre on Penistone Road, Mondays and Thursdays, at The Max Fitness centre in Walkley on Mondays Wednesdays and Saturdays (I think, this info may be out of date) and Konnie who teaches there does various other classes around Sheffield, also Lynne at Woodhouse Workout (I think Tuesdays, but again not totally sure) and Boomshanka Tribal at the Hartley Street project Heeley - although their classes are currently full, but you can go on the waiting list.
Who did you do classes with in Newcastle? I know Kay Taylor who teaches up there, she is great!
Cheers
Cis

Glad to hear that I come recommended!
Thought I would put some details about the class on here so everyone can see - Maz, I will drop you an email (later when I am not at work) with directions to the venue, anyone else who needs directions, just pm me to let me know
The Thursday class is at the Memorial Hall, on Forbes Road/bottom of Walkley Lane, behind the Deep End at Hillsboro. Technically it runs 7-8pm, but in practise it is more like 7.10-8.10, as we give the Badminton club before us a bit of time to clear up. Classes cost £5 for a 'one off' or £4 if you book a block of 6. There is no need to book in advance, you can just turn up on the night and it is not a course, so you can start at any time.
The class is 'Open Level' which means suitable for different levels of experience - I have quite a few complete beginners and a few who have been coming for over a year and all sorts in between. I teach the basics of the moves then add more complicated variations for the experienced dancers and everyone can work at the level at which they are happy - I try and give everyone a bit of personal attention and feedback during the class too. We tend to revisit moves every few lessons, so you can build on technique - or if you have just started you will always get to pick up the basics within a few lessons.
As well as learning moves I also teach choreographies so you can put them into practise within a dance routine, make time for groups of students to put together their own combinations of moves and to improvise freely.
Although generally this is a fairly low impact form of excersise, you can find yourself working quite hard in a class - and one of the main aims is to have fun (have a giggle while you wiggle - cheesy, I know!).
What to wear is entirely up to you and what you are comfortable in, I prefer bare feet, but soft shoes are fine. A lot of dancers like to wear long full skirts and hip scarves, but there are also plenty who stick to leggings/tracksuits and T Shirts. Getting your belly out is optional.
Hope this is all useful info and I look forward to seeing you in class!
sheffminxy 30-04-2007, 13:38 Hi
did anyone have any luck with these classes?
well I had quite a batch of beginners last Thursday, although I had a few phone queries last week as well so they might have come from those - no-one owned up to being a forummer..

Hiya,
I teach Bollywood (and Bhangra) classes in Sheffield. There is a weekly class on Sunday afternoons (info on www.everydance.co.uk), and a new class on Monday evenings (8-9pm) beginning on 14th May (info not yet up on website). It's at Sam Jones Health Club, near Crystal Peaks shopping centre. Places limited so you need to contact me at info@everydance.co.uk or phone 01909-566831. (Class runs for 6 weeks - except for bank hol Monday - but may be extended if there is enough demand.
Sheena
Good to see something at Crystal peaks!
Sheena> do you do any belly dance classes in the south of the city - most of them seem to be in the North (Hillsboro/Walkley/Crookes) area!
I saw your post in the other thread about the introductory workshop at Goodwin Sports Centre on May 19th - sounds good for those who want to have a go
Of course if anyone can't wait that long, there is my class tonight (Thursday) at the Memorial Hall in Hillsboro, 7.15pm
Cheers
Cis

Hiya, Cis,
I don't run weekly bellydance classes, but will be teaching private lessons in Anston (S25) during the summer. Would you let me know about your classes so that I can tell people who ask and also come along and have some fun myself when I manage to grab the time? Ta.

Die Hard 03-05-2007, 18:26 They do Belly Dancing at Hillsborough Leisure Centre on Penistone Road. The Missus goes on Wednesday nights.
Hillsboro Leisure Centre class is on Tuesday nights - I know because I teach it !!
7-8 pm Tuesday, but you need to ring the Leisure Centre first thing Monday morning to book a place.
The other class I do is Thursdays - see details in previous post.
Theres also a class on Thursdays at the Crookesmoor community centre with Lianne
Wednesday nights (and also Mondays) would be Konnie at the Max Fitness Centre on Walkley.
see what I mean about them all being in the one area! - The only class I know in the South of the city is the Boomshanka Tribal class, at the Hartley Street project on Thursday, but I think they may be full at the moment!
Belly dancing sounds like fun. Thanks for all the suggestions!
ruthpowell 06-11-2007, 13:02 I teach classes in Meersbrook on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

moodibloos 08-06-2008, 20:53 Looking for a Beginners Belly Dancing class in the Nether Edge (Abbeydale Road) and Sharrow (London Road) areas.
Failing that, a class right in the centre of town ie not more than 10 minutes walking distance from The Moor or the High Street so I can catch bus home. :D
Looking for an evening class around 7pm or a weekend class.
Thanks.
Hello all,
We are excited to announce that we have added new inventory to our website.
Come by and check out all our new colors
marzino.com
Have a great day.:hihi:
Closest thing I can suggest for you Moodibloos is the Boomshanka Tribal classes at Meersbrook on Wednesday or Thursday evenings. Drop them an email on boomshakatribal@yahoo.co.uk to find out which classes have spaces and where to find them. They are a brilliant bunch.
I don't know of any classes in the City centre and most of the other classes I am aware of are in the north of the city (Burngreave, Walkley, Crookesmoor, Hillsboro', Grenoside, Wisewood etc) although I think Lianne may teach one near Norfolk Park - you could try emailing her on liannehankin@hotmail.co.uk to get more details.
Otherwise, my Thursday classes are right by the Hillsbro' tram stop (at St Johns Memorial Hall, Forbes Road/Walkely lane, behind the Rawson Spring pub, Thursday 7.15pm), so easy to get to from town.... (my contact for more details is aunty_cis@yahoo.co.uk)
hope you find something/somewhere suitable
dean1066 03-07-2008, 12:39 Hello,
does anyone know of any belly dancing classes or similar?
many thanks

roobarbpie 03-07-2008, 17:38 My daughter does Belly Dancing. Anyone got any idea where she can get a authentic outfit from - preferably in Sheffield?
Many thanks :)
Depends on what you mean by 'authentic' outfit - Cleopatras at Meadowhall often have some pretty tops and belts but they are usually Indian made.
I got my costumes in Cairo and Istanbul - thats definitely authentic, but also expensive :-). I also make my own costumes.
The internet may be your best bet - lots of stuff on Ebay, or try www.theshimmyshop.co.uk (she made the costumes for Sophie Mae on 'Britains Got Talent'). Or go to www.wiggle.org.uk for links to lots of costumiers as well as loads of info on bellydance.
roobarbpie 09-07-2008, 15:33 Thanks Cis - I'd forgotten I'd posted!
She's only 9 so there's not much available in her size. I eventually found something in a shop in Handsworth that I can adapt (hopefully).
She'll be in town doing "Chance to Dance" on Saturday. Anyone else?
littlejodancer 18-08-2008, 18:17 Hi there's a bellydance class running at the Wisewood School & Sports Association which isn't far from Crookes. The classes are on Wednesday evenings 7-8pm. You can contact siasanodance@aol.com for more information or telephone 07772163157.
littlejodancer 18-08-2008, 18:57 If you are interested in a beginners course email siasanodance@aol.com or telephone 07772163157 for further information or to register your place.
Regular classes held on Tuesday evenings 6:45 at the Grenoside Community Centre or Wednesday evenings at 7pm at the Wisewood School & Sports Association. Traditionally Egyptian Style but influenced by various other dance styles with lots of fun thrown in.
