View Full Version : Have I got the biggest scaredy-cat dog on the Forum?
Well, I know she's a nervous soul, but what she just did took the biscuit!
She was asleep on the sofa quite happily, then suddenly jumped off in a panic. Ma in law said it was because stupid dog had pushed one of the cushions she was resting her head on off the sofa - and obviously scared herself out of her wit!
:loopy:
The daft dobe often spooks herself- mind you, I think I'd nearly wet myself too if the barmy bengal decided to launch himself off the top of the wardrobe onto me in the middle of the night...
Molly is terrified of passing trams and buses and tries to walk through your legs if she's on the outside of us on the pavement (she'll only walk on your right hand side so the return leg of walks usually involves Molly walking closer to the traffic).
She also barks at other dogs but runs away yelping loudly if any of them bark back at her.
LOL Dozy - I feel your pain!
Medusa, do you know anywhere where you can take Molly so she can see the tramline and buses (maybe the Cathedral is a good example at a less busy time)but is at a safe distance?
Sit with her watching them from a distance and reward her for no reaction, make sure you take it very slowly though.
Very gradually get closer (over a matter of days depending on how she takes it) and continue to reward no reaction.
If she does react, just completely ignore the reaction and take a step back to where she was coping with the situation and build it up again.
The most important thing is to set her up to win. Dogs will repeat rewarding behaviours so it's important she's not set up to fail - she won't learn anything from that.
We have daily tram practice anyway Lotti- you can hear and feel them approaching so I take her to the back of the pavement and sit her down and give her a treat and a fuss while they pass then we carry on with our walk. She's really trying hard to do the right things, although she's so out of kilter at the moment with her second season in 3 months.
She was due to be spayed this week- ho hum.
she can still be spayed... if her season is in 3 months she's in the middle of them.
While she's still getting used to the trams, could you walk on the other side of the road on the way back so she can not be on the road side? Then when she's ok with trams and buses etc you can work on getting her to walk on the left!
Try to make your tram practice as least obvious as possible - obviously you need to be in control of her, but try not to let her think you're making a big deal of the tram! It's hard work isn't it
She can't be spayed because she's gone into season again 3 months early- poor honey doesn't know what to do with herself. The vet's confirmed that it's not a pyometra or anything like that- her hormones are just rather confused.
The answer to whether we could go on the other side of the road is- not without a huge detour and lots of crossing a busy road (it would also include crossing back over at a point where there is no crossing and you frequently stand at the side of the road for 10 minutes waiting for a space to happen).
I randomly call her to me and ask her to sit and wait politely on our walks anyway- it's good recall practice and good for her to know that when I call her she knows what she's expected to do and what reward she'll get for answering my call correctly. When I know that a tram's coming I just ask her to sit down like I do normally and she gets a bit of dried black pudding for sitting nicely. Once her bum hits the ground she doesn't shy away from them so she always earns the reward.
Oh sorry - I thought you meant she had a season coming up in three months!! Poor love, hope you get her sorted soon.
Oooh Takara's very jealous! She never gets dried black pudding (mainly cos her mum won't carry it with her! )
dane-katie 06-10-2007, 13:14 our dog is quite funny.
He hates strangers and snarls barks as if hes ready to have a go at them.
But when the chinchilla's or degus go near him he runs and starts shacking in his bed. Or even if the curtains blow in the wind. hehe

Aw poor little soul :(
I used to have a crazy border collie that loved to chase cats, until one had had enough and turned around and hissed at him, the dog seriously legged it and tried to burrow into a bush to get away from the cat!

He actually gets on with our wild rabbits. He sits and lets them hop around him all day long. Same with squirrils although he gets very confused at them running up trees.
He doesnt mind little animals at all. Untill this one day the Degu Sqeecked at him and he proper legged it slipping all over kitchen floor, he couldnt get in his bed fast enough. hehe
WallBuilder 06-10-2007, 16:31 My old dog Brett was a very large very powerful black German Shepherd. I also had a little hamster called Marmaduke who used to faascinate brett until one day he put his head a bit too close to the cage and Marmaduke spotted an ear tip through the bars and decided to have a taste. Poor Brett screamed rreally loudly and from that day on would leave the room if I took Marmaduke out of his cage and if he was running on the carpet Brett would bolt upstairs and couldn't be persuaded to come down not even his favorite Bonio's would get him to budge and when he did eventually re-appear he'd sidle down looking really apprehensive.
