Lots of pubs have open mic nights, but where are all the free-for-all jam sessions? I'm a banjo-picker (bluegrass mainly, but also alt-country, Cajun, etc) and I'm into some informal, easy-going jam sessions.
I'm open to the British/Irish folk stuff too, as long as it's played fast and furious.

Fagans pub, Broad Lane. Best sessions in town, from 9pm. Different styles on different nights (no music on Thurs or Sunday nights I think). Mondays and Wednesdays are eclectic and welcoming. Tuesdays is more diddly diddly I think. Not sure about Fridays and Saturdays - there's usually some music but sometimes the pub gets a bit full at the weekend with people who want to drink and talk (shock horror!), so I personally prefer the week nights for actually playing music.
Wednesdays are my favourite night.

I think The Fairways on Birley moor road have one. Might be worth asking there?

I replied a few weeks ago and suggested Fagans. I'll be co-hosting a jam session there tonight if you want to try it out.
