I recently bought a new hamster, and got a new cage etc for her to live in.
Shes getting on fine, and is enjoying the cage etc, but one thing is concerning me.
The cage is two tiered, and we bought a house and put bedding in it which she lived in happily for the first few nights which is ont the top shelf of the cage.
Last night however she pushed all the sawdust into one corner, under the shelf, pulled out all the bedding and pushed it into the corner as well.
I'm just wanting to know whether this is normal, and when I clean out the cage whether I should put it back as it was originally, or try to put it how shes made it
Thanks

all hamster's do that, well all ours have, just clean the cage out,

and she will re-arrange it to how she wants it. Hope this helps :)

Its normal, ungrateful little devils are hamsters. Females are the worst, it must be the nesting instinct, they like to construct huge big nests. She sounds quite happy to me.

hamsters love making little nests! its nice to leave a little bit of their old bedding for them when you change the cage :)

thanks, i was a bit worried cos she seems to have chosen the corner we can't get to at all, seems quite happily sleeping at the moment though. i feel a bit bad cos i had to take her wheel out last night it was so noisy, i'll have to try and find her another less noisy toy to keep her entertained! if i can figure out how to do it i'll post some pics cos she's the cutest thing ever!

It's very normal lol When I used to clean my hamsters cage out, I always used to save 1/2 of the bed so their scent was on it (shake out any pooh and food etc). I would then put fresh bedding in various parts of the cage, allowing them to do what comes natural and forage for their bedding to make their own nest up.

Hamsters are funny little things. I got loads of pleasure just watching their weird little ways :)

All critters do it- no matter how fancy and clean n tidy you make it all look they insist on turning it into a tip the minute your back is turned- it's called nesting and it gives them something to do whist we are asleep or at work (depending on whether they are hammies - nocturnal- or gerbils/ rats/ mice etc)

Mine is so ungrateful that I've stopped making up his bed anymore!

Some fluff is pushed in, some old stuff (but clean) is left, and a cheap loo roll is popped in too. Hamster shreds the loo roll and makes his own bed. He's familiar with the drill now :p

I keep a steady stock of empty loo n kitchen roll tubes for my 2 gerbs - they love to chew.

For a real treat, give them one complete with paper. My hammy loves it. At 36p for 4 its also a very cheap treat!
