View Full Version : Secondary School Open Nights
rainbow sky 04-10-2007, 09:48 Just wondered if anyone had been to or are planning to go to any of the recent open evenings for -
Abbeydale Grange
Newfield
King Edwards
King Ecgberts
Meadowhead
I am planning to go to them all just wondering what you all thought.
alchresearch 04-10-2007, 10:19 I think you're going to be very busy.
What about Tapton, while you're at it? I believe it's on the 16th....
Don't forget that you can also go to schools in Rotherham and Derbyshire as well. Some of these schools will be closer than some schools in Sheffield. I went to see Wales School last night, which is by far the best school in Rotherham. I won't be going to see any of the others in that authority.
Dizzyblonde 04-10-2007, 12:25 Think Newfield is in negotiations trying to avoid special measures, Meadowhead have been guiding them and might end up with a superhead from meadowhead. Abbeydale Grange is the smallest secondary in sheffield, and the only foundation school in Sheffield so far. Has a King Teds and King Ecgberts both have sixth forms and with them changing the rules this year, might end up being important. King Teds has a separate lower and upper school. Tapton one of the harder schools to get in and probably the most sought after sixth form. Wales has a big building so is probably well resourced.
Dizzyblonde 04-10-2007, 12:27 Oh and if going to an open evening avoid parking in the car parks for Sheffield Schools.

Did you go to Newfields? I believe it was last night.
Apparantly they are doing another one next Friday at 9am, for those that couldn`t attend.

Yes I did go last night and I was pleasantly surprised. After all the horror stories I heard about it I was relieved to find it was actually quite good. It would be good if they are doing another one next friday because we only managed to stay an hour, what with King Ecgberts being on same night.
Well we`ll be going next week. It was going to be a toss up between Newfield and Meadowhead for our lad, but he says all of his mates will be going to Newfield(from mundella) so he really wants to stay with his pals.

Anyone knows when High Storrs one is? And can ex pupils just go and have a wander?
thelurcher 29-09-2009, 17:02 As it's that time of year again, I was wondering how many families are looking round for a place for next year's Y7's, and which schools. In our area we have Parkwood Chaucer and Yewlands schools to choose from. Does anyone have children at these schools already and what do they think of them.
absynthfairy 29-09-2009, 21:15 High Storrs is next Thursday (8th Oct) 7-9. As for ex-students going for a wonder?....I have no idea. I just work there.

This is a pretty credible source. (http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/oxedu_reports/download/(id)/111807/(as)/107141_331146.pdf) However, they are in Special Measures already, no negotiating to avoid it.
Anyone know when silverdales is?
I've got a question I don't know if anyone could give me any advice please. We are looking around schools at the moment for my son who will be going into Y7 next year.
Our catchment school is quite poorly performing at the moment although improving year on year. I am going to try and get him in a better school (although I am prepared for the fact that this will not be easy and I may be unsuccessful).
If I fail to get him into a better school then he will probably end up in catchment as at least I will know that he is with familiar friends and some of his junior school peer group. So do I put down the catchment school as my lowest choice on my application? If I don't put it down and fail to get him into the other schools then the LEA will just 'place' him and this could be anywhere in my understanding (not even the catchment school), which in my opinion would be worse for him than catchment. If I do put it down will the powers that be take one look at the application and simply allocated catchment school to him (meaning I would then have to appeal).
He is a really bright lad and to be fair to him would probably do well anywhere, but feel that he will ultimately achieve more in a better school with continuity to 6th form. It's a tricky time for us parents, any advice appreciated,

Have you actually noticed when the question was asked? :hihi:

If you read back you will see that this thread was started by myself 2 years ago, when Newfield were not yet in special measures.

That'll be my lack of attention to detail. I usually sit and snigger at people who rant at out of date posts.
Sorry.:)
ashanta67 01-10-2009, 15:32 Hi MRSB73
I was in the same position last year. I decided not to include the catchment school as there was no way I would send my child there especially as we were hoping to move anyway. I put two schools in the area we hoped to move to and one inbetween the two. Needless to say, they were all rejected and we were offered the catchment school (because we couldn't provide an address in the new area yet). We were going to appeal but our move went through just before the appeal date and we were offered a place at our first choice in the nick of time.
Good luck!
thanks for that ashanta, will have to think carefully about it. We are not moving but in the current position I would not be very happy if he had to go to catchment. I guess I will just have see what happens and go to appeal if necessary. At least if I do everything I can I will have tried my best for him.

SURE IS!!! I go there, moved from animal grange, abbeydale was ****, and I experienced alot of rascism from the muslims, pakistanis and somalis, however the south east asian people were some of the best there, and never did anything wrong, but wales is definately good, everyone was very welcoming and within 2 weeks I had lots of friends and was going out after school
