We're quite happy to hear from anyone who is a football fan.
We just don't like people who ditched their local team and decided to jump on the bandwagon of whoever happens to be winning trophies lately.

No I think what CB's saying is that true fans support a team whether they're winning or losing, whether they're in the prem league or the 2nd division, whether they're rich or don't have 2 pennies to scratch their ar$e$ with. If someone's a Manchester United / Chelsea / Liverpool / Arsenal fan because they were brought up in that area then fair enough, if they're a fan of that team just because that team are always winning things then it's a bit shallow, a bit fake, a bit "flavour of the month", a bit fickle, and a bit disloyal to their home town club.
Of course if I'm wrong then I'm sure Mr CB will correct me.

No correction needed Sir, you are spot on.
Must be my Canadian accent he doesn't understand :D
AtticusFinch 04-10-2007, 11:35 The golden rule of being a football fan is that you can never ever change your team. Anyone who switches team instantly annuls their right to be a football fan. The team that you first choose as a five or six-year-old kid just getting interested in football is the same as the team you'll be following when you're a wisened old pensioner sitting in front of a fire with pipe and slippers.
If you're ever in a football conversation with someone who admits to changing teams, the Football Supporters Act 1972 allows you to stop them mid-conversation and say
"Due to switching of teams, your football opinion has become invalid and you are thus prohibited from participating further in this conversation"

I can see where you're coming from with this - but my first team of interest was Liverpool, because the first game I can ever remember watching was them beating Borussia in Rome, 1977. That got me interested in football, which in turn got me interested in the Blades, my local team.
I still root for Liverpool, but not if they're playing Sheffield United.
In European competition, I root for any British team, unless they're playing each other which forces me to choose.
ReginaldD 04-10-2007, 12:09 I support Wednesday because my dad supports them simple as, I didn't have a choice. Though the first ever football game I went to was United v Reding in about 94 as we fot free tickets with United's football in the community programme. My mum and dad couldn't afford to take me, my sister and my dad. I'll always remeber my first Wednesday game though just after Euro 96 against Villa I was amazed by teh ground all the flags were still up it was very impressive at the time. It was the season when we made a really good start and were top of the Premiership after about 3 games.
NEKRO138 04-10-2007, 12:43 People can support whoever they want, of course they can. I just choose to support my local team, which being from Hillsborough is Sheffield Wednesday.
I do think you feel a stronger link with the club you support if it is one local to you though. I personally prefer to support a team of underdogs.
You should support the team closest to where you lived as a youngster or one that your immediate family had a good reason for supporting. Not just the team that was doing best when you started watching football. You can pick a league team if your nearest team aren't professional. They are the rules
steveb2007 04-10-2007, 14:31 Funny tho innit?90% of fans walking the streets always have liverpool,man utd,arsenal shirts on,not portsmouth,wigan,fulham?

Then you've changed teams! Don't you feel a bit guilty about that?
There's nothing wrong with having a second team. I like the Blades and watch them at Bramall Lane sometimes (I was there at the weekend for the Southampton game). I feel a certain affinity to them because I live in Highfield, but if they were playing my true team (Liverpool) or were involved in a game which affected them, I'd be backing Liverpool without question.
As for British teams in Europe, it depends which team. I'm indifferent to Arsenal so I wish them well in Europe, I dislike Chelsea so want them to lose and I hate Man Utd and Everton so love to see them lose. The Champions League isn't about representing the host country, that's what the national team is for. It's all about individual club glory.
:)

No.
You seem to be working on the basis that I chose Sheffield United. I didn't; they chose me.
Preacher Man 04-10-2007, 22:06 I hate Man Utd and Everton so love to see them lose.

I like to go with the manager and the players.
Always followed Liverpool since, well my big brother did so whats a kid to do ?
Been unhappy with Liverpool and pleased with them.
Sometimes respect other clubs sometimes don't.
No significant point to the post but Man U are scum and Chelsea were ok when ruud gullit was there.
Oh, wherever I am living, I always want to see the local clubs do well, I enjoy going to live matches :)

Real footie fans will watch any team play, as I did when in the RAF. We paid to watch any match and usually we supported the underdog. I am an Evertonian but I once took a red to Wolverhampton from RAF Lynham, to see Wolves try to avoid relegation, they lost to Liverpool; we didn't get in but we listened to it on the car radio heading back.
In those days Liverpool supporters had something about them for instance: we were on a hilltop looking down on Molineux some guys were up a lamp post I asked what they could see the answer came back ' we can't see the ground but we’ve got a good view of some fellas who can'
Nowadays you have to be careful getting into any ground because of this away supporters not being allowed in certain parts of the ground rule.
I can't walk past a game in the park on Sunday without watching for at least half an hour, supporting one of the teams and giving the ref some useful advice (in a friendly, humorous fashion, naturally).
