elmo my black and white tom cat is doing my head in
he walks in the house eats is food. buggers off upstairs to bed for the day then comes down later on for his tea/supper the off he trots into the night.but its getting to the stage where he doesnt come back for 2/3 days. i would love to know what he is up too ? and dread to think how many mini elmos are now about.

This is what un-neutered toms do, their whole life is to keep their territory and breed.
You would find him a lot more home loving if you had him neutered.

Without a doubt- whilstever he's intact, his primal instincts will be: food, sex, shelter. Get him snipped and see how quickly he turns into loving boy rather than lover-boy.

This is what the RSPCA website says about neutering your male cats.

There is a massive unwanted cat problem in this country and allowing an unneutered tom outside will only add to the problem. The same goes for letting out unspayed females of course but an unspayed queen can only produce one or two unwanted litters per year, a tom could be responsible for many times more.

Unneutered tom cats will roam searching for females on heat. This increases their chances of being killed trying to cross busy roads as well as getting trapped in sheds, garages and other buildings.

Unneutered toms will fiercely defend their territory. Feline AIDS and Leukaemia are spread through fighting and mating, the chances of your cat picking up one of these killer diseases are greatly increased if he is not neutered.

Unneutered toms will mark their territory by spraying it with urine. If you don't want this to happen in your house, get him neutered

Thats great Susie I really do think you will see a different cat afterwards as well, it would be great if you could let us know how you get on with him :)

It would be really worth your while getting Elmo tested for Feline Leukaemia Virus and FIV (cat version of AIDS) whilst you're taking him to the vets. There's nothing that can be done to treat either of the viruses if he's got them, but it's important to know if he has them so that you can avoid him being allowed to mix with other cats and plan for his future.

The viruses are sexually transmitted and also transmitted through the exchange of body fluids from fighting with other tom cats- and the infection rates in feral toms (with whom he will have been competing for the queens) is well over 10% in most cities these days.

After he's neutered if he's still wayward, get one of these (http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_2365103.html)! I'd like one but I think it might feel like spying! :hihi:

Good luck on keeping him in and getting the snip done susie34- hopefully he's not caught anything nasty on his travels. Please check him over for puncture wounds and the like just in case he's been fighting.

They'd find it difficult to prove paternity- as I understand queens can be impregnated by more than one tom at a time so kittens in the same litter could have different fathers.

Awww- now that's a good demonstration of sulking!

It's all for his own good though.

Cats turn sulking into a real art form, only my daughter does it better

Alfie is in a total sulk at the moment, because he thinks he's had his nose put out with the kittens. He deliberately turns away from me when I go to tell him he's still 'favourite baby', until I get the cat treats out...

We've got a new favourite treat for the cats as well as the dog. It turns out that dried black pudding is as addictive as crack if you're a carnivore!

Miraculously all felines forgive me for bringing in other kittens and a huge dog when offered a piece of the stuff.

Maybe you should get some to beg Elmo for forgiveness when you've had his norries off Susie?

I hope he's milking it for all it's worth. Give it a few days n he'll have forgotten what he used to have- and hopefully become more of a home-boy.

Awwww- I'm so glad to hear after all of the worry that you're getting Elmo back as a loving furry now his hormones aren't so much in control.

It will actually improve over the next few months as his body adjusts to the lack of testosterone too- look forward to soppy snuggles!
