Can anyone tell me if a flea market still operates in Sheffield, and where and when? Ages ago I used to go to the Setts Market on a Monday but that has gone now, and then my work prevented me from following things up. Now I have more leisure, I'd like to be able to browse amongst the junk once more, in the hope of finding hidden treasures!!

Any info gratefully received--ta :)

Mate, if you want fleas there're loads in our living room where the cat sleeps! Come and help yourself!

...seriously though, what exactly is a flea market??

Basically, it's a market where traders put out secondhand stuff on stalls. A bit like a car boot sale except that it's held as a market and not as temporary tables put up in a field.

And thank you, but we have enough fleas of our own from our own cat! :D

Aaah, right! So it's basically what our family has called "t'Wednesday market" for God knows how many years!

If it's not too far out of your way, Rotherham always used to have a flea market day on Wednesdays in the covered outdoor market in the middle of town. It's the one with the big fancy marquee style roof (a lot fancier that what it's covering, that's for sure!). I'm pretty sure that still takes place weekly though.

The outdoor market stalls on King Street and Exchange Street (by the Castle Market) still have a "flea" market on a Monday, selling allsorts of second hand goods, from furniture, to coffee machines.

There is a flea-market of sorts on a Wednesday on the same stalls, but that's mostly concerned with selling second hand clothes.

Do people still buy second hand clothes? I'd have imagined with the lovely cheap imports from China thet we'd have managed to stop that sort of things.

The Monday flea market is a pale shadow of what it was a few years ago, and basically I find it not worth going to any more. Compare that to the one in Huddersfield on a Saturday (for example) and you'll see what I mean.

I quite agree. The Setts flea market on Mondays used to be excellent. Apart from fairly high-grade car boot stuff, there were all kinds of collectibles. And where else would you find a Russian typewriter? I bought one there for £10 in 1986 - it was just what I needed for a book I was writing. Sheffield ought to be able to do better than the apology for a flea market that we have now.

It supposedly has the largest outdoor market in the UK.
