Anybody here seriously into the techincal side of pc's? I built my own with the aid of a friend and love playing with the components and buying and fitting new parts. my specs are as follows...

- AMD Athlon XP 2500 CPU overclocked to 2.1GHZ
with an Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 80mm Heat Sink & Fan

- MSI Mainboard

- 768MB of DDR Ram

- 2 Hard Drives, Primary is a 30Gig to store all important files, Slave is a 40Gig for gaming and such programs

- XFX Nvidia Geforce FX5700 256mb Graphics Card

- 52x CD/RW and 48x IDE Internal Atapi DVD Rom drive

- ThermaltakeX case with transparent side panel, Lockable with keys (so yer anoying family cant get to it) , 5 Fans, 2 just inside the panel, 1 on top to cool USB ports etc, 2 on back, plus CPU Fan and lots of cool lights and gadgets inside

- LCD 17" TFT Monitor by Digimate set to maximum resolution (1280x1024)

- Not a particularly special sound system. Just your average 2 set sterio multimedia speakers

Still looking to get a better processor, aswell as better speakers with sub woofer and surround sound for all my games :P

Despite writing software for a living the most powerful computer here at The Towers is a 500MHz P2....:)

I think I'm just hitting the limits of that with some of the AI stuff I'm doing, so an upgrade is likely this year.

Their servers, etc. here are all P2 machines as well.

I always say it's not what you've got, it's what you do with it that counts... ;)

AMD XP 2500+ @ XP3200+ (Barton core, can got faster but I cant be arsed) cooled with an SLK900a with a 92mm fan on it ;)

1Gb of PC3200 RAM, 6-3-3-2.5

Motherboard, Asus A7N8X-X, slightly modified, modded a 50mm fan onto the North Bridge, and sinks on the mosfits and south bridge.

3 HD's, 60gb main drive, 250gb storage, 80Gb connected to my IDE controller card for DVD "backups"

ATI Radeon 9800 pro @ 9800XT speeds, has a VGA Silencer on it.

Pioneer 107 DVD-RW, Lite-on 16x DVD-ROM, both connected to my IDE Controller.

Case is a Cheiftec Dragon, purple in colour, 5 80mm fans (2 front, 2 back, 1 side), PSU is a 550w dual fan by Qtec

15" LCD monitor by NEC (would love a beasty 19" CRT but just dont have the room for it in my bedroom :( )

This is far from my ideal system, I'm looking at an Athlon 64 and an X800 graphics card in the next 6 months, depends how I'm doing cash wise when it comes to the end of my year at Uni ;)

[edit]
Sound system, well, I just hook my PC straight into my stereo and blare it through my stereo speakers ;) surround sound?? bah, who needs 5 tiny eeny weeeny speakers when you can have two big ones? :P

Overclock it! Durons and the older Athlons are insane overclockers :D you could probably EASILY go over the 1Ghz barrier!

Kind of interesting that at least two of us involved professionally in IT have the lowest spec computers!

Weird!

Not really, unless you play games on your PC (which I do) then there really isn't any need for such a fast PC. I try and tell this to people when trying to help them buy a PC, but it's rare anybody listens :(

If your only going to do word processing and internet surfing you dont need anymore than a pentium 1 technically... I used to do word processing and web browsing on my 486 for christ sake :P

a P3 800mhz or similar will do for almost anyone unless they intend to use it for gaming.

[edit]

Also, if you do a lot programming then the extra mhz come in real handy ;) I can tell a HUGE difference in time when compiling on the 1Ghz systems at Uni compared with my home PC... especially when I'm including all the DirectX stuff... eeesh, that takes forever at times!

That's what I've always told folks - I suppose nowadays most home PCs are used a lot for gaming and media manipulation.

I still have a 25MHz 486 laptop that will surf, do e-mail and word process quite happilly! :)

Fortunately most of the stuff I compile is small(ish) DLLs - I have an object fetish when it comes to writing stuff! When I have the BIG compiles to do I just go and do something else...:)

I think the longest compile time I ever experienced was with a 640k IBM PC (8086 or was it an 8088?) compiling and linking Clipper and C code in the mid 1980s...oh joy....:)

whoa im surprised theres so many cool pc people here. i edited my specs if any1 cares.
Does any1 here play CounterStrike Source or HalfLife2 Deathmatch or any other games online?
Im looking to get a better CPU but not sure if i have to check compatibility with my motherboard first? i use mainly for gaming so ..
Also, does any1 know of any IT Technician placements/jobs in sheffield that dont require format IT qualifications?

The games I'm currently playing at the mo are Vampire Bloodlines, Need For Speed Underground 2 and Chronicles of Riddick (completed it once)... I don't play online much, when I do its UT2004...

The only upgrade you would be able to do without swapping mobo's would probably be to get a 2500 or 2400+ mobile chip (barton cores!!!), because they have unlocked multipliers and work at a lower voltage... you can get them upto around 2.6ghz on really good air cooling provided you have decent RAM, know what your doing with overclocking (ie good understanding of voltage increases etc)

I noticed that. I work in, amongst other things, areas of IT and all my machines are 1Ghz or under PIIIs using everything on-board where possible. They all do the job intended admirably, (apart from the flaky AMD box in the corner but we don't talk about that)!

I'm just thinking of upgrading my main PC, a PIII 700, as it's starting to struggle a bit with some tasks.

i have an XP 2500 overclocked to 2.1GHZ. can it go further with my current cooling? i have an Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 2 with a fan speed of 2200RPM. Says it can cool up to an Athlon XP 3200+

Not being a hardcore gamer, I have still found upgrading very rewarding, spending a lot of time in fractals and photoshop.

I do play CS:source online, it's my online game of choice as its possible to dip in and out without a big time committment - unlike EVE and Aces High.

which XP2500? is it multiplier unlocked? if not you'll be totally bottlenecked with your memory and motherboard and wont get much beyond 11 x 215 unless you have an amazing mobo and some PC3700 RAM or something ;)

and your cooling may cool upto 3200+, but thats for a real 3200+ thats meant to run at 1.65v stock, not about 1.7v which most 2500+ need to run at 3200+ speeds without errors...

anyways, be happy with what you've got, to go faster without upgrading to Athlon 64 you going to need to replace a fair bit.... plus, your main bottleneck for gaming is your graphics card, it wasnt even top of the range for the last generation :P

soz im not as intelligent as u lol ... jeez i didnt think they'r would be such smart a$$es on here... all i know is its an AMD CPU and a new MSI mainboard. all i know about ram its that its DDR type and theres 768mb of it. i dont know a lot about overclocking but i know it would be pushing it to go any further than 2.1GHZ when its a 2500 .. right?

OK here is mine, I just upgraded a few bits this week so it's not bad, just not as good as Bedhead's.

Abit KV8 Pro 3rd eye motherboard
Athlon Sempron 3100+ (overclocked to 2.43Ghz)
Radeon 9200 se 128mb graphics card
512mb RAM (soon to be 2gb)
80gb HDD with cooling fan
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS 24bit soundcard
8 USB 2.0 ports
4 Firewire ports
A dual layer DVD burner
A CD/RW
500w Power Supply Unit
19" TFT monitor
Harman/Kardon Soundsticks II speakers and sub
EZcool Alpine silver case with LCD display
2 blue neon cooling fans
3 other fans
Rounded EIDE cables (supposed to improve airflow and look less cluttered)

I believe this will probably give me geek status.

Athlon Sempron 3100+ (overclocked to 2.43Ghz)
Radeon 9200 se 128mb graphics card
512mb RAM (soon to be 2gb)
80gb HDD with cooling fan
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS 24bit soundcard
8 USB 2.0 ports
4 Firewire ports
A dual layer DVD burner
A CD/RW
500w Power Supply Unit
19" TFT monitor
Harman/Kardon Soundsticks II speakers and sub
EZcool Alpine silver case with LCD display
2 blue neon cooling fans
3 other fans
Rounded EIDE cables (supposed to improve airflow and look less cluttered)

I believe this will probably give me geek status.

Lol. Almost. Maybe if you knew what type of RAM u had, the full capabilities of all your components and a few others things, u'd be a regular geekazoid. :D
I know my ram is DDR, and i think its PCI2 ... not sure tho lol.

4 PCs here (all pretty old, but none are used for games - that's what the PS, PS2, XBox is for;) )

PC 01 (Gateway\LAN Server):

Pentium 1@100Mhz
8G HD (4 partitions)
64M RAM
Cirrus Logic 5446 PCI - ancient GFX
50X CD
No Audio
AIST Vision 4i Monitor - ancient

This PC is used solely @ a gateway for the next 3:

PC 02 (Kids):

Pentium 2@233Mhz
2.38G HD
80M RAM
Cirrus Logic 5446 PCI - ancient GFX
4X4X32 CD/RW
32X CD
Crystal CS4232/36/37/38 Audio - ancient

PC 03 (GF):

Pentium 1@133Mhz
20G HD (5 Partitions)
192M RAM
Matrox MGA Mystique - ancient GFX
4X4X32 CD/RW
16X CD
Crystal CS4281 Audio - ancient

PC 04 (This One):

AMD Duron@600Mhz
40G HD (11 Partitions)
192M RAM
SiS 6326 AGP - ancient GFX
52X32X32 CD/RW
DVD ROM
H801 Audio - CR4P

Keep promising ourselves a small(ish) upgrade but, as everything is working and talking to each other, and there's always something else to take money away, I'm a bit reluctant to do so (maybe the GF's PC soon though;) )!

I believe it wont ;) Sempron's are like AMD's celeron ;) the 9200se is about as sucky as you can get without having on-board graphics, especially when your running a 19" monitor!! 1600 x 1200 resolution on a 9200se... hope you dont play games :?

500w power supply? obviously not a decent brand, because you wouldnt need that much power from an Antec or anything ;)

anyways, not trying to rip you... but your system isn't as good as your making out... its pretty average

This is true of the socket A semprons but mine is a socket 754 which means my Sempron 3100+ would run around 10% faster than a 3200 XP. The Sempron 3100 gives about the same performance as an Athlon64 2800 but without the 64bit support and when overclocked it beats Intels new 915G chipset, a 3.2GHz Pentium 4e at 2D benchmark tests.

I know the grahics card is nothing special but after spending £650 on my computer in the last month I thought I would wait a month or 2 before upgrading that. (The only games ever played on it are Football Manager and I have recently become annoyingly addicted to Spider Solitaire)

I don't know if its a good make but my PSU is made by EZ, the same as my case (EZ cool 7105H), I'm not sure if it's a good PSU make but their cases are top notch.

I usually use it for web design where I have Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop, at least 2 web browsers and more often than not Spider Solitaire open at once, and keep flicking between them.

The cables are actually even more tacky than I first said, they glow under the neon light. Although my case doesnt have a window, it is made out of mesh like the Mac G5 so the light glows through that.

My KB's got an additional 20 buttons (above the Function keys).

They are originally programed with functions for web browsing, email, multi media.

However, each one can be re-programmed;) to whatever you like.

I have just updated my RAM, I now have 1GB DDR PC3200, I also got some RAM heatspreaders so they last longer and a dual exhaust fan. Now got got 7 fans in total, that should be enough for now. With the heatspreaders I got some RAM heatsinks but I'm saving them for when I get a new graphics card.

_Fate_
19-01-2005, 17:51
Lol. Fans for your RAM? <_< ooook ..

xafier
19-01-2005, 18:48
adlinds... you do realise that DDR memory really doesnt get all that hot, certainly not hot enough for heat spreaders or RAM sinks to have any effect what so ever on their performance or overclockability? ;)

its a myth, the only RAM that heat spreaders are paritally useful for is the old SD-RAM... but even then, it wouldn't improve overclockability in another more than about 1mhz :P

As I mentioned before, your CPU is a big bottleneck, the Semprons only have a 128kb L2 cache if I remember correctly... compared with 512kb on the Barton core CPU's, its a major performance downgrade... and your graphics card has a lot to be desired for ;) but good luck in your search for spending lots of upgrading everything needlessly!

by using PC's since I was 10 years old :P and now I'm nearly 20, so you go figure, its a lot of years of PC hardware knowledge... I keep myself up to date with hardware talk and hang around on specialist forums... mainly www.guru3d.com which specialises in graphics card advice and processors and overclocking ;)

PC hardware only becomes interesting when you start using a dremel, an old aluminium heatsink and silver epoxy compounds ;) oh and, 2B pencils or thin wire for pin mods etc on older processors... lol

Ah yes, shortcut buttons - amazing things - mine go to iTunes and Firefox. - as I changed them all from the standard dross they have them set to.

You could always click the shortcut on the desktop - save going through Start etc. ;) Or Run "Calc" from the DOS dialog box.

Er im not too sure cos i hardly knew anything about pc's when we got ours. I was like 8 years old. I think its something like this:

64mb RAM
10 Gig HD

Cant remember the CPU, Gfx Card or anything. The remains of it are under my bed in its original case but i cant be arsed to get it out and look.

first PC -

Zenith "Portable" Z171

640x200 mono LCD screen

fold out keyboard

twin 5 1/4" floppies

NO HDD! (you had to have one boot disk constantly mounted)

80C88 processor. (oh the speed)

640Kb RAM - the maximum available on *any* PC at the time.

We ran MS-DOS and the free package GW Basic that came with it. Wordstar and SuperCalc spreadsheets. And that was about all it could do.

First computer was an Amstrad CPC 6128+, it took floppy disks and some kind of cartridge. Next I had Atari ST and the Amiga A500.

My 1st PC was a 486DX, it had a 650MB HDD and 8mb RAM which was later upgraded to 12MB at a cost of £55. I remember being very impressed when it played small fuzzy video clips in Encarta 95.

I also had a some kind of games console it was a Phillips G7000 and had some top quality games such as space invaders. Has anyone else ever heard of the Phillips G7000? It was similkar to the old Atari games console but about 4 times the size.

FIRST PC:

E machines 620 home pc

2.7 GB Celery processor

As you can probably guess, i did not own or know anything about pc's until 18 months ago

First PC:

Amstrad 1640 PC.

Don't know the specs but:
2 X 5¼" floppy.
No Hard drive.
16 colour graphic card.
Tweater.

Windows 2.0

It owns, I still use components of that PC in this one (Captain_Scarlet)
