Hi

I wonder if anybody could suggest a solution to this problem.

I have a friends new laptop & ‘speedtouch’ router in front of me - here is the problem:

The laptop does not connect to the internet with the ‘speedtouch’ router – yet same said router connects his pc without a problem.

I have connected the laptop via my router (that is running my pc and it works fine.)

I know this sounds as if the ‘speedtouch’ router is faulty but yet it works with his pc – am I missing something?

(One thing to mention is the speedtouch has a little red light above WLAN)

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Andy

It sounds like you just need to install the software for the speedtouch modem onto the laptop.

You need to give the speedtouch model number. Is it actually a router or a 330 USB ADSL Modem?

It is Thomson SpeedTouch 585 v6 (then loads of serial nos) Sorry don't know the difference between a modem & router. It is definately for ADSL and has 4 usb sockets.

'It sounds like you just need to install the software for the speedtouch modem onto the laptop.'

I do not think they have done this - is this necessary - I thought you could plug your laptop into any ADSL connection (for example in a Hotel) and it would work. It works on my broadband connection without loading any software???

Modem connects one computer and the computer uses the modem to make the connection.
Router makes the connection itself with settings saved inside and often provides connectivity to up to 4 network devices via ethernet ports.

It is definately for ADSL and has 4 usb sockets.

No, it will be 4 ethernet ports unless it's actually a USB hub.

What you need to do is check through all of the settings on router via it's web interface and make sure they are correct, especially the username and password. Also use the router's status page to find out what's failing.

Andy,

I've just looked at the spec of your router. A few questions -

1. What cable are you using to connect to the speedtouch? You should be using an ethernet cable to connect the laptop to the router.

2. When you plug the laptop into the router, what happens? Do any lights come on?

3. In "Network Connections", is there "Local Area Network" listed in there?

4. When connected, what does the local area connection say in network properties?

Hi Resolve

1. Yes it is a yellow Ethernet cable
2. Yes lights are power. Ethernet, dsl (green) and WLAN (red)
3. Yes local area connection
4. For some reason it says connect using Realtek RTL8139 Family Fast Ethernet

I have not changed any settings – yet this laptop connects to the web using my BT broadband router???

Hi Alcatraz

Sorry - it connects with Ethernet cable and is a router.
Lost me with the suggestion how to fix. How can it connect to the web interface when it can’t get online? Can see the status page but have no idea what is failing and what should be changed. But guess it is something to do with these settings.

But as mentioned to resolve above - the laptop will connect using these settings and using my router????

Can you try the following?

In 'Network Connections', right click on 'Local Area Connection' and then select 'Properties'.

Click on 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click properites. Make sure 'Obtain an IP address automatically' is selected.

wait a sec you have a rou....

you have taken your friends speedtouch router to your home and you are trying to connect to the web with it from there, it connects fine in your friends home but not in yours, is that correct ?

if so the login details in the speedtouch router need changing to your login details

ADSL routers aren't like modems they don't dial a specific number, they simply pick up the line and the exchange connects you to your ISP, so as it's connected to your phone line at the mo it's connecting to your ISP but it's trying to use your mates login details to to log in and your ISP is rejecting it

....god I hope thats right I'll feel a complete idiot if it isn't

Can't see that optopn.
This is Vista.
local are a connection - view status - properties (and there are 7 boxes - all ticked including tcp/IPv6 and TCP/IPv4) both of these have 'obtain an IP address automatically ticked

There you have it then Vista, wipe the laptop, install linux, or even XP. Vista is nearly as bad as Windows ME (Microsoft Embarrasment)

you'll need to open a web browser to the ip address of the router, probably 192.168.0.1, and change the account details of the router via it's management web pages

I'm not familiar with the router or I would tell you exactly what steps to take

I have read a lot of people don't like vista, but it is not my laptop so can't 'wipe' it and install a different option (even if I new how!!!)

No idea how to do that - and sounds way above my level of competence!
If I can't get it to work I will take it back to the owner. He will have to purchase another router &/or pay for somebody to install & sort it out.

Anybody know anybody I can recomend he calls? - I am sure he will gladly pay to get it up and running.

Click start button and in the search box type 'cmd' and hit enter. In the new window type 'ipconfig /all' then enter and look for the default gateway IP address in the results that should follow (it will probably look like esme's example above). Copy this (or write it down) and type it into the address bar of your browser (IE or firefox). This should take you to the router's configuration pages. From there you should be able to get a lot more information about the state of the connection.

If you don't get any information back from the ipconfig command chances are there are issues with the ethernet connection between the laptop and router.

Hope that helps,

andyxxx - give up! There are a thousand people in Sheffield who could get it working in less than 120 seconds and, no offence intended, it is evident you are not one of them. Find a friend, relative or one of the owner's friends or relatives who can do it for free in less time than it takes to post a forum message.

managed that and found more info but still not able to connect

I am sure you are right - loads of people could get it going in no time at all (You may think I have no idea - but the guy whos comp it is, can't even send an email yet lol)and i am persisting only cos I suspect it is something simple that I can sort.

As I said if I can't do it he will gladly pay - if anybody can recomend anybody.

the laptop is your mates and it connects ok using your router on your phone line

your mates router connects ok at your mates house, presumably using a different PC

so you need to go to your mates house, connect his router to the net there and then plug the laptop in to the router

you will probably find it works and it's just you trying to use your mates router at your home thats confusing things

That pretty much sums it up (his router connects his pc at his home but not his laptop) and yes I have now unplugged it and will do just that before i throw it out the window.

Many thanks for everybodies time and suggestions.
