Pistol Pete 14-04-2003, 13:43 Hi,
i looked on the FreeView website about 4 months ago and S10 was not covered (poor reception).
Does anyone living in the area (Redmires road) have FreeView and if so is the reception any good.
Cheers for any replies.
Pete.

freeview is the new "free to air" digital TV service from the BBC, replacing ITVDigital

I live in Crookes (S10) near the top of the hill (quite close to "The Ball" pub.)
I just have one of those aerials that sit on top of your telly and I can get freeview OK.
Having said that, I was told a similart thing when I bought the box but the shop (Dixons) said if it didn't work I could get my money back so I didn't have anything to loose really.

*Twinkle* 17-04-2003, 19:48 Freeview is excellent! The signal in my area (S13) is brilliant too! We had to get a great whopping aerial though, which doesnt complement the more traditional build of my house, but hey its better than a huge sky dish! My one gripe is that it's tempremental. A day or two ago I was flicking channels, rather quickly I might add, and it stopped working, the screen went black and it decided it wouldn't work. I left it alone for a while, then switched it on again and it went back to "First time installation mode" again. Grr! It was annoying because we had to tune the thing in again! That's probably due to my excessive channel flicking, but oh well!

lol, the newer aerials are bigger than the minidish's
baublebag 19-04-2003, 16:49 I live in S6 well down the hill from posho Crookes so had to get a new outdoor aerial which cost 85 quid installed on top of the £99 for the box, but now it's superb, wouldn't be without it. Worth it just for 6 Music and BBC4.
Unless you have one of those big #$%£-off TVs with stonking stereo sound, my tip would be to make sure you get a Freeview box that has a proper SCART connector on the back so you can wire the crystal clear digital stereo sound into your HI-FI. My PACE box has a silly custom SCART on the end of the cable that you can't break the audio out from, in the end I had to take the back off the telly and solder audio leads onto the PC board. I believe the Grundig box has a proper SCART but as they've gone bust you'd better be quick!
baublebag 19-04-2003, 16:53 PS I got the aerial from a bloke who trades as Stannington Aerials, very quick and efficient and the coolest thing was, the aerial he supplied is made in Sheffield! It doesn't look any different from a normal TV aerial, maybe a tad longer that's all.
alchresearch 24-04-2003, 21:49 For £85???? I would hope it was gold plated for that price!
Pistol Pete 30-08-2003, 18:01 Hi,
just been to Cole Brothers to ask about Freeview availability in the S10 area. Apparently its a bit hit and miss and can vary significantly from road to road.
If there's anyone on Redmires Road or Barncliffe Road that manages to get a decent reception, i'd be grateful for any feedback.
Cheers,
Pete
If it helps, I was told that Freeview wasn't guaranteed in the S11 area either. I have a box in my bedroom and it receives the digital channels just fine. I might just have got lucky though.
Lindseyw 30-08-2003, 23:05 Same as for my area.
The Freeview website shows no service in the S17 area as well.
S10 area is served by the transmitter at Crosspool. Apparently to increase the signal transmitted requires up to 27 different authorites and quangos to give permission so can take years. You can look on www.freeview.co.uk to search your postcode. In the meantime you will have to go for a Sky box and pay the minimum £6.25 pm (for 1st year) to get the "free" to air channels.
Note that Sky are to launch a free package of their own. Details here. (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds11609.html)
hullmackem 01-09-2003, 12:39 Got one myself and I live in the S8 area, dunno how cloe it is to you ?!
Best bet is to check the aerial and get a signal booster.
We get most of the channels on the top of Lodge Moor! Not too bad unless the wind blows. You will probably need a new aerial tho - we paid about £35.
Agent Dan 04-09-2003, 16:16 I have inquired as to freeview in the S1 postcode recently (I was really very bored at the time!). You can get freeview in S1 but not broadband. Telewest apparently 'don't do my side of the street'!!
Pistol Pete 05-09-2003, 20:38 Cheers for all the replies. I think i'll borrow a box from a friend and see how many channels I can get before buying.
Cheers,
Pete
Sorry I don't know anything about freeview, as I have only got steam television.

Have you ever owned a slot television Halevan? Do they still exist?
Greybeard 08-11-2003, 20:28 Anyone getting good Freeview TV reception in Sheffield ?
Looks like ITV isn't available from the Crosspool transmitter !
another Freeview thread here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?threadid=2631&highlight=Freeview)
We get excellent reception on Freeview in Crookes nr the Ball. No extra aerial just an inside one that sits on the telly, But the transmitter is less than a mile away so i suppose it should be good.
Did you get one to try yet?
chalicefc3 09-11-2003, 18:01 i live at the top of the hill in S11 - you'd have thought that the reception i get is magical. i had a standard portable loop aerial and could pick up 1,2,3,4 perfectly and 5 almost perfectly. I am in direct line of crosspool transmitter with no obstructions.
However, when you take on board F2V service, you have to appreciate that the older aerial cabling is not effective in receiving the more modern digital data - so you get a lot of freeze blocking on your screen. Long run: I called out aerial guy, who installed a C5 aerial which WILL pick up F2V without a problem for nearly all of Sheffield. Basically - rule is that you can only get effective viewing through a normal aerial if you receive perfect Channel 5 reception!!
Greybeard 09-11-2003, 20:03 Well I can see the Crosspool transmitter (with binoculars) from the bedroom window...it's about three miles away I suppose. Current aerial is pointing at Emley Moor - but we have trees in the way which can cause interference.
Would be nice to find an installer who did a "no reception-no fee" service.

Too right. I think a "no reception, no fee" service should be as standard. How can they sell something on the understanding that it "might work", and if it doesn't, not give you a refund. Ridiculous.
Hi
I'll be moving to Lodge Moor area after christmas and was wondering if anyone up there has freeview and if so, what's the reception like. Looked on the freeview website and it suggests that you may need a new/different aerial. Is this the case ?
Also....
The BT website suggests that broadband "should" be available but there are long cable lengths to the exchange. Anyone using it ?
Thanks
Col
I am in Crookes and have no prob with Freeview. Reception is good but channels are crap.
Broadband also works here. Take a look at 'PlusNet' who are a provider based in Sheffield. Maybe a better and cheaper alternative to likes of BT.
I have just got a Freeview digi box in Wincobank area and the reception is fantastic - better picture than before shame more channels are available
royjames 12-12-2003, 14:20 I live at parson cross and all my freeview channels are green,it really is hitand miss.
Actually thinking about it, my parents bought a freeview box and my mum was not impressed and they took it back and got their money back, this was a couple of months ago though, and in Grimsby.
Mind you i wouldn't argue with my mother.
Tony Ruscoe 29-12-2003, 12:29 I'm in S10 and just got a Freeview box for Christmas. On tuning it in, it seems I'm missing some channels. Does this mean that my aerial is good enough to receive digital, but just pointing in the wrong direction???
According to this (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/terrestrial/mux/) on DigitalSpy and this (http://www.dtg.org.uk/retailer/dtt_channels.htm) on The Digital Television Group's website, I'm getting Multiplex 1 (no problem) & C (quite poorly).
Has anyone had any experience in having to upgrade their aerial? We're only renting at the moment, so don't want to have to shell out for a new external aerial that we can't take with us - so were considering an indoor aerial. Has anyone else (apart from fuzzy purple) had any experience using an indoor aerial to get Freeview?
Has anyone got any useful information / links for me to read more about it? (And don't just say www.freeview.co.uk or "try Google" lol...)

I'm missing a couple of channels too, although I get most, but then I am on top of the hill in near line of site of the Crosspool transmitter. The fact that the aerial is flapping about in the wind doesn't help, but also I guess the aerial may not be able to receive the frequency that some of the muxes are on. I'm going to upgrade my aerial soon, so I'll ask about indoor aerials if I remember.
garrence 01-01-2004, 16:49 We just got a freeview box (xmas present) in our house on Cowlishaw Road S11 and get a perfect reception from the crosspool transmitter using a standard Wickes loft arial (inside the loft) with no signal booster.

I hadn't considered a loft aerial, that's a good idea. I've just bought one from here (https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Aerials_Index/Aerials_Loft/index.html) so that will hopefully sort my problems out.
I don't know if the coverage has got any better or worse in the meantime, but back in the days of On digital / ITV digital I managed to get all channels using a Wickes loft ariel from Club Garden Road (Sharrow), Commonside, Filey Street (Broomhall) and Mona Road (off Springvale road).
Interestingly, I could never pick up anything using the pre-installed roof ariel at any of these addresses - The quality of the ariel and cabling seems really important. A big, quality replacement ariel in the loft was always able to recieve the digital signal - even from places where it's supposedly dodgy.
This is weird, my box downloaded a software upgrade yesterday, and now I can get the BBC3 and BBC4, so it was probably a problem with the box rather than the reception.
Tony Ruscoe 13-01-2004, 13:00 Update:
I got myself one of these (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008RT8J) indoor aerials. This seems to pick up almost all of the free to view digital channels. Sometimes the reception could be a little better, but moving the aerial a little seems to sort that out most of the time. (It seems to work best with the amplifier turned down.)
SpaceCadet 24-01-2004, 17:28 If its not too late...I live in S10, Collegiate Cres - got a Sony one two weeks ago. Picture fantastic, apart from when the weather is cr@p; some cool channels, and the music ones sound great through my 5.1 amp....neighbours don't agree tho'!!
pete10uk 24-01-2004, 17:51 The transmiter in crosspool only transmits the signal ofer sheffield.
I live fulwood and can see the transmiter from my roof but cant get freeview. The only option I had was to get my signal from emely moor. I think from where you are you would get perfect reception.
billycotton 17-02-2004, 19:35 I live in sheffield 3 and I can pick up the channels but the colour is not right.
The only place I know that get's a perfect picture is arbourthorne.
scatterheart 17-02-2004, 20:21 I'm in S3 too and was thinking of getting it, but when I went on the freeview website and typed in the postcode it said most houses in this area would need to get a new aerial. We rent so that's not a possibility.
Where abouts in S3 are you billycotton?
billycotton 17-02-2004, 20:47 hi sarah i'm at the top of west street near the university, like I said you will get a good picture but the colour is slightly off but it's still worth it.
scatterheart 17-02-2004, 20:48 Hi, I'm at Bramwell Court, just behind the blue flats, so maybe it would be ok here too.
Wish you could test it before buying
billycotton 17-02-2004, 20:53 Yes it's a shame you can't have a test first but I only paid £60 for my box so it ain't too bad, you will get a very good picture and after all it's worth it just to get sky news.
Hi
Yesterday I borrowed a freeview box off a friend to test reception before I go out and buy. I'm pleased to say that reception is excellent in my area (S10 - just off Redmires Rd). In fact, it's better than analogue. One of the reasons I want it is because Channel 4 is grainy and Channel 5 is quite bad from the analogue signal.
Hope this helps someone.
