View Full Version : Radioheads new record 'in rainbows' How much will you pay?
miniminch 02-10-2007, 17:02 Radioheads new record 'in rainbows' is out on download on 10th oct from http://www.inrainbows.com/Store/Quickindex2.html the wonderful thing is ; you decide what you want to pay!!! A stroke of genius? I hope the music is as good as KIDA which is one hell of a record.
How much will you pay??
I've been looking forward to this for ages, not sure how much I'll pay for it. Maybe a couple of quid?
Me and my housemates were discussing this the other day and he suggested that this could be some kind of a social experiment by Radiohead!
Interesting theory!
JFKvsNixon 02-10-2007, 18:55 I need my money more than they do, so I cannot imagine paying much for it. The £40 box set does sound tempting though.
NEKRO138 04-10-2007, 08:28 I'm very tempted by the box. I already have a few rare Radiohead pieces. I've got the Drill EP on cd. I've seen them go for around the £200 mark. Don't really want to sell it though.
BasilRathbon 04-10-2007, 08:59 Do you think if enough of us offer to pay them to stop making tedious pretentious records they might split up?

Everyone's got their price!
I agree that some of their output is pretentious and tedious, but some of it is very good. Having said that, I have no problem with people making self indulgent music. If that's their hobby, fine.
The problem is that I'll need to work out which phase they're in before I'll know what I'm prepared to pay for it!
As my sister said, with Thom Yorke's solo album it had gone round in the CD player 3 times before they realised that it was repeating itself! If that's from a die hard Radiohead fan (she's been to see them live all over the place and my niece would only sleep to OK Computer when she was newborn because that's what mummy listened to in the car) then I know that it's not an album that I want to own.

I think all of the new tracks have been performed live and are on youtube.
Check em out, they sound pretty good!
muddycoffee 04-10-2007, 11:17 They will have to pay me £25 an hour to listen to that.
After the bends I never heard anything from them that didn't bore me to tears.
nic_scarlet 04-10-2007, 11:33 Nobody's heard it yet - It might be rubbish!
Thus, I paid £0.00
dont you have to pay a minimum of 45p?
Fantomas 04-10-2007, 11:42 Nobody's heard it yet - It might be rubbish!

So if it comes out and it's brilliant you're going to pay more?
Don't people pay for CDs all the time without knowing whether they're good or not?
For the record, I've preordered it for a fiver. I think that's a reasonable price to pay when most of the money is going direct to the artist rather than being creamed off by a record company.
Alastair 04-10-2007, 11:46 The minimum price is 45p to download. Since Radiohead no longer have a record company does anyone know if the 45p they make per download is more than the royalties they would have received for sales if they had still be signed up?
I get the impression this might be a smart business move on Radioheads part whilst appearing to be non-capitalist.

Radiohead new album: music industry react to unique release
Experts predict 'In Rainbows' will 'change how people think about music'
01.Oct.07 12:09pm
Music industry experts are saying the unique way Radiohead's new album 'In Rainbows' is being released will revolutionise the way people think about music.
The band have not set a price for the download version of the album, leaving the "price" field blank, to let customers decided how much to pay for it.
Adam Benzine of music industry bible 'Music Week' said it will really shake things up in terms of album pricing.
"Radiohead have really put the cat amongst the pigeons with this one," he told NME.COM. "The album will revolutionise the way people think about music. It had already forced people to question how much music is actually worth. I saw a posting on a forum with a fan saying he would pay £2.50 for it!
"Radiohead have always been about asking questions of their audience. When they did their 'tent tour', they wanted to do a tour without any branding."
Benzine added that it will have a lasting impact on the future of the music industry.
"The timing of this comes when The Charlatans are giving their album away as a free download, Prince is giving a DVD away as a covermount free with 'The Observer' and Travis gave away a veritable Best Of free with the 'Mail On Sunday'," he explained. "This move continues the changing musical landscape for established artists."

from MUSICNEWS.com
The Charlatans have signed an x-clusive deal with Xfm to give away their latest album at http://www.xfm.co.uk where it will be available as a free download - starting with their first single 'You Cross My Path’ on Monday 22nd October. The album which is currently having the final touches put in place will be available in its entirety as a download early in 2008.
The first radio play of the new single and exclusive interviews with the band and management can be heard on Xfm’s Music:Response shows shortly after 8pm on Thursday 4th October.
The Charlatans and Xfm first started discussing the idea a couple of months ago and were really excited by the prospect of creating an industry first. The band had found themselves in the unique situation of being out of contract with a record label, owning their own recording studio and having the backing of Alan McGee of Alan McGee Management. Everyone thought that it would be a great way of getting their new material out to their fans. With live music currently booming they are confident that they are still onto a winner and this was backed up when the band, who have just returned from Los Angeles, announced their first tour dates in London, Glasgow and Manchester all of which sold out immediately.
I paid 3 quid for it. There was a 45p debit charge though. Can't wait to listen to it!
They will have to pay me £25 an hour to listen to that.
After the bends I never heard anything from them that didn't bore me to tears.
You have to give the post Bends albums a few listens before they 'click' but when they do...
There is no getting away from the fact that there is some wibbly rubbish on the post OK Computer stuff, but then there is also stuff that sucks all the air from the room and leaves me gagging in its beauty.
Back OT, how much will I pay? £10 seems a fair price. If I really like it I might give them another £10.
Haven't got my email reply that gives me a link to the download site.
Thanks Radiohead
Fantomas 10-10-2007, 10:29 My link came through at 6.30 this morning. Have you checked that your spam filter hasn't had away with it?
Listening to the album now - early days but I think it's very good indeed, possibly the best since OK Computer and certainly a lot less like hard work than their most recent ones.
nic_scarlet 10-10-2007, 11:53 So if it comes out and it's brilliant you're going to pay more?
Just listened to it. I paid the right price. I found it very dull and samey.
I bought all their albums proper up to Hail to the Thief (except PH) but I won't be buying this one.
johnbradley 10-10-2007, 12:10 I quite like a couple of Radiohead tunes...thing is, the bloke just needs to cheer up a bit. My auntie has a dodgy eye and she's quite chipper.
PuressenceUK 10-10-2007, 12:30 You don't have to pay a 45p admin charge - I've just downloaded it for free...........and it's rubbish. They will never do anything as good as OK Computer, which I would gladly have paid £20 for.
nic_scarlet 10-10-2007, 12:40 I liked all their albums since OK Computer, to varying degrees, at least they tried to do something "different". This is just Radiohead playing it safe
Dance Nation 10-10-2007, 12:54 Their stuff is just too 'miserable' and depressing for me:sad:. I would pay nothing to have my day brought down by yet another Radiohead 'song'.:gag:

Just checked my spam filter, and it is indeed there :P
Listening to it now.....here we go :D
EdnaKrabappe 10-10-2007, 19:30 Heard some on Stuart Maconie, it sounded good. Now I want it but moral quandry time. Don't want to pay nothing but i'm skint until next week - so do i wait and then pay £4.99 (which is what i think all albums should cost) or do i just get it now for free?

Get it now fro free then buy another download for 4.99 next week. If this were a regular release they would not be getting more than a quid for each copy anyway – so you’ll be paying them 5 times what they usually get anyway.
I paid £5 for mine, partly because I think that's a fair price to pay for a CD by a decent artist and partly because I'd like to see more of this kind of distribution in the future.
I wonder how much they'll actually make off it though, while it may be true that a band wouldn't see much of the price of a CD they wouldn't have to pay their own production and distribution costs either.
Now, time for some quality moping.

Apparently....they are going to sign with a label early next year to get the CD in stores. This download and the disc box is all being done via the web and mail. So there overhead at this point is fairly small, it'll be interesting to see how it pans out.
alternageek 10-10-2007, 21:27 i cant connect to their site :(
Listened to the album about five times now.
It's a very good album! It's certainly not their best work but still very good! It seems to grow on me after every listen.
One thing that I like about it is that it sounds better as an overall album, rather than picking out favourite tracks.
So far....8/10.
Until it's possible to pay for downloaded albums in a lossless format, i'll continue to download stuff for nowt. Why should anyone pay full price for mp3? It would be like charging someone full price for a cassette with the vinyl album taped on it. Rant over.....
As for Radiohead...say what you like about them, but how many bands are there today where you think: 'I wonder what their new albums gonna sound like?' The only artist i can think of is Bowie.
We all know what the new album by Coldplay/Oasis/ Arctic Monkeys (already!)/Paul Weller/Beautiful South/U2 is gonna sound like before we've even heard it....
alternageek 14-10-2007, 09:36 at the moment its only available in 160kbps mp3 format. thats how the band distributed it. i believe it was posted at a low bitrate to keep it off the torrent sites who demand that files be at least 192 or higher.
i finally managed to connect and paid £2 with the credit card charge. i mainly did this because it didnt come with artwork AND it was in a low bitrate. i would have paid more if it was VBR and had the cover art with it.
Agent Gypo 14-10-2007, 10:26 My housemate downloaded it for the princely sum of £0.00. I will probably do the same.
While I admire Radiohead for trying to incorporate something different with their sound, I don't think they've made a consistently good album since OK Computer. Even Kid A, which has some brilliant moments, is quite patchy.
That said, they're infinitely better than absolutely anything I've heard in the UK charts in years. OK Computer set such a high standard that I don't think they are ever likely to reach again, and my hat goes off to them for not trying to duplicate it.

Well said, although I do disagree slightly on the album point.
But that's just because I love Radiohead :D
Just downloaded for nowt - will listen to it in a few mins while I cook dinner - will buy it when it comes out next year if I like it - although haven't been impressed with anything they've done since "OK Computer"
I've just paid £2 for it and only on track 3 but I like it already.
I think £2 is the right price for me for an album - I'm pretty sure that my total music purchased would go up quite a lot if all albums were that price.
Little bit disapointed that the format is 160kbps joint stereo - why not flac offered as well? why no cover art?
Main thing is that for the first time in ages I took a chance and bought an album before I knew I'd like it. I just can't afford to make mistakes at £14.99 a go.
I've not bought it yet, but have listened to one track - 'House of cards' and think it's brilliant. Mesmerising.

Hell yeah, that's a great song.
I think 'Reckoner' is the best track though.
sallonoroff 22-10-2007, 14:21 I'm not a big enough fan to warrant splashing £40 on that box-set... If they'd just released it on CD, i'd 've gladly paid a tenner for it though. As it stands, i'll probably download it for a couple of quid.
BTW, anyone know if it's DRM'd?
