sTaGeWaLkEr 02-10-2007, 08:18 Ask him to break down the materials cost a bit more - then you can assess whether the labour part is acceptable or not.
Edit: Hang on. I've just read this again. Maybe I haven't properly woken up yet, but if the total for labour and materials is 'x' then why is he charging 'y'? What is the difference between 'x' and 'y'?
Almost half a grand for a door? Is it made of diamond?

the door slides back (he hasn't done the work yet this is a quote)
cgksheff 02-10-2007, 08:44 As we have no idea how much work he had to do, it is impossible to make a realistic comment.

the difference is £386 - but he is ha ving to plaster round where the old bath was taken out, then covering that part with 'marble' walling

Just what I was thinking CG.
Impossible to comment unless we know what exactly he is doing and what state the room is in now.
Deepak_S7 02-10-2007, 17:35 Difficult to comment
but
Assume materials are for plaster and stuff
Cost minimal, say 100 pounds to be safe
Labour thus 1600 pounds
200 a day gives a builder an income of 52K a year which seems good :)
So Id expect the job to take one man 8 days or a builder and his lad 5-6
How many days have you been quoted?
Deepak
cressida 02-10-2007, 17:36 he has to install a shower unit, fit a new loo next to it, remove old loo, plaster where the old bat,h was and adhere 'marble walling' onto the plaster, remove old wash basin and put a new one there, the new loo may need new pipes as it will be in the left over space that the bath took, fixing a new mirror over the basin which is going where the old loo was
Deepak_S7 02-10-2007, 17:50 how long did they say the job would take?
cressida 02-10-2007, 18:14 how long did they say the job would take?
I shall have phone him tomorrow for that, possibly four days
pinklady 02-10-2007, 18:18 get a few quotes (preferably from workmen that have been recommended) ... beware of ones that are too law but it'll give you an idea of how much it should be
Deepak_S7 02-10-2007, 18:29 £1600 for 4 days work?
thats 104,000 pounds salary a year
Generous
:)
Plain Talker 02-10-2007, 22:51 It cost about 3 1/2 grand in total for a weeks work ripping my old bathroom suite, flooring and tiles out, reflooring, installing a level access shower, and shower rails and handrails and a new sink and loo, that included labour, Tiles, tiling work, electrics, floorcovering, plumbing, making good (eg boxing in the pipes that needed boxing in) painting, and patching.
this was almost exactly a year ago.
the contractor made a fantastic job of it, I  my new bathroom.

thanks PT perhaps that's nearer the mark, new pipes and all the plumbing takes a lot of labour

remember the old tin bath in front of the fire , outside toilet and pot sink , by gum lass weve got it rough now havent we ? on a more serious note see what you can get the materials for yourself and ask for a labour only quote off at least three tradesmen.
