As I'm in the process of getting accomodation there (just off the a621) Seems an alright area....quiet enough. So i thought I'd come on and see if anyone could give me some inside info on the place...good pubs, supermarkets, best chipper, video shop etc. And would you say its within a drunken walk of the city centre...?

Carter Knowle is fairly quiet, at least it is where I live.
Pubs are very few. On Abbeydale Road, there's the Millhouses, which used to be a bit run-down but is currently being refurbished. Work could even be complete.
Further towards town is the Broadfield which has traditionally been a student pub. It even used to stage live music.
Over in Nether Edge (10 mins walk) there's the Byron (decent if dullish) and the one just around the corner from there, the Brincliffe, which I have always found to be a bit townee-ish (sorry).
Up Carter Knowle Road is the Cherry Tree, which has a big circular area and has an estate feel to it.
If you are prepared to walk for 20/25 mins, you can feast on all the delights that Ecclesall Road/Hunters Bar has to offer. That's not too long is it? Just one episode of EastEnders.
Supermarkets are aplenty. Big Sainbury's (Archer Rd) and Tescos(Abbeyday Road, with 24-hr garage).
There's an Oddbins on Abbeydale Road but the best Offie is the award-winning Small Beer on Archer Road which has real ale on tap (take your own container or buy one there) and an excellent selection of bottled beer. The guy who runs it is a Sheff U fan and a nice guy.
There are plenty of chip shops/fast food outlets. The Chinese we use is the Hing Lung and the Indian the totally excellent New India Garden at Woodseats.
Is Carter Knowle near enough the city centre close enough for a drunken stagger? Just depends on how far you can stagger when drunk!

I lived on Carterknowle road for a great many years and still live in the general area. The above post has answered most of your queries so I haven't much too add. Certainly the best pub in my estimation is the Broadfield, the lounge is nice and it isn't full of students but has a good age range. Various pizza places will deliver or the nearest one to walk to is 100 yards from the bottom of Carterknowle and the chip shop the Lakes? next to the pizza place is okay. Halfway up Ck is a locals shop that sels all the basics and more besides if you haven't got the energy to get to the big 24 hour Tesco's ten minutes or less along Abbeydale road. Buses going up Ck go down into the city and there are plenty of other buses running along Abbeydale road.
The walk into town to the bottom of the Moor would take you about half an hour so a drunken stagger home would take maybe an hour but if it's cold you'll do it in less. If you need more detailed info just ask
Cheers guys, exactly the kind of stuff I wanted.
One extra thing that you might take into consideration - speed bumps. It's filled with speed bumps so unless you have a 4x4, be ready to shell out for suspension repairs every so often.
